DL Relaunches Scheduled B777 Flights To Europe

Sat Dec 15, 2012 1:51 pm

On December 14th, 2012 Delta commenced daily scheduled transatlantic operations with B777-200 aircraft on DTW-AMS-DTW on one of DL's three daily flights, substituting A330 aircraft on the route:

- dep. 22:20 DTW - arr. 12:10 AMS DL 248 Non-Stop B777 daily
- dep. 14:35 AMS - arr. 17:15 DTW DL 249 Non-Stop B777 daily

DL predominantly uses B777 on Asian routes, with the exception of ATL-DXB & ATL-JNB. The B777 is sporadically seen at European airports for en-route diversions or special charters. This seasonal equipment change will operate until 28 February 2013 when the A330 returns.

These winter months AMS sees the following weekly DL flights operated by A332, A333, B767, B777:

- ATL 7x A333
- ATL 5x B767
- BOM 7x A333
- BOS 7x A333
- DTW 7x A333
- DTW 7x A333
- DTW 7x B777 (some weeks 6x)
- EWR 5x B767
- JFK 7x A333
- MSP 7x A333
- MSP 7x A332 (some weeks 6x)
- PDX 5x B767
- SEA 7x A333

In Summer 2013 DL largest European hub AMS will grow to 19x daily departures, when the following additional services are added:

- ATL 7xA333
- BOS 7xA332
- DTW 7xB767
- JFK 7xB767
- MSP 7xA333
- SEA 7xB767

DL's largest non-US hub remains NRT with up to 25 departures per day using all long-haul types B747, B777, B767, B757, A333, A332.

DL Relaunches Scheduled B777 Flights To Europe

An interesting down-gauge in capacity. Perhaps the A333 is being used to South America instead? Is there more cargo carried on this route during the winter months or is this just a capacity adjustment to allow more seats to go South?

I would think that "launching" would mean that this is the first DL European service with the 777. If so, it's not quite true. For a time, DL used the 777 for SNN/DUB service.

Off topic but is DL not using the A320 family on intra-asia routes anymore?

DL never did. NW had ended the use of interport 320s before the merger in favor of the 752s.

Last time I flew SkyTeam to AMS, it was on a NW 744!
What happened to THOSE days!?!?!
Granted, it was a wretched plane, but I do like my 747's.

Doesnt DL send the 744 on DTW-AMS during summer?

They usually do. I think there are up to 5 daily flights in the summer.

DL has flown the 777 before to AMS, although it was from ATL.

Burnsie would be right about Northwest sending 4X A333 and 1X 744 (was also 5X A333) to AMS. I also thought that Delta was doing 5X daily DTW-AMS shortly after the merger

I don't think KLM has been back to DTW since the merger

One DTW-AMS flight was operated on those reconfigured 752s while routes like BDL-AMS were operating in order to rotate the 752s back to DTW rather than using an internationally configured plane on a DTW-BDL sector.

I want to say the only thing DL flew trans-Atlantic out of DTW was the short-lived A310 on DTW-LGW-FRA, before DL finally gave up on that route and sold it to NW.

There is some slack in the 777 fleet from the suspension of DTW-HKG.

Also, this is an upgauge since the 777 replaces a 763ER originally scheduled for this flight. Next summer, DTW-AMS will be 3x 333 and 1x 777 vs 3x 333 / 1x 767 last summer. The 767 fleet next summer will be heavily utilized due to the new SEA-HND, SEA-PVG, and putting multiple 767s on JFK-LAX and SEA.

Indeed, last weekend DL made several changes to its Transatlantic Summer 2013 schedule:

(1) The B777 returns to AMS from 1 July to 3 September 2013 on the 4th DTW-AMS.
(2) SEA goes 2x daily A333 (was 1xB767)
(3) BOS goes 1x A333 & 1x A332 (was 1x B767)
(4) MSP goes A333 on the 3rd flight (was 1x B767)
(5) And as reported earlier JFK gets a 2nd B767

So latest DL Summer 2013 schedule now is:

- ATL 7x A333
- ATL 7x A333
- ATL 1x B767
- ATL 6x A332
- ATL 7x A330 (KL operated)
- BOM 7x A332
- BOS 7x A333
- BOS 7x A332
- DTW 7x A333
- DTW 7x A333
- DTW 7x A333
- DTW 7x B777
- EWR 7x B767
- JFK 7x B767
- JFK 7x B767
- MSP 7x A333
- MSP 7x A332
- MSP 7x A333
- PDX 7x A333
- SEA 7x A333
- SEA 7x A333

Northwest already operated a significant number of departures at AMS, particularly in its short lived B757 period:

- BDL 1x/daily = B757
- BOM 1x/daily = B747, A333 or A332 (season dependent)
- BOS 2x/daily = A333, B757
- DTW 5x/daily = 4x A333, 1x B757
- JFK 1x/daily = B747
- IAD 1x/daily B757 (shortlived)
- MEM 1x/daily A332
- MSP 3x/daily = 3xA333/332
- PDX 1x/daily A332
- SEA 1x/daily = A333

Further back there were also daily D10 services to PHL at one time.

Not all of these services operated simultaneously, but NW maxed at 13x departures/day.

In the PMNW days, JFK also saw a 757 from AMS for a couple of months at least - I have the pictures from spotting to prove it!

EDIT: It occured to me that you may have meant this instead of 1xDaily 747, since I think the only NW 747 flight was to NRT from JFK.

Yep, I took the CDG-CVG 777 once in B-class. It was arguably my best flight ever. To make you even sadder, just after the DL 777 arrived at CVG, the AF A340 from CDG landed......(it actually left CDG early, but the A340 is slower than the 777). How about that? A 777 and A340 both arriving in CVG.

NW regularly operated the 744 on a DTW-AMS departure for years, up through 2008 Post-merger and during the economic downturn this changed, and there was not a 744 on DTW-AMS during 2009 & 2010. The 744 did return to DTW-AMS under DL in Summer 2011.

They did not operate a 744 in Summer 2012, and as of now do not have one in the schedule for Summer 2013.
