Lufthansa In Short Haul?

Hello everyone!

I would like learn your ideas about Lufthansa in short haul (in Europe)

Nowadays there are alots of low cost or smaller companies which are flying in Europe with more reasonable prices

Do you think did it affect LH?? As regarding past esp. in 80's & 90's LH had bigger improvement steps about fleet and ground services..

Also short haul fleet 32x & 737's are getting older and heavy maintanences will make them less profitable I guess. İs not it a problem for LH even they have the best maintanence company in Europe?

In my Europe flights ı generally choose LH bec they fly izmir from munich. Even they are not the reasonable priced (sunexpress is more reasonable from izmir) even they do not have the best service I guess I feel safe with them!!

I'm gonna talk as far as LCA is concerned. I don't think this effected them here because of their strong network which allows Cypriots to connect to places like the USA, Canada and other European countries, most notably Spain.

LH and Swiss are often the cheapest option for me from BUD to AMS and DUB. Of course I take FR and W6 and EI too, but there are moments that especially for business travel the LH flights are my only option.

And I take a onestop over a nonstop anytime

I guess if they have competition, you will be able to find cheap fares, but if they are the only airline flying directly to a certain destination, expect to pay a lot more.
Lufthansa has claimed many time that their short haul operation doesn't make a profit, loss after loss hence the new Germanwings operation!

I've bought a €99 return ticket from HEL to MUC a few times. Now that's reasonable, including everything: meals, luggages, OLC etc. They seem to offer this price to FRA, DUS and BER as well.

Yes definetly Germanwings is their nice option inside europe. But GW as I know flies to Antalya in summer season

I also want to know about LH cityline operations.. According to what they use it. For ex. İn early morning or late at nigt munich to amsterdam you fly with cityline planes but in day time you fly with LH. Do they use ctyline as dead time flyiers?

LH is also cheap option for me although TK is my national airline!!

Also taking LH over LCC carriers 99% of the time.
In my experience LH
- #1 reason: FF program (now senator with them, so would pay probably 25% more just to fly them given lounge access etc)
- is very competitively priced
- offers a decent product (seat pitch, hard, but free, sandwich, free coffee in MUC, FRA)
- sense of professionalism vs. sense of cheapness at LCC

Only reason why I have flown a LCC over a traditional carrier is when LCC offers nonstop where a traditional doesn't.

I have good experiences with LH and *A, whenever there was a problem with one flight it was solved by switching to another flight or airline within the group, even with the cheapest ticket. Another nice experience was when I finished a meeting earlier than expected, the agents at the check-in counter were able to put me on an earlier flight back home, if there were free seats. I usually fly between OTP, FRA, WAW and VIE, so little chance to get a LCC or something else than *A.

Every airplane needs replacement some day. Not only because maintenance costs increase, but also newer aircraft consume less fuel.

LH is in the middle of upgrading it's Europe-fleet:
- Since October 2011 they have stored and begun scrapping of 22 737s (14x 733, 8x 735). The remaining 41 frames are planned to be retired by 2016.
- LH is phasing out all 70-seaters (CR7, DH8) and has already phased out all 50-seats (CR1, CR2, AT4).
- LH has outstanding orders for: 5xE195, 1xA319, 24x A320, 25x A320neo, 2x A321, 5x A321neo. This is enough to replace all 737s, and also older A320s can be replaced by neo's once they arrive.

So they will be okay for many years ahead.

Very simple: CityLine is used when you don't need a bigger airplane than a CRJ.

Yes it did !! LH short/medium haul operations are loss making. They had to elaborate a bailout. Consequently, as from July 1 2013, all european routes will be operated by their low cost subsidiary Germanwings, which will offer 3 types of service / fare ("basic" : no catering on board, no luggage allowed - "smart" : like their current economy service, with 23 kg of luggage - "best" : premium serice like their current business class and 46 kgs of luggage).

Correct, this will affect operations from Berlin, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Hanover and Stuttgart.
