US Airways Shuttle No Longer Flies 727's.

Sat Oct 21, 2000 7:39 am

Hi everybody.
I just read that US Airways just retired the last two 727's they had, one built in 1970 for Eastern and the other one built in 1975 for Braniff. US Airways Shuttle has operated the 727 since 1992 when it bought the Trump Shuttle which consisted mostly of ex-Eastern 727's. US Airways introduced the Airbus A320 on Shuttle flights one year ago, flying out of NY La Guardia to Boston Logan and Washington Reagan (National). The Airbus A320 burns 40% less fuel than the 727 it replaces, in other words one million gallons of fuel is saved per year per aircraft. It also has more legroom and new technology features such as power ports for lap top computers. US Airways is also introducing the A319 on the Boston-Washington route currently flown with a 737. US Airways goes Airbus.

It is really sad, since most of their 727s were from my favorite airline, Eastern, and it was probably my last link to Eastern. I had earlier heard that the last one would fly on Dec. 31, 1999, so I made a special trip from DCA-LGA-DCA on that day so I could be on the last 727 flight. However, the reservations agent and US Airways website were wrong. 727s continued to fly for about ten months more.

I saw them all parked at Mojave when I went there this last Tuesday. I counted no less than 8 of them, including the only one in the new livery.

If US Airways retired their shuttle 727s, it must have been in the past two days. I just saw one at the gate on Wednesday during a visit to Washington Reagan. And I've been seeing them on the tarmac, from the Parkway, regularly for months.

Its not that sad a day. Sure the 727 is a great plane, but so is the A320.

That is thus the end of the 727 in any aspect of US operations. I have a magazine from them which my father brought me which talks about their bringing on the A320 to the shuttle and expanding its role on it.

Time marches on relentlessly.
