When DL Sends A Plane To The Desert?

Not all airlines do it, but I thought DL was one of those carriers that immediately removed titles

But, I saw a recent pic in a mag of an L-1011 that did not have titles removed,. You can see it here vs the norm

I don't know about the L1011s but 173 is not set for retirement just yet so it won't have it's titles removed.
What gets measured gets done.

Yes, there is storage and there is retirement. If the type is active in the fleet, mothballing it in the desert is different than retirement.

A lot of the VCV planes are only in storage. They are still on the Ops Spec and will come back into service. During a slow period we might park some for a while to right size the operation. Which gets parked varies. Some are coming up on HMV and the work is being put off a few months. Others are parked to save cycles on newer planes while flying the doors off another that will soon be cycled out and retired.

Last time I made it out to MHV it did seem that is was rather sporadic. There were plenty of aircraft likely not to return to service that still had full titles, including some Delta L-1011's.

I noticed in the middle set of photos of the L-1011's the vertical stabs we painted out in a very particular and identical way (in three of the four photos). Is that for ease of identification or maybe just a personal style of the person with the paint brush? Does Delta (and other carriers) dictate to the crews at MVH exactly how they want the livery painted over? Would love to hear how that whole process works.

When I flew on a L1011 I told everyone it was a DC10..shame on me! I was just a kid back then.

In many cases the airplane is leased and when it's returned to the leasing company the titles are removed.

Well, of course. I was just pointing out to the OP that 173 was in storage so it won't have its titles removed.

When there's no demand for the aircraft or the parts, it may be cheaper to leave them parked than pay to have them scrapped.

I noticed that on the 767-332ER parked VCV has a scab patch on the left upper fuselage about eight windows aft of the over wing escape exit. Why would Delta put a scab patch or external doubler there? A flush patch would be much better looking and aerodynamically. It creates drag and increases fuel use.

It's a SATCOM antenna. Most repair doublers are scab type though. The internals are a lot more involved. Usually only see them in the nose area due to RVSM requirements.

Im glad they are not scrapped (I don't like seeing any plane getting scrapped), but I just always wondered why they are still around so long after they got retired. You have alot newer planes which get scrapped straight away now these days, so I just wondered how such older planes were still sitting in the desert. As said even though there is no demand for the L1011's, I would love to see Delta make a couple of them into musuem aircraft!

They are no longer owned by Delta. Wells Fargo Bank owns a few......
This plane is built to withstand anything... except a bad pilot.
