EK To Go 5x Daily BKK ,4X KUL ,3X MNL

EK has announced that beginning 31st march 2013, they will fly 5 daily to bangkok including two A380 services

they will also start 4th daily service to KUL, and also 3rd daily service to MNL.

cgk also will get an extra daily service.

This in addition to the daily HKT flight which makes them see 35 flights a week to BKK and 42 flights a week to Thailand ex DXB.

Now thats awesome news!

Good God, they just never seem to stop. Don't get me wrong, I'm very happy for EK and what they are accomplishing, but holy cow. I just don't know how they do it.

Emirates Adds 5th Daily Bangkok Service from late-March 2013

Emirates starting 31MAR13 is launching 5th daily service on Dubai – Bangkok service, initially operated by 3-class Airbus A330-200 aircraft. From 01SEP13, the new flight (EK376/377) will switch from A330-200 to 3-class 777-300ER aircraft with First Class Suite. Reservation for this new flight opened this morning.

Thats an amazing amount of capacity! Well done EK!

In addition, EK also has a codeshare with TG to DXB. Thats a lot of options to get to DXB!

Yes, the presence of EK in Southeast Asia really is astounding! This means that the daily number of flights between Dubai and the region will add up to 21 daily flights, which is incredible!

Bangkok: 5 daily (388, 77W, 77W, 77W, 773)
Singapore: 4 daily (388, 77W, 77W, 77W)
Kuala Lumpur: 4 daily (388, 77W, 773, 332)
Manila: 3 daily (77W, 77W, 77W)
Jakarta: 3 daily (77W, 77W, 77W)
Ho Chi Minh City: 1 daily (77W)
Phuket: 1 daily (332)

And although the expansion in this region is huge, I wouldn't expect EK to be nearly finished. If rights are granted in the future, MNL and CGK will either get a fourth daily or the A380 if it becomes available in a 2-class configuration.
Also, I think we can expect them to launch more secondary cities, such as DPS, SUB, CEB and the likes...

HAN and RGN are most probably likely ASEAN destinations we will see in the next couple of years from EK.

Some of the BKK/SIN/KUL flights continue onto other destinations (e.g. HKG/SYD/MEL/BNE) so they are not "pure" DXB-BKK/SIN/KUL rotations. Alot of the traffic on these flights will only be flying passengers from DXB to the end destination. Nevertheless, it is still some very impressive figures.

This just shows that they are a transit-airline for 99% of their seats. Mainly shuffling Europeans to their Asian holiday destinations (regarding the airports mentioned by the OP).

I would hope the EU would limit their slots and airports much more. Don't let them transport more than 150 or 200% than their O+D traffic between Dubai and the destination airports. EK would go bust sooner or later...


Instead we let them operate how many flights they want and reduce profit margins of our home airlines. And no one wants to see the advantages they have financially, be it labour costs or taxes...

They'd do very well on the DPS route if it is non-stop from DXB I think.

Someone know if QR's flight from DPS has a decent amount of through traffic to DOH? When I took the flight DPS>SIN, it was full of Russian tourists heading on to Europe and Russia. Eliminating the layover in Singapore would probably help a lot.

Perhaps those home carriers could quit complaining and start doing something about it.

I struggle to understand how you reach that conclusion? or do you assume that KUL, MNL, BKK and SIN dont have their own local market?
BKK might be a tourist driven market but the other three markets is everything but tourist driven.

To MNL, the main driver isnt Europeans but traffic to and from the gulf. A mix of maid express together with labourers and business traffic.
To KUL, I might suggest a quick glance at the visitor numbers from the gulf to Malaysia for you. Will be enlightening. Quite a decent number. Malaysia for example saw trade with the UAE quadruple over the last ten years and UAE is now one of Malaysias top 5 trade partners. There is no need to rely on Europeans from KUL.
SIN as a holiday destination is a new one. Expensive citybreaks. Nah, EK cater for the businesstraffic and is a favourite among the large amount of westerners living there. A one stop about half way is pretty ideal compared to a stopover in one of the European hubs.

That EK also fill up seats to Bangkok with European tourists is not disputed but they dont fly there 4 times daily to cater for European holidaymakers au contraire. BKK gets a fair share of visitors from the gulf and Africa as well.

Its easy to have a go at EK. but Id suggest we then need to look into other amounts of transfer passengers. For example those that LH takes between India and US. That shouldnt be allowed either if we start restricting EK...

You both point out exactly what are the unfair advantages of the ME carriers.

And you don't have to "ban" them to solve the problem. But just install a quota related to O+D traffic. Perhaps at 200% of the seats the O+D market would fill up. Perhaps a little bit higher. Whatever the major network carriers want.

Its actually 5 daily A380 or soon will be. This has been discussed to death. EK are clearly offering a service the public want otherwise they wouldn't fly with them. Increased competition is good as it means all airlines up their game and fight for passengers rather than just rely on their position.

How is EK able to fill so many flights to JED outside the Hajj season? Do they charter aircraft during that month since demand to JED is so much higher then?

BA currently fly 2 services daily LHR to Dubai as well as Virgin daily Service.

Being a regular on the DXB/LHR service EK fly so many times because there is demand not just because they feel they want to. Word on the BA and VS flights is that they are heavily loaded as well...

True, but unfair practices like low taxes and missing labor restrictions eventually kill the competition - in this case look at AF and the like leaving BKK for example. Soon it will only be the gulf carriers funneling pax to the region, after which prices will go up. That is the definition of an oligopoly.

I wouldn't be so sure in the case of European carriers. SK is suspending its CPH-BKK flts soon (after serving Thailand for over 60 years) and there is no certainty it will return given its financial predicament and the competition from Norwegian this summer. LH has hinted that poor yield may also prompt it to pull out of Thailand.

With all the competition it's not surprising that airlines struggle to BKK, I don't think this is strictly related to the ME3 airlines, though they certainly play a large part.
