New Airline/Routes From Newquay Cornwall Airport

Wed Dec 05, 2012 10:01 pm

Hi!

This is my first post on here so please don't be too harsh with me

I saw a post on Facebook today by Newquay Cornwall airport that they are planning to announce tomorrow a new airline and new routes from the airport for summer 2013! I was just wondering if anyone had heard anything about this or if anyone had any ideas about which airline might be coming to NQY?

Was just confirmed on BBC Spotlight that tomorrow, Easyjet are to announce two new domestic routes into NQY for next summer, both of which will operate three times a week. One will be in the North West, the other in the South East.

Personally, I think they will be LPL and SEN.

I was hoping it would be Easyjet, i just thought that NQY's development fee might put off some of the LCC's. Ryanair blamed the fee when they pulled out a couple years ago...

Wow, great news for NQY. As much as I love Flybe, I hope EZY start a LGW-NQY flight sometime in the future.

Haha don't be silly, BA are going to base a couple 747's there instead!

Being serious though maybe someone like TOM could actually go there with a 737, they fly from places such as Bouremouth so who knows... Im sure it would please the people of Cornwall to have a local airport which you can go on holiday from without treking miles to Bristol, or even Gatwick.

I have often thought TOM should try some routes from NQY. Some routes to Spain, Tunisia, Turkey etc could work well. I usually end up flying from LGW, after you pay fuel and airport parking at Exeter/Bristol etc, it works out same to fly NQY to LGW and then fly out from LGW.

Hmm, any guesses why SEN instead of STN or LTN?

Maybe they wanted to get some more routes for SEN, soon as it is a new base for EZY. Plus I suppose it gives people in Essex more of a chance to go to a more local airport than just STN.

You may be surprised to learn that KLM operated B747-200B charter flights in the 1980's routing AMS-NQY-JFK on behalf of CUNARD.

So perhaps not so far fetched!!

Just for interest, the year with the great number of seats on offer between NQY and LON was 2008 with 191,169 one-way seats. This was when FR, BA, and WOW all served LON airports, with the 104,328 with FR to STN, 54,353 with WOW to LGW, and 32,488 with BA to LGW. Source: OAG.

Wow really, I didn't think the runway was long enough! When I was at NQY in October the Flybe Dash-8 looked big there, I couldn't ever imagine anything as big as a 747 there.

Now we just have to wait for Flybe to order some A380's...

Newquay has got a fairly substantial runway, it's just all the other infrastructure thats a bit on the small side. Concord visited sometime in the early 2000's (I think) so it cant be that small

Interesting to see them go with SEN and not LGW in the end - FlyBe have gotten off lightly there, a single daily LGW-NQY was apparently initially planned. A LPL or MAN service was inevitable, WW's issue from MAN was never the loads, just their inability to make any money from it.

BOU has a significantly larger and wealthier catchment area than NQY and a much higher propensity to fly. Tourism is such a big part of the Cornish economy that it distorts the traditional summer travel season for residents. Monarch did try a small operation from NQY and bailed at a convenient opportunity before any flights took place, whilst Ryanair also gave up after two seasons.

They have a 2,750m runway. It's one reason why the airport is so unprofitable, they barely need 2,000m but the surplus length racks up extra running costs.
