(VIDEO) Landing @ SFO OnBoard LH Airbus A380

Thu Dec 27, 2012 6:50 pm

I've searched and didn't see this posted yet. Apologies if it has.

This is one of the best landing video's i've seen in a while!

Enjoy!

Very well done and edited. Looks like another SOLID A380 landing. This clearly was LH first 380 flight to SFO.

Thanks for sharing the video.

I have a soft spot for this airport/aircraft/airline combo since my first ride on the A380 was on LH from SFO-FRA a few months back.

Silly-cone valley. Amazing video, and got to love the difference in accents. What is the stall speed on an A388. Nice UA MX shots at 10:20. Battleship Gray in the back! And at 11:05, with the UA takeoff behind the A380 water greeting.

That's what i was wondering as well and found this on flightglobal.com:

Quote:
While flying the aircraft at FL140 with 73t of fuel, Config Full (slats 23°, flaps 33° and 10° of aileron droop) was selected with landing gear down. In idle power with full aft stick, a maximum AoA of 14.2° was reached at 118kt, quite a low speed for such a large aircraft.

The one thing that struck me the most when watching an A380 land is how slow it glides. Those enormous wings make it look like a kite floating in the wind.

Wow. Slow stall speed, and it's so big it looks even slower.

Great video, but something I noticed with the flight deck communication.

The handler sometimes refers to LH454 super, LH454 heavy, and then just LH454.
Is the heavy still used/required in communication?
What's the protocol when referring to the flight these days?

People said the same thing about the 747 when it first came out. It's an illusion created by the sheer size of the aircraft. It may look like it's just hanging there, but it's really flying at about 160-180Knts it's the size that makes it look slower.

Fantastic video, one of the best I have ever seen.

Fantastic video... I love the various camera angles... The Captain seems ticked off at 0.35 seconds...

No it wasn't... The video shows scenes from the wonderful PilotsEye.tv film 'Lufthansa A380 Frankfurt-San Fransisco, the final flights of JR'. JR was the former chief pilot and board member of Lufthansa and he was accompanied by PilotsEye during the last flights before his retirement.

No, the water cannon salute was due to the retirement of the captain.

I guess I'm the only one wondering whether PilotsEye allowed this guy to publish the video since its taken from their DVD.

There's no doubt the size contributes to the perception.

But the A380 DOES have very low stall speeds compared to most other widebodys, and certainly compared to a 747

I really enjoyed watching that.

The tail cam on the A380 will make window seats seem far less attractive. I'm normally pinned to the tail cam on take-off and landing rather than look out the window.
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

Though a few times the ATC people referred to it as heavy - guess they'll get used to the new "super" designation as time goes on.

Just out of interest, would that captain and copilot be ex A330/340 crew or could they previously have been flying B747? Is there any particular policy when it comes to previous experience/airliner types for LH A380 flight crew?

Both of them came from the A330/A340 fleet, because of a company policy to shorten the transition. Experience on Airbus FBW aircrafts makes the A380 typerating easier and for the airline off course cheaper.
But the policy changed and in 2012 Lufthansa transferred also several Boeing pilots into the A380 cockpits.

The 'callout' voice is British...I've not heard that before. Rather rude calling the pilot 'retard'......JOKE!

It's frequently used as a VFR navigational aide and reporting point when flying around the Bay Area.
