Holiday Cargo Fun

Tue Dec 11, 2012 9:59 pm

I'm assuming there will still be some unique cargo flights happening this year as the major freight carriers start to send charter flights and bigger planes to lesser stations to help meet the ever-increasing holiday shipping demand.

Last year here in DSM, we saw 742s and DC-8s on multiple days during the last week before Christmas. Fingers crossed for the same experience in 2012, although I realize this sort of activity is becoming less and less necessary with every passing year.

BIL has two flights in the evenings instead of the normal one...a 757 and a 727.

FYI this month will be the last month the 727 comes to BIL as a scheduled flight. They will probably not be back next peak as the retirements are going into overdrive.

PHX is always fun during peak cargo season. Last year we had a National 747 come through. Yesterday I snapped a UPS MD11

DSM is getting UPS MD-11 and a DC-8 ,but not sure on the airline, maybe National Cargo. Kalitta is flying in a 727 on the 21st.

We've been getting a few 727s up here at GFK. We don't exactly get a large variety of transport aircraft up here so it's nice to see. I turned final last week and my CFI was like holy cow it's a 727! Though I have to admit, I love seeing the 757s up here.

No, National parked the 8's in May. Maybe ATI, they have a couple left but everyone has parked theirs this year.

I'm looking forward, as always, to flying Peak again this year. I always get excited when we start hearing our possible schedules, don't know what I get to do yet though, just know I'll be flying a lot next week!

Are you sure about that? They had one of their 70s on static display at Thunder Over Michigan in August. Their 60 was parked on their ramp. Where were their other DC-8s then?

Their website now only shows the 757 and 747, as does Airfleets.net:

Positive. Sadly they are done, all their pilots moved into the 747 fleet over the spring and summer. The -70 series is still on the West ramp with the engines covered and the white -63 was donated to the museum although it has been moved from the East ramp to the South ramp in recent months. National is sending 2 747's to peak, that should be it.

If there is an 8 on the schedule it is probably ATI and this will most likely be the last chance to see them flying. They only have a couple left.

Couple of years ago (ish) a warehouse in the UK holding umpteen thousand x-boxes (or PS3's, or some other console) burned to the ground a few weeks before x-mas. An An-124 was chartered, flown to China, and loose loaded with another umpteen thousand consoles and shipped off to EMA. Un-loading the kite took two days; that was "fun"!

Hopefully the Yankee Museum keeps that 63 and takes care of it unlike their DC-6 and Argosy, which are rumored to be getting scrapped as well as the B-52, which is also rumored to be taken back by the USAF museum for not being taken care of.

National had a couple other DC-8s, where are they?

921R went to the, ROW I think, about 3 or 4 years ago now, the other 70 series went out about a year or so ago after the last UPS Peak season.

I heard the same rumors about the B-52, a real shame, not sure if and when it will happen. As you know, Michigan isn't a great weather environment to store an aircraft outdoors. I hope they build a hangar soon, they can't continue operating like they are. The Zantop hangar has been condemned for a while now so no parking in there anymore. My buddy flies their B-17 and they are trying their best, it's just so expensive.

This Thursday morning FedEx will be flying an A310 from San Juan, PR to Manchester, New Hampshire. Flight 9743 is obviously a re-po flight, but interesting nonetheless.

MHT had been getting the MD-11 each Saturday for over a month prior to Thanksgiving, but none of that type since. It's MD-10s, A300s, and A310s for them.

December 18-21, FedEx will run an A310 50 miles from Boston to Manchester, operating as Flight 1473.

Also, Kallita had a 747-200 at Boston today. Some theorize that it was ferrying parts needed to 'un-strand' a crippled Alitalia A330 in Boston that has been stuck there for a few days...perhaps an engine.

I wish FDX would sub an MD-10 or -11 to GRR iso our usual A310 or A306 during the holiday rush....

ROC has been getting extra FX 727's and A300's . All coming in the dark,of course. FX300 (727!) came in from MEM yesterday (we normally do not have FX arrivals on Mondays). Departed for LCK,which is not normal. Friday we had an extra A300 in addition to our normal MD-10-10.The A300 departed for SYR. That seams to be all ,No Kalitta L1011 like years ago

ATI's DC-8-70 is filed PHL-DSM this morning - hasn't left yet though. But I remember last year it filed for a similiar time frame and left like an hour and a half late.

http://flightaware.com/live/flight/ATN2197

Saw a Kalitta 727 this morning as well. DSM is also seeing lots of owned UPS metal today - PHX, BFI, JFK are all sending planes here and don't typically do so. Someone else mentioned that DSM was going to get an MD-11 sometime this week ... any more info on that? Not happening today at least.

EWR is good for spotting Kalitta 747 classics. Most of those birds are all white - no cheatlines or company markings. However, these birds are on the opposite end of the airport from Terminal C. You need access (i.e., an airline ticket) to the gate areas and a good telephoto lens to catch the airplanes. I have had limited success with the monorail, because of the motion (and the necessity of hiding the camera before it reaches the next station).

PHL is one of UPS' regional hubs. While normal service has dwindled to only 15-25 flts a day, every Holiday season UPS seems to really ramp up operations.

In the same vein as RFD? I know it's a regional hub, but PHL seems to get considreably more lift around this time of year. Was just curious as to the reason PHL dominates non-SDF UPS hubs (in terms of big metal).

Here in Manchester, NH we've seen some interesting flights from UPS...but none of the flights to or from Ontario, California we'd get in past years. All MHT-SDF and MHT-PHL. Largely (but not exclusively), European freight goes via PHL while everything else goes to Louisville.

For their part, FedEx is doing what they always do this time of year: Flying Boston-Manchester (A310) and Boston-Portland, Maine (A300). The former goes on to Indianapolis; the latter goes back down to Newark.

Also, our flight 3719 (A300) that normally goes IND-MHT-BDL is going Manchester to Harrisburg now. My guess is there's no ramp space at Hartford to service that particular run.

My two guesses are
1.)PHL is located around a larger population base. I don't know how UPS routes all their packages but I take a guess that UPS can get packages to the Northeast via PHL by overflying SDF. They may do this strictly during the holiday season because of sheer volume
2.)PHL is a UPS European gateway with 3-4 flts/day.

ONT also gets a number of heavy charters.

I'll say. Nothing has departed or arrived since a little after midnight.

Although it looks like a few flights from MSP/DEN/CLT have either taken off (CLT) or at least left the gate (MSP/DEN). The weather is pretty much moving out - all that's left are strong winds and lots of blowing snow.

PHL is the big UPS East Coast hub. ONT is the West coast equivalent. RFD and CAE also have regional hub operations. There may be others, I'm not sure if AFW or DFW has one.

It's very nice on the ramp when they arrive and depart! GFK now has had three planes (usually 2x757 and 1x727) arriving just in the evenings, and to me, that means we're throwing 30k of mail a night, with a 5 man crew. Uff da!

Quite possibly. I took an airplane into OSC after peak and National's 70 series DC-8 was parked up there engineless, just flew up from YIP. Has/had a cracked gearbox but I have a feeling it isn't going to be leaving.

Also heard some ATI guys say the 8's were being replaced by 757's.

DFW has a regional hub for UPS. AFW is home to the competition. Both saw an increase in traffic but the most exciting thing I heard about was a one-time Atlas Air rotation for UPS at DFW.

As best as I can tell, AFW just got more company metal more often to more destinations for the holiday rush.
