Most Airlines Have RPM Traffic Gains In Nov Except

Fri Dec 07, 2012 6:36 pm

As the November traffic numbers roll in it is surprising to see some nice gains---US Air, Alaska, JetBlue, Hawaiian, Delta, Spirit all are up and the list goes on and on---even in Europe we see gains. This RPM growth in light of Hurricane Sandy is quite remarkable and bodes well for December. But one airline is still going the other way----SWA reported a decrease of 1.5% in their RPM's---now combined with AirTran. I keep hearing about this so called grand plan of SWA but month after month they continue to lag while other carriers are growing at their expense. It used to be the other way around and is tough for this 40-year customer to see his favorite airline languishing while other carriers are growing. I know all about revenues not being as important as profits but the other carriers are growing and are also increasing profits.......I simply do not see what SWA's plan is today or tomorrow unless they are purposely shrinking AirTran.

I was also struck by WN's 1.5% decline in RPM in November, on top (or on the bottom )of a 2.4% decline in October. Are 717's already being pulled off line for the modifications before WN delivers them to Delta? Although load factor in November dropped by a couple points. Perhaps the higher and higher fuel prices are affecting the discreottionary travel budgets of many of WN's traditional customers or perhaps some of these customers have moved over to the Spirits and Allegiants of the world?

The first 717 destined for Delta is not planned to go into mods until March 2013 for a September 2013 delivery to Delta. I am not sure when it will leave the FL/WN fleet.

Yep, WN is preparing to file for bankruptcy. I heard they're going to forgo Ch. 11 and go straight to Ch. 7 and liquidate.

Seriously, winding down one network is going to have this effect.
