I Wish VX Would Come To Houston (IAH/HOU)

Tue Dec 11, 2012 1:29 pm

I know tha VX has made it clear that they are going to focus on their current routes, and develop their current cities, to become more established, but it would be incredible to see them at Houstons IAH or HOU!

I wish airlines could collectively cover their WACC and achieve a decent ROE. Well, we can dream...

I love VX at DFW. It allows me to fly AA to LAX and SFO at a cheaper price

Yes, that would be nice wouldn't it? I bet after the frequency adjustments and EWR launch, VX might just try to take a stab at improving their bottom line.

Therein lies the problem: VX enters fortress markets with 3 or 4 flights vs 10-15 plus legacy. Legacy matches fare, has huge captive FF base and aforementioned frequencies = VX looses shorts, socks and tee shirt. Then NK comes in and sops up the super price sensative demographic. Wise man says: VX has great product with no place to fly,

According to those "in the know" on here, and elsewhere, DFW does quite well and is profitable for them. Point made, though. In the case of Houston, VX could replicate what they've done up in Dallas. People aren't exactly thrilled with UA these days, and VX would do well pillaging some of the regular west coast pax. Though, we'll see if they put their money where their mouth is when forced to give up MileagePlus miles.

Yes, it's all wonderful... as long as LA or SF is your destination. Hopefully you'll never need to get to, well, anywhere else!

Exactly....I understand that DFW has been a black spot in their sea of red and perhaps the same premium leakage that AA suffered in the DFW area may happen in IAH. The percentage is tricky and I'm sure involves mathematic statistic modeling that is way above my pay grade LOL. Lets say 3% of premium FF's are willing to walk away from their legacy and use VX. Is that 3% enough to cover the cost of opening a market and hopefully make a profit? I dunno.

I'd love to see competition....don't get me wrong. I just don't know if VX has the cash on hand to try any more science experiments. I feel for them for being the a nightmare catch 22...they are getting squeezed on most fronts with their current route structure but do not have the financial wherewithal to test new markets.

I think someone better tell David Cush, I think he thinks VX already serves Houston:

Cush said Virgin America’s arrival at other airports in Houston and Chicago has brought down ticket prices

Whoever wrote the article made a few mistakes and quoting Cush was probably one of them.

-Regarding service only to SFO/LAX, i couldve sworn VX offerred connections via one or both cities to PDX|SEA|LAS|SJD|PVR|SAN|PSP no?

I don't think Houston is perceived as "cool" enough by VX to warrant service. They seem to select their markets based on a bi-coastal model, with ORD and DFW being their only mid-continent cities.
That said, I do wonder if UA has been worried about future competition, as IAH-SFO fares were down to the $220r/t level from late September until the end of November. UA generally runs fares on that route at the $400 level.

That would be a nice line up at Terminal A at IAH. If Virgin America flew from IAH to one of United top ten busiest destination it will tick off United.
