OAG Changes 12/21/2012:AA/BA/B6/DL/F9/NKUA/US

Tue Dec 18, 2012 2:15 pm

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5 JAN 4>5 ; means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. No other months were changed. I only list one direction, although it is possible the listed change is only one way. It is too difficult to average the two directions. I assume the change is roundtrip and that is most often the case.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Non-daily operations create fractional weekly service. In most cases flights are rounded, but in the case of international service or markets with low frequency, fractions are shown. If a flight operated 5 days out of 7, it would show 0.8 flights.

WHY ARE THERE WEIRD FREQUENCIES IN FAR AWAY MONTHS FOR LCCs?
Most airlines publish schedules 11 months in advance. This report covers the next 9 months. That avoids seeing schedules as they are loaded. Several LCCs load their schedules less than 9 months into the future. Their schedules may also end mid-month. If B6 loads their schedule until Jan15, all flights in Janaury will show half frequency because of the way the report is created.

WHY IS A WHOLE AIRLINE'S SCHEDULE SHOWN AS CHANGING FOR A FUTURE MONTH?
Similarly to the previous question, some airlines load their schedule from nothing inside the 9 month window of this report. When their schedule is extended it will show as new service because there was no previous schedule to compare to. In some instances I will show a more valid comparison against another period.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE PINNACLE
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THE FREQUENCY DOESN'T SHOW A CHANGE, E.G. 4>4
This happens as a result of rounding. There is a change in service that is large enough to be listed, but through rounding it does not appear.

*************************************************
NOTE: As you might have noticed there was no update last week. For some reason the database was not updated by the schedule provider. Second time this year that occurred. Not sure if it was a mistake or if there weren't sufficient changes to warrant an update. When that happens I post it in the previous week's thread.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

*F9 DEN-AZA MAR 1.0>0.7

BTW, just to pour salt on the wound, March is easily the best month for Phoenix-Denver. Denver-ites go to Phoenix to get warm and the reverse go in huge numbers to ski. So, the argument this is a seasonal reduction is nonsense. The route just sucks and they may or may not return. That, apparently, is the definition of seasonal nowadays.

Not really a big OW reduction - infact a significant increase with multiple 744 frequency on BA (I would take a 744 anyday than 757), plus a great service. I guess this is the end of AA shop in BOS, at least internationally. Sad, they had a good presence of Eagle flights to connect to regional cities, CDG and other markets. I hope AA at least increases its domestic options in BOS with BA, JAL and other OW options to come (QR? )

This flight had a lot wrong with it, the time was weird (I love the LIT and JAN flights that leave late in the evening, but the XNA flight leaves at around 2 or some such)... PLUS it's a 3 hour flight on a CRJ which is pretty much a deal breaker for me (of course RJs are pretty much the norm in XNA on anything but AA, but I can deal with it on a shorter connecting flight and I really don't mind the ERJ all that much).

XNA is a weird little airport, though - out in the middle of nowhere, primarily centered on business traffic (primarily Wal-Mart) so the fares are astronomical... more often than not, in my experience, the planes are half empty (though in theory the yields are okay on the seats that are sold, but who knows)... I flew through CVG from there last year and there were 8 of us on the flight...

Interesting changes on the horizon for HA's mainland flights for next year; another thread talked about LA-OGG flights going double daily as well... It will be interesting to see how their complete summer schedule will look. Will there be net increases or decreases in certain markets or will there just be more shifts from HNL to Maui flying as we've already seen from the Bay area?

It's inevitable. The European economy is generally doing so atrociously right now, and more and more commercial activity is shifting to other parts of the world. DL made a big bet on secondary Europe (particularly from JFK) in the last 5 years, and while building up their JFK network that likely made perfect sense. But now, with what is happening economically and geopolitically in that part of the world, it realistically makes sense to generally retreat to larger 'core' Europe markets, and to alliance hubs (CDG and AMS, primarily). DL (and AA and UA) is better off focusing more attention on other parts of the world right now.

You have to follow the money. If the route does not work, why keep it. No difference than any other carrier.

With US you have to follow the politics:
Step 1: Find weak little market with strong political support in Washington.
Step 2: Goad DOT/FAA into awarding a slot or approving a slot transfer to allow this poor community to be served.
Step 3: Stroke the politicians to support it and say how they deserve service and only US will provide it.
Step 4: Gets slots and operate flight for as short as possible.
Step 5: Tell the community they did not support the flight, maybe they can try again in the future.
Step 6: Hide slot in another market by downgrading equipment to smaller aircraft, jacking up fares, but increasing frequency. (or increase flights to PHL until they depart every 6 minutes on Cessna 172s)
Step 7: Wash, rinse, repeat...

Just saw they did the same thing in EWR-SFO. That is one of the most blatantly anti-competitive things I've ever seen. DOT should slap them for that. A 75% frequency increase is beyond what is reasonable. Shame on them.

I'm starting to wonder if DTW-DSM is going to go mainline at some point. I believe on the schedule this change is made up of 3x CR9 and 2x CRJ (328 seats per day), which you could easily cut to 2x A319 and 1x CR9 and keep the exact same capacity ... basically doing to DTW-DSM what they've done to ATL-DSM. Or on a longer out timeline, perhaps 2x 717 and 1x CR9 and reduce capacity.

Either way, that would seem to fit with DL's strategy to reduce 50 seat flying.

Interesting that Capital to Capital isn't working very well. Another factor in play here is that the planes on this route are often affected by ZW maintenance routings, so what would happen with three YOW ron's is that ZW would send planes in CLT up to YOW to rotate them into a MX base the following day. Not sure if thats in play here or not.

Quoting enilria (Reply 19):

The thing is that of the three slots being used to add frequency to BTV, BUF, and CVG, two of them are coming from YOW, and XNA is the only one that fits into this description. There is probably no lobbying in Washington from any politician for two YOW frequencies, but there is plenty from the other three cities, especially CVG. XNA did make no sense to me at all, but if you look at all the other smaller markets out there, all of them are being spared this round.

It's slightly different, but US still trumpeted YOW as a market that would gain service through this deal and those new markets are dropping like flies to be tucked away where they won't do any harm. So we lost DL service in competitive markets and ultimately are going to gain hourly BE1s to PHL. Who was that good for?

I'm puzzled - as often - that some of the Frontier adds don't appear here.

DEN-TYS is back for the coming summer season - it's available for sale - but I haven't seen it signalled here.

Yeah I think everyone's content with using F9 through Sky Harbor. All of the good stuff is pretty much in easier reach of Sky Harbor. AZA is in a bad location if you want to get to the Canyon, the resorts in Scottsdale, or Sedona, or the Ballparks.

This report only shows changes in the schedule. DEN-TYS was not loaded into F9's schedule via a change. It was probably in their schedule extension. Since there is nothing to compare those to except a bunch of zeroes, I must compare them to the prior year...and since the flight isn't new it doesn't appear. If the flight were changed it would appear. So, it was neither loaded via a change nor was it different from the prior year so it doesn't appear.

Yes. Memphis produces minimal traffic to these secondary markets, so the fact that they have to double connect is not important.

That's confusing to me. It wasn't loaded in the schedule extension, it has only just appeared - some time after the schedule extension was posted.

Now in NW Arkansas's defense (I have sort of a love/hate relationship with the area) it's not completely podunk - it has been a booming little area (though it's been hit like most places by recent tough economic times and overdoing it on the real estate side), and it's home to at least three major corporations (Wal-Mart, Tyson Chicken and JB Hunt) plus the UofA... and for what it's worth, thanks to the Waltons Bentonville is home to what is probably one of the top American art museums in the country, Crystal Bridges, which is spectacular and absolutely worth the trip down there. So it's not Petticoat Junction or anything like that, and it was arguably worth a try by US (AA tried it before too, I think, but without many connections northward - that should have maybe been a warning sign to US but who knows). As of right now XNA has 5 flights to NYC, which isn't too shabby... again, the times and equipment on this service were just horrible, plus US doesn't have a huge presence down there, it's dominated by AA. So don't pick on poor XNA, though like anywhere in AR it's a weird little place and you're always just a mile or so away from a meth lab or a Children-of-the-Corn-esque scenario...

I don't have the numbers, but looking at it from the viewpoint of travel market to/from MEM, I wouldn't be surprised if Berlin is similar to Malaga and Pisa. In this case, it doesn't really matter how large or influential a city is in general if that doesn't result in demand to/from Memphis.

Even London is only ~20 PDEW, and Amsterdam only ~15 PDEW.

I lived in NW Arkansas for almost five years and know the area somewhat. Couple thoughts:

A) the service probably wasn't marketed much if at all. US Airways Express has a small token presence at XNA (three flights daily to CLT), their ticket counter is tiny (they don't even have self-serve kiosk computers), and they share a gate with DL.

B) The times were terrible. If I was running an airline, I'd have the flight from XNA-DCA leave NW Arkansas between 6 and 6:30 AM, for an arrival into DC before 10. And I'd have the return flight timed to leave DCA at around 7ish, for a 9 PM arrival into XNA. I'd think that'd have worked better. Pretty sure when American ran that route that's around when the times were. They have better recognition among XNA fliers. If AA couldn't make it work at XNA doubt anyone could. Perhaps someday they'll try again.

That's cool. Too bad they only last a month.

February 15 to April 13th is a bit longer than a month, at least by the math I was taught.

For those that didn't care (or bother) to read Bill's blog post:

Quote:
Effective February 15 - April 13 of next year, we’re bringing back daily roundtrip nonstops between Orlando and Oklahoma City (which we haven’t flown since 2008!), and adding NEW nonstop service between Orlando and Little Rock! We’ll also be adding a third daily nonstop roundtrip between Tampa Bay and both Columbus and St. Louis.

Then, from March 10 through April 13 we’re adding a second flight between Louisville and Tampa Bay, and between Kansas City and Ft. Lauderdale. We’ll also add a fourth daily roundtrip between St. Louis and Tampa Bay! And to make sure we show some LUV to our friends in the Valley of the Sun we’re also adding a fourth nonstop between Kansas City and Phoenix/Sky Harbor.

DTW-KIX was in late 2008/early 2009, right around the time of the merger but also at the depths of the US economic downturn. KIX was an extremely high cost airport. DTW-KIX is not coming back anytime soon.

Simply because a flight goes less-than-daily for a few months does not necessarily mean it is in danger of being cut
(enilria is going to call me out and say I'm wrong and that anytime a flight gets reduced at all or less than daily that is at risk of being cut, so be it)

The European economy and specifically Italy. The US-Italy flights rely mostly on leisure and tourism travel with a significant spike in the summer months.

Well, they'll just need 8 people and they've got their F cabin full. With the right marketing to get the message out that their product in Y is superior to anything else out of EWR (UA or the token 1x per day AA 738), they'll do fine.

Quoting enilria (Reply 23):

I wonder what will happen to the CR9 maintenance base in DSM then? It appears MEM-DSM is disappearing next Spring, maybe the additional DTW-DSM flight is because of that.

Im hoping they are starting finally to expand the banks out of DTW..i think that increasing frequency using this route as an example along with the other 3 or 4 markets seeing 1 more Daily is a signal of this. NW had 10 banks at one point and most markets are at 5-6 now with a few as high as 9 but many as low as 1-3 flights per day.
