BAW New Routes Performance?

Thu Dec 27, 2012 9:53 pm

With the BAW Heathrow to Leeds and Rotterdam routes being in operation for a few weeks I was wondering if anyone had any info on their pax loads?

Just 2 of many new routes, including ZAG DUB BHD GYD TBS. I've flown on DUB a few times and loads are always good. Flown GYD once, was lowly loaded but times have changed from the BD days as things get jigged about. A low load overall but full up front!

I have noticed that on many days one of the 4 LBA rotations was cancelled... In Summer 2013, LBA will go down to 3 daily flights. This might mean that the route is underperforming for the time being.
Next flights : BRU-ZRH-CAI (LX)/ BRU-FCO-TLV (AZ)

As from Rotterdam, i've heared that the loads are quite resonable given the capacity of (3 dailiy rotations) the route and the fact that the december month is usually not the best month for starting new routes.
On average, between 70 and 80 passengers per sector this week.
However before Christmas some flights were almost fully booked.

While RTM is witnessing both A319 and A320s on its 3x/daily schedule started early December. Judging from the fare levels on BA.com the route is not doing too badly at all, as some classes are sold out regularly. This may be somewhat surprising as BA raised LHR-AMS frequencies and capacity (to B767) this Winter as well - to reach upto 9x daily on some days of the week. Today for example BA operates 2x B767s to AMS.

BA on LHR-AMS/RTM combined stands at 12x/daily from LHR.
KLM on LHR-AMS stands at 12x/daily
EZY on LON-AMS stands at STN 3x, LTN 4x, LGW 5x, SEN 2x = 14x/daily

Though its great to hear about BA's performance on the Euro routes... but does anyone have any idea on how their ICN route is doing? Esp with all that competition it'd be great to see.

LON-AMS is a very busy BA route. In addition to the flights from LHR there are their three-times daily LGW-AMS-LGW and their five-times-daily LCY-AMS-LCY rotations. None is showing any obvious signs of being impacted by the launch of the RTM flihghts even though, just like these three LON airports, the Dutch airports are less than 30 miles from each other (by the great circle route).

[BA on LHR-AMS/RTM combined stands at 12x/daily from LHR.]

BA also fly Gatwick-Amsterdam 3 or 4 times daily depending on the day of the week.

Spoke to someone who flew the LBA route recently who said the loads were way below 40 on his flights

This is an old BD route that BA has relaunched, rather than one it inherited. It will be interesting to see if things can pick up. I suspect it's very much a route where feed is considered above O&D traffic, and BA wouldn't have gone to the trouble of launching it if it did not believe there was going to be demand.

I expected the RTM route to do very well. but it is also surprising that the loads to AMS are not affected whilst the frequency LHR-AMS was also increased.
There were some speculations that BA is considdering to improve the flight times to RTM in order to match the network of the one-wold airlines even better. The possibility of a nightstopper in RTM is rumoured, however depending on the capacity of RTM as there is a peak for arrivals in the late evening and peak departures in the morning.

Lets hope the loads pick up fast.

Family members of me have flown RTM-LHR before Christmas and they said the flight was almost full.

The RTM flights I've flown on so far have been a bit of a mixed bag. This time of year makes it a bit difficult to gauge really if the route will be a sucess. But I'm keeping everything crossed that it is kept on.

If the LBA route has any element of LHR slot sitting from BA's perspective then IIRC BA are able to cancel a certain percentage of a flight's schedule and still retain the slot. However, that's not very helpful if you are a passenger

I don't think that BA or we should automatically expect that all new flights are successful, for example Ryanair are prepared to open and very quickly close a new route if it doesn't perform (and have done this lots of times), allowing them to experiment and see whether there is demand. If LBA doesn't work for BA, I am sure it will be quickly closed and the slots used elsewhere.
