A bit of a shot in the dark, but possibly one of United's special Christmas flights for kids?

Since SFO is a maintenance base for UA, my guess it that they're post-maintenance check flights.

Yeah the special flights are just high speed taxis... this is certainly attributable to the latter.

Believe this is testing of newly installed WiFi. Of course I can't confirm that, but WiFi has been added to several A319s at SFO and a test hop is usually done before release.

Flyer Talk thread says that A319 N802UA had WiFi operational today on his flight. Rumor was that the WiFi was awaiting some type of government approval. If approved, several A319s should have WiFi turned on - right now the Amenities portion of N802UA does not show WiFi under inflight entertainment.

747-400 N104UA was rumored to have WiFi installation at SFO, but probably not turned on - would have to be international WiFi.

Unless something's changed (or they do things differently at different airports), there have been pictures posted in the past of these flights, including shots taken of the kids looking out the windows at San Francisco...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that at least some of the specials this year were scheduled to be actual flights. Last year they sent up an aircraft out of SFO and flew around for about an hour.

I found this by the SF Examiner from last year

The annual Fantasy flight took place on Sunday, December 2, 2012. The B747-400 departed gate 82 and was airborne for an hour and returned to gate 86 with a water cannon salute from the airport and greeted by employees as they deplaned at the North Pole. It's amazing what UAL did for these kids. I believe the flight was file as UAL1716.

It was a Maintenance test flight. We do about 2-3 per week.

While some of the kids' dream flights to the North Pole never actually leave the ground....quite a few of them actually do. The trips out of BDL actually circle a few times then land back at the airport...parking at a gate decorated as the "North Pole".

"International WiFi"? I thought the 747s were being fitted with WiFi to connect with an onboard server, not to connect externally with the internet.
