HK Airlines To Swap A380's For Smaller A/c's?

Thu Dec 06, 2012 6:39 am

According to Bloomberg, Hong Kong Airlines is seeking A380 order swap for smaller aircrafts (A330's?) as they scrapped their long haul international expansion plan

Quote:
Hong Kong Airlines, holder of the biggest backlog of Airbus SAS A380 orders in Asia, is seeking to swap some planes for smaller models because of a new focus on short-haul routes.

The carrier is discussing changing at least some of its 10 on-order A380s for A330s, and delaying deliveries, President Yang Jianhong said by phone yesterday, without giving a timeframe for when talks may be concluded. Airbus doesn’t comment on negotiations with customers, said spokesman Sean Lee.

Very smart move. No need for them to get A380s and in exchange they can get 4 A320s/A321s for 1 A380. If they really want long haul aspirations, they should approach Etihad and have themselves fly HKG-AUH daily with an A332 with EY feeding the flight with connecting pax from GCC/Europe and Africa.

Apart from that, it should indeed just stick to the A320 family and concentrate on consolidating its regional presence.

Is it surprising that the a380 isn't that popular in Hong Kong? I was definitely expecting an order from CX...

Why would EY want to facilitate such an expansion by HK Airlines?

I don't think it is a matter of A380 not popular in Hong Kong. It just so happens that the dominant international airline in Hong Kong favours a frequency approach and is still yet to make up its mind with regards to VLAs. The A380 order by HX was often viewed as a way to procure aircrafts while circumventing regulatory authority in China for the mothership HU, and as such as not much to do with Hong Kong per se. This order, together with the rumoured but never officially confirmed MOU for 15 747-8i, was always on shakey ground and the restriction slapped onto HX by HK authority merely precipitated the rethink.
If CX does decide to buy A380s I think you will find it very popular.

I wonder how long it will for CX to make a decision on the VLA now that the A380s are on some intra-Asian routes (AFAIK SQ, KE and TG use the A380 at least one daily). Moreover, isn't LHR one of BA's initial A380 routes?
