Finnair And Cathay Pacific To Deepen Co-operation?

Fri Dec 21, 2012 11:57 am

Hi all,

I came across an article in the Finnish media about the Gulf carriers and their affect on the European air travel industry. The article does not give much new information about the situation, but what caught my eye was the comment from Finnair CEO saying that as a response to the ever stronger competition from the Gulf Carriers, Finnair is now looking at tightening its ties with JAL and Cathay Pacific. Now, I do not know when the CEO has given this statement, but one could assume that the ties have indeed tightened between JAL and AY as JAL is about to start ops between Tokyo and Helsinki alongside Finnair.

Now, what I am thinking, what was meant with Cathay Pacific, then? At the moment, AY and CX are code-sharing between Europe and Australia, as far as I know. But this has been the situation since 2008, if I remember correctly. Could we see a bold move from CX in regards to starting ops to Helsinki, in the lines of what JAL is about to do? How would this work? Thoughts, anyone?

I would see that CX would operate 2nd flight from HKG to HEL that would help AY to expand more to Asia

Bring the T7 to HEL!!!

I think this strategy AY is thinking about. To seek expansion with the present fleet. This means that any "doubles" would be given away, like Tokyo-route's 2nd flt to JAL. AY wants to expand but at present new acquisition of aircraft is a little risky due to Economic situation.

But AY does not have double flights to Hong Kong, the only double daily -route I can think of is BKK for AY.

If I'm not mistaken they did have double daily to HKG. Some time ago.

Not double daily but in past summers they have increased flights to HKG and NRT.
Summer 2013 shows 9x weekly to HKG and 1x daily to NRT, plus JL 787 service, this releases capacity to Hanoi and Xi'an.

Could this then mean that in case they want to increase flights to HKG again next Summer, the doubles would not be flown by AY but CX? How many years has HKG gone double on some days during the Summer?

They have had additional service to HKG from summer 2011 at least, the service was 12x weekly then. Don't remember the exact numbers from summer 2012, the extra service was cut from previous year.

Would be cool to see Cathay in HEL, sounds unrealistic now but who knows... Even JL 787 is becoming reality next spring

Sounds unrealistic, but then again I almost fell off my chair when I read the news about JAL coming to HEL. Without that I would not have bothered with this thread. JAL coming to HEL proves that the strategy AY and Helsinki Airport have built for years has been noted by others and maybe Asian carriers, notably OW carriers start to think well if AY why not us as well, granted they get feeder traffic from AY European network. Interesting times indeed, for both AY and Helsinki Airport.

Ps. Malaysian is joining OW soon, KUL has been "on the list" for AY already, let us see what this adds to the soup...

Finnair and Malaysia Airlines has already agreed on a code-share agreement with a view to expanding their cooperation after MH fully joins after 1 Feb 2013.

I highly doubt CX would fly to HEL unfortunately. We are not in the market situation to be launching new long haul flights. Even the existing ones are under pressure to make a profit. Short term expansion will mainly be in Asia with new 77Ws arriving to replace 744s which are being retired, and not to launch new flights yet.
