Wed Dec 05, 2012 10:06 am

Reuters reports that CZ has agreed to buy 10 A330-300 from Airbus.

Someone mentioned in another thread yesterday that John Leahy was on his way to China. Apparently he was on a mission!

Busy times for the 333.We have just heared of a further improvement in terms of fuel /range.This itself comes on top of Airbus' announcement that they are looking ar potentially putting 320 style sharklets onto the wing tips.(plus 4% sfc?)

In a seperate thread it is being debated how long it will be before the -10 will take over this marketplace (a decade?). But then..

A third thread starts suggesting that the -10 is not going to be aimed at this sector at all! But a major re engineering exercise. With additional undercarriage and strengthening and thus fuel, targeting directly the 359 (777-200er) market. (Unless they are considering 2 versions one a simple stretch and one with the major changes?)

Either way none of this is happening any time soon. So I guess we will see more of these types of order in the future as the 333 has this market segment to itself right now .

According to this FlightGlobal article:

http://www.flightglobal.com/news/art...as-emissions-dispute-eases-379793/

"[Airbus] said that Chinese deals for A330s and A380s were being affected by the European position."

Does this mean we can expect a follow on order for more A380s in the near future? 5 aircraft is quite a small subfleet and the growth in China can surely handle it. This has probably been discussed before, but just thought I'd mention it, now its looking more likely.

Any other Chinese carriers likely candidates for the A380?

I would of thought that CZ is most likely to top-up as, as you say, 5 is a small sub-fleet. With lots of carriers in SE Asia now operating the A380 I suspect that all of the big Chinese carriers will be placing orders over the coming years.

There was talk of "at least 30 orders for the A330" beign stalled by this row so there could be another 20 orders coming soon for the A330 as well.

Would be even better for the continuing success story the A330 has become.

China had threatened to cancel the Hong Kong Airlines A380 order over ETS, so I assume that threat is now mooted.

Though HX can't take delivery anyway until the Hong Kong Civil Aviation Dept. loosens up their current restrictions on HX's Operating Certificate.

They are continuing to take delivery from Airbus by transferring the existing 738 to HU (or HU's subsidiaries
FYR, HU is HX's parent company

HU HX has no need for the A380. HX should stay an all 320/330 operator.

And how can you be so certain? I would be interested to see what/if any insider analysis you have to back this up.

I think HX want to become a viable competitor to CX and one way of doing this is operating an aircraft that everyone is talking about... No other aircraft has the same buzz at the moment.

Also, China/HKG is a huge market with a lot of prospects for high-capacity routes.
Next Flights: LHR-OSL (738), OSL-CPH (320), CPH-LHR (321), LHR-HEL (359), HEL-LHR (359)

I am a happy frequent flyer with Hainan group, an excellent bunch of Chinese carriers.

HX has precious little feed from HKG and no alliance feed either. This and a seriously top notch competitor with Jet Star arriving shortly results in market fragmentation. The airline has also announced a return to focus on Intra Asian routes - perfect for an A320/330 fleet.

China Long Haul will be a huge market, but how many of the new routes are anywhere near profitable?

Very. (Especially after Turkish recently returned to GE for their latest order.) I get the impression that there is less and less need or inclination to stay with a single manufacturer.

Re-sale value must go with RR on the 330? TK was a shocker, but they may have got a deal with the 777 order?

Doesn't get more inside than the chairman of the group.

IMHO HU/HX over-committed itself with the A380 order/747-8i MOU. It needs to learn how to walk first before it runs.

CX is so entrenched in HK it is VERY difficult to compete with them. For many HK resident CX is their default option for travel. It will take more than just a few A380s.

China is a huge market but I am now pessimistic over the prospect of A380s in China. I have always said we will not see dedicated A380 fleet running intra-China services. CZ's various intra-China A380 services were losing them a lot of money even though the LF was good. The CAN-LAX service was reportedly doing well but I think it will be a long while before CZ think about a top up. CA has 748i, 77W and A350 on order, MU has a MOU/LOI for 20 77Ws. I think we are not going to see another A380 order from Mainland China for the foreseeable future.

I don't see why they wouldn't stick with Rolls-Royce. All of their A333 fleet are equipped with Rolls-Royce engines, as are 6 of their A332s.
