I came across an article in the Finnish media about the Gulf carriers and their affect on the European air travel industry. The article does not give much new information about the situation, but what caught my eye was the comment from Finnair CEO saying that as a response to the ever stronger competition from the Gulf Carriers, Finnair is now looking at tightening its ties with JAL and Cathay Pacific. Now, I do not know when the CEO has given this statement, but one could assume that the ties have indeed tightened between JAL and AY
as JAL is about to start ops between Tokyo and Helsinki alongside Finnair.
Now, what I am thinking, what was meant with Cathay Pacific, then? At the moment, AY
are code-sharing between Europe and Australia, as far as I know. But this has been the situation since 2008, if I remember correctly. Could we see a bold move from CX
in regards to starting ops to Helsinki, in the lines of what JAL is about to do? How would this work? Thoughts, anyone?
