Crazy Winds At DFW - 12/19

Thu Dec 20, 2012 4:08 am

I'm sitting here listened to the radio scanner and the winds tonight at DFW are remarkable. Anywhere between 270 and 280 degrees, with gusts to 44kt. The only runways in use are the 31s - I don't think I've ever seen this before. I've also heard recent microburst alerts advising of a 45-knot loss on a 1-mile final.

Traffic is backed up on the Alpha bridge in a giant conga line for departure on 31L. Tower seems to be doing an excellent job getting these planes in and out in such a strange and stressful situation.

METARS are crazy, with reports of blowing dust and reduced visibility...

Just a normal fast moving thunderstorm line coming through. We saw a 54 kts gust a quarter mile from my house.

We see weather patterns like this a dozen or more times a year.

Luckly, they last usually less than a half hour.

Though unsnarling the traffic at the airports takes two or three hours.

The really fun part is that today's high was near 80, and it will be 32 for the low tonight.

We've had crazy weather the last few days up here in NY too. Winds were HOWLING yesterday and today and we've had sporatic thunderstorms popping up here and there.

That's no doubt true, but how often is the airport reduced to 31L and 31R only for an extended period? They've been unable to use the N/S runways for about 2 hours now due to the sustained wind speeds.

Several AA aircraft diverted to TUL, OKC, AFW...not a fun night at all.

Pretty crazy peak wind at DAL a little while ago as well:

KDAL 200353Z 30025G35KT 1 1/2SM BLDU OVC032 21/04 A2966 RMK AO2 PK WND 29057/0259 WSHFT 0336 TWR VIS 2 TSE37RAB01E37 SLP038 TS MOVD E P0020 T02060039 $

For those unable to read METAR's, essentially DAL had a peak wind gust from the WNW at 57 knots (about 66 mph).

Got it, thanks...

Cathay 090 (B748F) just went missed due to a microburst alert - 45kt loss in all quadrants of the airfield. Looks like it's heading to IAH. Aircraft are starting to shut down on the taxiway, one after the other.

Up here in Western Illinois we're forecast to have 50mph winds tomorrow along with 5 inches of snow, give or take. Things are going to be interesting all over the place the next few days, I think. I know our DFW-MLI flight was canceled tonight along with a few others. What a bad time for travel disruptions! And I'm glad I have the next few days off work.

I flew LAX-CLE last night (12/19) and we had a "massive" tail wind, the pilot told us. The flight was completed in 3 1/2 hours and shaved off 35 to 40 minutes of the normal flying time. In the winter months this seems to be common with the jet stream, however there was a large storm system that moved out of California a couple days ago. The winds at LAX were very gusty during takeoff. I'm assuming the same weather system gave DFW the strong winds.

I flew BNA-ORD on Tuesday and saw 160 knot winds. Mostly cross wind though so it wasn't much of a help or hindrance. Gotta love winter.

Same at OKC. 31 arrivals only with a bunch of DFW diverts.

When it gets like this in DFW I've seen the ILS 36L circle to 31L to get a second arrival runway for DFW.

Using only the 31s in DFW for an extended period is not that common but it has happened many times before.

We do get those strong winds several times a year, but they are usually in March-May, and usually the 31/13 runways are unusable.

Everything looks back to normal this morning with the 36/18 runways in use - but the winds are still about 20-24 kts from 310. They should settle down later today.

Was the QF flight able to get off of Runway 31L last night? I figured that runway might be a bit short for such a long flight....

Thanks,

In the six years I was at DFW, I'd say I saw that happen maybe about a dozen to a dozen and a half times. Of course, I wasn't at work every day, but it does happen from time to time.

They sure were! When I got to work last night, the outbound traffic was taking some significant cross wind on take off. One of the Cathays and a few of the VXs rocked their wings a good bit just after liftoff, just from what I saw...

But it's been weird here the last few weeks anyway. Saw a UA 744 & a CZ A388 take off from 7L (well before the midnight turn-around) into the pattern over the last week or so.

Looks like QF actually got out about 12:15 AM or about 2 hours later than normal. It's well on it's way now.

I'm sitting at home working about 25 miles East of DFW and the winds are still howling quite a bit.

Just another typical day out here in the Plains. LOL

Things have been slowing down. Last report here sustained 28 gusting to 40 mph. It was a pretty noisy night though with the wind.

SHV saw 7 DFW mainline diversions last night, and we found out why firsthand in the wee hours this morning when the system hit our area..WOW, it was fast moving, and hard hitting with winds and rain..and then, it was over!

That explains the "swerving" during my takeoff. I flew UA Flight 753 departing at 11:12 pm, and noticed a lot of compensation "side to side" during the takeoff. I checked the flight info on flightaware and it shows we peaked out at 591 kts once we reached Chicago Center. Much of the flight at cruise was between 560 and 590 kts.

How are Ops doing today at DFW? Though windy, I don't think they should have had much of an impact. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I was QF8 out of DFW to SYD on 19th Dec. We were told before takeoff that the flight would need to divert to AKL for extra refuelling.

After boarding we sat on the plane for two and a half hours waiting for the local winds to die down so we could take off. We eventually took off at about midnight. After takeoff it was announced that everyone's luggage was left behind because otherwise the plane could not have taken off.

As a result of the lighter weight we didn't need to refuel in AKL after all. We arrived about two and a half hours behind schedule.

They had plenty of 'misplaced baggage' forms for us all to fill in on the flight, suggesting this is not an isolated occurrence. We were old that "all being well" (!!!) the luggage would be on the next days's flight - but because that flight will have to call into AKL for extra fuel, it will arrive about four hours behind the scheduled arrival time - "all being well".

I landed at 2:45am this morning on 31R. Winds were still about 300@33G39. Wasn't too difficult though with the wind being down the runway and the gust factor not too large. Fedex had 2 aborted takeoffs of the same MD10 flight due to windshear warnings on takeoff and decided to go back to the cargo ramp. Korean Air Cargo landed right behind us and they didn't report anything too bad either. Took off this morning on 35L and received a pretty bumpy ride until passing through 5000ft.

Sorry, it was too dark to see. All I know is that it was a very long taxi (about 10 minutes).

Apologies for the vagueness; normally I could have answered a question like that.

This has happened often with this flt in normal conditions.....The wrong equipment for that FLT, as it is pushing the 744ER to its limits. A friend of mine and I were scheduled for that FLT two months ago, we got bumped and shipped to LA on AA to catch a QF direct from there due to restrictions....... This is route for the 772LR or 787.

Yes, I agree. Or an A345. Or an A388.

I cannot understand why QF postponed those A380s as they would have made this a viable route. Alternatively there must be some A345s or B772LRs that could be leased at short notice.

When I arrived in SYD I went to baggage services to ask about the delivery of my baggage. It was very clear that delayed baggage from QF8 is a very very frequent occurrence; they have quite efficient and streamlined processes already in place to deal with it on a daily basis.

When I spoke (again) this morning with the baggage services people to find out when my luggage might arrive, I was told that all the luggage had to be taken off the aircraft before takeoff "because the plane had to use a short runway".

Fun weekend of work putting it back up.
