Quote:
“LAN Airlines is proud to offer US passengers the option to travel on the 787 Dreamliner from Los Angeles to South America,” said Pablo Chiozza, Vice President, USA, Canada and the Caribbean, LATAM Airlines Group. “The 787 Dreamliner is a testament to our commitment to ensuring the comfort of our passengers, minimizing our environmental footprint and doing what we do best, connecting and transporting passengers to our unparalleled network of destinations in South America.”

“We are honored LAN chose LAX for this new, historic service that will greatly enhance the passenger experience,” said Gina Marie Lindsey, Los Angeles World Airports executive director. “LAN is the first international carrier offering daily international service on a new-generation Boeing 787 Dreamliner between South America and the U.S. West Coast.”

Another note, this is LAX's first 787 route by a foreign carrier, and LAN joins United operating 787s out of L.A

LAN Airlines is the first carrier in the Americas to take delivery of the 787; as well as the first carrier in the Americas to operate revenue flights with the 787. Thus far, LAN has deployed the 787s on the SCL-EZE and SCL-LIM routes. The SCL-LAX route is the carrier's first long-haul route. The SCL-LIM-LAX route will be the carrier's second long-haul route. Today's flight from SCL to LAX is the first long-haul commercial flight operated with the 787 from South America.

Good for LAN, but disappointed to see that we won't see the 787 on the LIM-LAX route until February. Lots of people, including my brother, bought a ticket to fly on the 787 in January as planned and now they'll have to fly again on a 767. Why can't LAN keep its word ? I know it's not the end of the world but still...

While it will take a long time to do, won't LATAM become one airline and ultimately have a combined fleet of 787's, 777w's brand new 767's and a whole bunch of A333's? And doesn't TAM have A350's on order too? If they operate as one single airline ala UA/CO or DL/NW, wouldn't they cross fleet and put the right ac to the right mission? Therefore seeing a 787 out of GRU or a 777W out of SCL and even a 787 out of GIG etc, etc?

It will give LATAM a lot of flexibility. Years off perhaps, but no different than when UA has 50 787's and 25 A350's in an already flexible fleet! Correct?

Either way hats off to LAN!

Do you think this might force UA's hand to have an LAX or SFO non-stop to GRU? Start SCL from IAH? Once TAM is gone from Star?

LAN held back the a/c due to the various media outlets that were reporting on LAN's first long-haul 787 flight. Did you notice the arrival time of LA602 into LAX? The same applied to LA603.

This LAN being the first airline to start international flights out of LAX isn't as spectacular as it appears because only 2 days later UA will commence LAX-NRT flights with the 787.

Good news to see the B787 assuming her real duties: Long Haul!
Those shorter legs for 787 crew training excite me less!
Geographically SCL has got some great potential for this plane!

Also good to see Latin America play a leading role for a change, if only we got A380 visiting us more often!

Schedule:
Effective 01JAN13 the SCL-LAX route will operate 3x weekly with the B-787:
LA602 SCL 23:50 LAX 06:10+1 787 (Tu, Th, Sa)
LA603 LAX 14:25 SCL 06:05+1 787 (We, Fr, Su)

Effective 31JAN13 the SCL-LIM-LAX route will operate daily with the B-787:
LA600 SCL 21:55-23:35 LIM 01:35+1-07:15+1 LAX 787 Daily
LA601 LAX 12:30-23:45 LIM 01:45+1-07:00+1 SCL 787 Daily

I imagine this has been discussed before on other threads but it seems like an awful lot of turn-time at LAX for this precious new airplane -- over 8 hours on the ground at LAX for the current schedule, and over 5 hours starting at the end of the month when LIM-LAX begins. Either I'm missing something here or that's a lot of down time during which the Dreamliner can't be helping to pay for herself!

Anyway, congrats to LAN on a lot of firsts! Another nice example of how the 787 is opening up new airways around the world.

LAN is also doing this on their MAD 787 flights and what I've read it is apparently done to tackle issues they may encounter or "hiccups" as some call it. Remember that LAN has a few early built 787 models which are more prone to technical issues. I'm sure this will be ironed out over time.

These flight times are very similar with the flight times of LAN's current B763 services into LAX. Passengers traveling between deep South America and North America prefer red-eye flights. Also, these flights are timed to offer connections to/from LAX via the LIM and SCL hubs. For example, this is the current schedule for LA600/LA601:

LA600 SCL 22:15-00:01+1 LIM 01:20+1-07:15+1 LAX B763 Daily
LA601 LAX 12:30-00:05+1 LIM 01:25+1-06:50+1 SCL B763 Daily

Totally correct, as is why FRA will be ditched for three months starting in april with the first B787 flights to MAD. 2-3 hours of checks and maintenance are required in MAD after the transatlantic run, thus no time for the MAD-FRA-MAD leg ... after 2-3 months that time goes down to 90 min max, allowing for the FRA shuttle again.

Did they make a public announcement about that? I was under the impression that decision was not taken yet based on the last press I read. It does seem like Brazilians would want their own flag carrier, but I'm also read that since VARIG died that Brazilians don't care as much as they used to..opening the door for a pan LAN-TAM airline?

It would give them amazing flexibility with the number of widebody types: no?

Maybe too many types can be expensive in the long run. I bet LATAM will get rid of some subtypes and try to keep the fllet as simple and economically viable as they can. They're pretty smart people who know their business, and that seem to be the smart way to go.

Was Thu/Fri SCL-LAX-SCL substituted with a 767? If I'm not mistaken and with three frames, why not just sub it with another 787?

BBA is currently en route to LAX.

I came across a tweet earlier asking what LAN's 787 was still doing at LAX but the person didn't really get a good look and flightaware showed none operating into LAX at all on Thu. Maybe he was right and CCB was still at LAX... above flightaware link does appear to be CCB finally departing LAX again, just showing incorrect type.

That's why I told earlier about the long turn around times LAN is using, as some of these 787's are early built models which tend to have more technical issues (either small or big).

There is something wrong with the times stated, it is just not possible that the flight to MAD takes 1:15 hrs longer with the 787 when compared with the A343, but the flight to SCL actually takes 1:10 hrs less   ?

Differing daylight savings time regimes... remember that these two cities are in different hemispheres.

Beginning on 01APR13 the B-787s will be deployed on long-haul routes between SCL and MAD. LAN will deploy the A-343s on the SCL-LIM-LAX route daily until the airline receives its fourth B-787. The B-787 will be redeployed on the SCL-LIM-LAX route starting in June.

LA600 SCL 21:15-00:01+1 LIM 01:20+1-08:15+1 A343 Daily
LA601 LAX 13:45-00:20+1 LIM 01:35+1-06:00+1 A343 Daily

LAN Perú will operate the LIM-LAX route 6x weekly utilizing the B-767-316ER:
LIM 12:40 LAX 19:35 B763 6x weekly
LAX 00:20 LIM 10:55 B763 6x weekly

LAN continues to maintain flexibility with its widebody fleet as LATAM Airlines Group will receive 2 B-787s, 2 B77Ws, and 5 new B-767-316ERs this year (with options for 4 more B-767-316ERs).

Yeas, they expected that ... but also expect Boeing and part / anciliery suppliers to speed up in fixing the problems.

Hi SCL767, regarding flight LA 2605 (LAX-LIM), is LA going to stick with the B763 or are they planning to use the 787 for this flight? I'm taking this flight in April and I was hoping to get a chance to flight this new bird.

LA2604/LA2605 are flights operated by LAN Perú. Currently, LAN Airlines is the only LATAM Airlines' subsidiary that operates the 787. The 787s will continue to operate on the SCL-EZE, SCL-LAX and SCL-LIM-LAX routes until the end of March. Then starting on 01APR13, LAN will deploy the 787s on the SCL-MAD route; which will increase in frequency to 9x weekly. On 07JUN13, the 787 will be redeployed on the SCL-LIM-LAX route 4x weekly operating LA600/LA601:
LA600 SCL 21:05-00:01+1 LIM 01:20+1-08:00+1 LAX 787 (Tu, We, Fr, Su)
LA601 LAX 14:00-00:20+1 LIM 01:35+1-05:50+1 SCL 787 (Mo, We, Th, Sa)

And that's jumping out of a building and smiling?

That's a bad commercial right there IMO.

I'm sorry.

The commercial isn't that bad but it is missing something: The (massive) delay risk you have now when chosing this new way to fly.

The last week the CC-BBC suffered a failure in its generators leaving the aircraft AOG during three days in LAX. Bad for the first long haul service for this aircraft.

Regards,

That is bad yes but it is the risk the airline takes when being one of the first to operate a brandnew aircraft type. The first year of operation of a brandnew aircraft type is always full of technical issues, both small and big. After a year orso the aircraft type becomes more relaible and airlines who will receive the 787 by then will have an aircraft that is much more matured by then.
