Can someone please tell me why airliners, especially the Asian carriers (ie. Singapore, China, etc) seem to be retiring their A300 and A310 so quickly and replacing them with A330 and A340. These planes are as old as the 747-100, 747-200 and the DC-10s. Replacements are very expensive? Were there a problems with the A300/A310 aircrafts?

I cannot speak for the airlines themselves but I have heard that the older A300s (the B series) had corrosion problems due to poor material preparation prior to assembly which led to water seepage between the laminated sheets of metal. This invariably meant more expensive repairs more frequently.

Airlines such as SIA also turn over planes rapidly in order to keep completely up-to-date and have the newest planes available at all times. This goes hand-in-hand with their desired images.

Additionally, the growth of air travel in Asia is such that the larger A330 is often needed to replace the smaller, older crafts.

Just my 2 pennies' worth.

Asian airlines, as well as European airlines, tend to replace their aircraft earlier as US airlines. For example: Compare the number of B727 in US with other regions (apart from Iberia  ).

i wonder too why the A300-600 and the A310 are being replaced so fast

If we look now the the technologies used in these new generation Airbuses I'm sure airlines would like to replace faster their old A300/A310's. This family and also the early generation B. 757/767 are also in a process of replacing because in all these years lots of things changed. I think for Airbus the fact that they're publishing that you can have a one cockpit convertion from A318/319/320/321/330/340 cannot work out with the latest generation of the A300-600R and the A310-300, so in my opinion A300/310 will soon end the production. About the airline of my country TAP/Air Portugal they're going to replace, starting next year the A310-300 by the A330-200's and I've talked with a TAP pilot that told me that even in the first A320's TAP received ( CS-TNA/B/C/D ) are already big differences compared with the lattest ones they received from last year ( CS-TNE/F/G/H/I/J ) so as you can see aircraft builters are going very fast!!!
