The End Of ATI's DC-8s?

Mon Dec 24, 2012 6:58 pm

Has ATI ceased all DC-8 operations now that they are retiring them? Which ones are still flying around? I know that N604BX headed out to the Mojave the other day. How much longer will they be used?

Thanks.

Drove by Mojave a few weeks ago and there were several parked out on the ramp; looked like the majority of their fleet.

Yes ATI picked up 3 757 Combi's from National. This allows the DC-8 fleet to be parked.

Here was a press release

There is an ATI DC-8-62 Combi on the ramp at BWI right now. There is a cowl open, so she's AOG.

My first plane ride was on a DC-8. Sad they'll all be gone.

End of an era. I'm sad to see them go but at least I get to enjoy their competitors for many years to come! (IE 707/KC-135).

That -60 at BWI should have just come in from the Azores. Not AOG, just post flight work.

I will miss seing the DC8's coming into Patrick Airforce base. Do not get me wrong, the 757 is cool, but not as cool as the DC-8 it replaces.

I'm sure that there were up to four DC-8 left:

- N41CX: last tracked flight 08-10-2012
- N71CX: last tracked flight 11-10-2012
- N721CX: last tracked flight five days ago
- N799AL: last tracked flight two days ago

Must be N799AL.

My only DC-8 flights were this year with A.T.I. from Sacramento to Long Beach and return (thanks to Classic Jet Tours) and the crew told us it was an amazing plane to fly.
It was N799AL.......
It's very sad to see them stored forever.

Flightaware showed a -60 on the Kwajalein-Hickam run (ATN-440) on Dec 31. Any idea on the reg?

I think it's the 70s that have been stored. 60s are still flying.

What's the sense in storing -70s and flying -60s? The -70s are sure to burn less fuel.

It could possibly be because the -70s needed a major check while the -60s still had a lot of time before overhaul. If you're not planning to keep either one much longer, it probably wouldn't make sense to spend a lot of money on a major check on a -70 if you can use a -60 and burn some more fuel. And freighters don't fly many hours so the added fuel cost would be lower than for a passenger carrier.

It's really odd. I was rolling around an owned vs leased thing, but that still doesn't make sense to retire all the 70s at once. Air cargo is going to have a rocky few months it seems, between this and Evergreen retiring its classic 747s. Bad time to be a flight engineer.
