Turkish Airlines Largest Foreign Carrier In Israel

Tue Dec 18, 2012 1:13 pm

According to this Article, Turkish Arlines has overtaken Lufthansa's place as largest foreign carrier in November.

Is this a result of LH cutting frequencies and downgrade A/C to Israel??

It is a little bit difficult to say based on a single month (not to mention it was not a normal month in Israel) but no doubt LH downgrading its aircraft to Israel must take its toll.
Long live the B747

I think the trend will remain,
LH has just 3 dailies to TLV, and TK 5 dailies since October.

In Nov. TK increasede its PAX numbers by 7.6%
LH lost almost 28%

I wonder why TK dropped all of the wide body TLV flights?
But now it is very convenient with 32 x weekly TLV-IST flights, first flight at 5:50am, last one at 9:20pm; with a mixture of 738/321s.
LH must be using wide bodies??

According to LH flight plan:

TXL-TLV 2x weekly A320
DUS-TLV 2x weekly A320
FRA-TLV 2x daily A321
MUC-TLV 5x weekly A321

Total weekly: 23 flights

According to TK flight plan:

IST-TLV 32 weekly (A319/320/321/B738)

SWISS, a Group member of LH, fly 2x daily with A333. Can it be a strategy of LH Group that they want TLV pax fly over Hub Zurich?

It´s quite weird to me that LH drop the widebodies specially on both FRA sector, Offering a great Business class service and good cargo uplift seems to me a good strategy to get good yields in an usually very profitable market, almost all the european airlines use big jets to TLV, specially to allow connectivity beyond the home hubs to USA and South America. As mention here Swiss flies two daily A333 for example.

I´m sure that TK must be stealing many of the pax from European carriers because they can connect at IST to so many destinations but to fight with that you need to offer a better product, I think sooner or later we will see a LH A333 on TLV again specially the one that arrives in FRA for time to connect to the west.

TK here has a major advantage over LH/LX or any other Central European carrier. TK does not only fly PAX to America or Europe, but to Asia.

Even if TLV-IST-Asia is a detour to Asia... for obvious reasons there is not much connectivity from Israel to the East... ADD (Ethiopian), AMM (Royal Jordanian), MOW (Aeroflot/Transaero) and LY's services. That's all. TK offers by far the most destinations and even compared to Moscow (not to mention Germany or Switzerland) is a much shorter trip.

I know that´s what i said connecting to the west, but you´re very right, here TK must be doing a lot of money, because anyone willing to travel East, TK is a very good option, actually one of the few options, and with the growing network i can see more and more people using this way.

I know many airlines offer Kosher food on board as an option when you do your booking or in all the flights to TLV, do you think TK has this option??

Of course, you can choose from 21 different menus including Kosher, up to 24 hours before the flight.

Some TLV statistics of Turkish Airlines provided by LAXintl in Turkish Aviation Thread

Turkish Aviation December 2012 (by TK787 Nov 30 2012 in Civil Aviation)#64

Dest. / LF / O&D vs. Transfer / Top Transfer Dest.

Tel Aviv / 75% / 48 vs 52% / JFK, PVG, PEK, BOM, DEL

Although there is a little detour, seems most transfer PAX are heading Eastwards.

DUS-TLV 2x weekly A320
FRA-TLV 2x daily A321
MUC-TLV 5x weekly A321

And if you include SN, LX and OS, all part of LH group :

BRU-TLV 8x weekly A319/320 (daily + 2 on Sunday)
ZRH-TLV 2x daily A333 (sometimes 343)
VIE-TLV 2x daily A320/321

This brings total flights of LH group to 59 per week. So the group is still bigger than TK.

The problem with Israel is that to fly East it is necessary to make a detour around countries like Syria, Iraq, Saudi Arabia or Iran. If you look at El Al's flights to Bangkok, they fly down the centre of the Red Sea all the way out to the Indian Ocean before they can turn East towards India, and their flight to Beijing goes north towards Russia to avoid Syria and Iran (enemy territory, as they say). So I guess that Istanbul, as it is relatively close, can offer connections to pretty much anywhere in Europe, Russia and Asia plus it is known for its good service, so it's a winning combination. In this market they don't have Emirates, Etihad or Qatar Airways to compete with!

It's entirely up to the carrier. IATA is a trade association and has no authority make binding regulations. All they can do is make recommendations.

In the old days they did make those types of standards binding and IATA member airlines could be fined if they violated the rules (or undercut IATA-agreed fares), but those policies were all eliminated over the years as they were considered anti-competitive by many governments with deregulation becoming widespread.

A few airlines were fined in the 1960s or so for offering economy class meals that were too elaborate. They had to have meetings to agree on the definition of a "sandwich".

Baggage rules also used to be uniform worldwide on international routes based on IATA agreements. Now everyone is doing something different.

Thanks for clearing that one up   Still IATA defines special meal types, don't they? Even if it is up to a member to offer them that is.

TK offers some very tempting business class fares to TLV. Since LH switched to a boring 321 and still charging more or less the same, TK is a good option., especially since the difference pays for three nights in a 5* hotel in TLV.

I doubt that the penny pinchers and pencil pushers at LH did the airline a favor by withdrawing the 747/346 from TLV. To cope for the lost freight uplift, LCAG had to send 3 x weekly MD11. Thats an inferior service for Israeli shippes vs. the twice daily belly capacity. It could well be that LH passenger made the calculation without LH Cargo.
