DL B763ER Interior Mods Schedule Part 2

Wed Jan 09, 2013 4:41 pm

Since the previous thread got archived, I thought I would start a Part 2 and copy the last current info and post relevant updates.

Previous Thread:
DL B763ER Interior Mods Schedule? (by audidudi Nov 18 2012 in Civil Aviation)

Looks like ship 1603 came out of mods and flew NRT-SFO today:
http://flightaware.com/live/flight/N1603

76G C30W38Y140
All Ships: 1501-6, 1521 [7 aircraft]
Completed or in Mod: 1521* = 1/7 (14.3%)

76L C36W32Y143 (*35 Business for sale, 1 for crew rest)
All Ships: 171-172, 174-186, 1200-1201, 1601-1606, 1701-1708 [31 aircraft]
Completed or in Mod: 1601-3, 1604*, 174, 182-3, 185, 1200-1201, 1605-6, 1705, 1708* = 14/31 (45.2%)

Looks like 1604 and 1708 went into mods over the past few weeks according to flightaware, can anyone confirm?

76T C36W29Y143
All Ships: 1607-1613 [7 aircraft]
Completed: 100%

76Z C26W29Y171 (*25 Business for sale, 1 for crew rest)
All Ships: 187-199 [13 aircraft]
Completed or in Mod: 191, 197*, 199 = 3/13 (23.1%)

Note: 199 has been in DTW for Wifi mods for several weeks, 191 is back to active flying in the new config.

Total Complete: 25/58 (43.1%)

As previously noted...
-There may be others in for mod that I'm not privy to
-Aircraft that are either in mod or presumed to be in mod are indicated with a *

Sorry - can you please remind me what exactly is being done to the 763s? Is it only international a/c that are being updated?

This is incorrect - as was stated on the previous thread the new 76G will have the same exact seat counts as the new 76Z. Furthermore the 76G ship type will go away once all mods are done, leaving 76Z as the sole high capacity ship type.

Other aircraft presumed to be in mods:
172 (Last seen at NRT 12/27/12)
190 (Last seen at NRT 12/23/12)

1708 flew ANC-KIX on 1/3/13 which is an unusual routing if it was going into mods so I didn't put it on my list yet, but if it doesn't reappear in the next week or so it probably is in mods.

Forgive me for not knowing all of the ship numbers, but what about the former Gulf Air 767's? When are these to be completed fully? I'm on one 11 days from now - KATL to EIDW and apparently my aircraft only has big screen entertainment, (nothing in the seat backs at all). Or am I mistaken? Will my flight have the new in flight entertainment system in place? The flight is DL176 - January 21st.

Well according to ecrew, you're on a 7ER, which usually means its a 76U(a non-reconfigured aircraft), but the aircraft I had scheduled coming home from CDG the other day was supposed to be a 7ER which turned out to be a 76L(ship 185). We took a delay becus of a shortage of O2 bottles required for high-terrain ops and had to be installed by tech-ops

Ship 1701 (the Habitat plane) may also have just entered mods as well.

So the current ships in mods are:

#172 - N172DN - will be a 76L
#190 - N190DN - will be a 76Z
#197 - N197DN - will be a 76Z
#1604 - N1604R - will be a 76L
#1708 - N178DZ - will be a 76L

and maybe #1701 - N171DZ - will be a 76L

I don't believe any of the 76G (Gulf planes) have started mods yet; ship 1521 (N394DL) I heard was in for maintenance, not mods.

I'm glad they seem to be doing the mods at a rapid pace. It is a HUGE improvement over the current layout. I just wish they would put AVOD in the A319/A320(those that are not approaching retirement) and the MD-90/738(entire) fleet.

How long does it take to modify each aircraft? Looks like a lot of work. I've flown the new updated versions and they are 100x better than the old versions...which some are looking decidely raggy these days

Usually around six weeks purely for the mods. A few have taken longer as they also had other maintenance work done or had winglets added...

I second this, flew the reconfigured N1200K in BizElite right after Thanksgiving JFK-ATL and the flight was a dream, I truly did not want to get off the airplane when we landed! These birds can not be modded soon enough!

In a post on Flyer Talk, Chris Babb of Delta stated that they would be rolling out at a pace of 1 ship per week until the summer season gets going. That is an impressive schedule.

I remember reading the same, but it's interesting that only 3 76Z's have been completed out of 20 aircraft. I wonder how all of these ships will be ready for Summer 2013 flying, especially since DL has expressed the desire to run the 76Z on transcon as well as AsiaPac runs with its lighter J cabin.

It's a tall order but maybe doable.

As of now 3 76Zs have been completed (191, 197 and 199), and 2 more are currently in mods (if we consider that N194DN went in for mods to replace N197DN in the conversion line) So maybe by summer there should be enough to have a few for transcon service and moving through LAX and HNL to do FUK and NGO runs. As per DL.com, NRT-SFO and NRT-PDX should also be using the 76Z by March.

Right now, the summer schedule shows the 76Z on:

JFK-LAX (4x daily, but probably requiring about 3 frames)
JFK-DUB (daily)
JFK-PRG (daily)
JFK-CPH (6x weekly)
HNL-NRT (daily)
HNL-NGO (daily)
HNL-FUK (daily)
SFO-NRT (daily)
PDX-NRT (daily)
NRT-PVG (daily)
NRT-PEK (daily)
SEA-HND (daily)

That would be about 14 frames required.

Based on the schedule he posted, there would be 42 done by June, with the remaining 16 still in the 76U old config. The remaining 16 would start to go into mods again starting in September.
There are currently 22 completed as of today.

So it appears that the new 76Z configuration will be deployed primarily in the transpacific and also to weaker transatlantic markets in addition to premium transcontinental markets. But what I continue to find is that the 76Z configuration with J-class occupying 11.5% of the cabin still burdens DL with a Business Elite cabin that remains too big for many beach markets where DL plans to send the 76Z.

It's better than what they have now, which is 30+ Business Elite seats. Plus on the six door 76G (which was supposed to be the only 76Z variant before they decided to convert additional 76Us to this configuraiton as well), J-class ends at 2R/2L. If Delta wanted additional coach seats they would have to put in a row or two and create a mini-cabin ahead of 2R/2L.

From what I heard, 2L boarding on the 76G is not very common unlike the 764; most of the time the 76G is boarded from 1L. Not sure if it would be much of an issue having a Y cabin forward of the 2L/2R doors. The 764s actually did when they were in domestic configuration, and were still usually boarded from 2L wherever possible.

Yep, basically the same as the 764. It's like a brand new airplane on the inside. I've only had the chance to fly on one thus far, but they've done a really nice job, IMO. Pics below.

The lavs are really nice and spacious (at least up in Business) too - automatic faucets, color lighting...and they are now in the front of the J cabin (instead of in the back, like on the 764). And the IFE selection has been significantly enhanced as well - with over 300+ movies (same as on the 74S now).

Looks like ship 198 may be the next one going in now that 1604 is back in service. 198 is flying ATL-SFO-NRT today....

I have an upcoming flight on a 76L (STR-ATL on Feb 8). On my booking, USB ports in economy are listed under the amenities. Does that mean I'm on a modded ship?

Ship #189 (N189DN) may be the next to go into mods, if it hasn't already. It last flew from GUM-NRT on Jan 30th.

It went in for mods when N1604R went back into service.

Ship 188 (N188DN) - to be a 76Z - has now gone to Paya Lebar for mods (replacing ship 172 which just went back into service).

So, the in-progress ships are now:

N188DN - 76Z
N189DN - 76Z
N194DN - 76Z
N198DN - 76Z
N171DZ - 76L
N178DZ - 76L

One update and one question.

Ship #1701 (N171DZ) has been completed and is flying from QPG-NRT today and NRT-SFO tomorrow.

http://flightaware.com/live/flight/N171DZ.

Ship #190 (N190DN) completed mods in January but was photographed in February without winglets. Surely this would normally be done as the same time as the interior mods; at least ship #182 now has winglets after being modded, but were they installed at the same time? It seems strange that #190 is still flying without winglets and is flying long-haul flights.

Great job Delta on this. 767, my favorite plane is getting a new life there...

The interior looks good. Saw similar things being done at Austrian in a different thread here on a.net, as FYI:

767: http://www.red-blog.at/en/2013/02/ga...efit-of-the-boeing-767-in-shannon/
It would be nice to see a timeline photo slideshow for DL as well

Curious to know if DL has stated how much these mods cost them and how long they intend to keep their modified planes for?

Next to go into mods is ship #184 (N184DN). FlightAware sometimes deletes the flights to and from QPG, so if it no longer shows this ship flying as DL 9978 from NRT-QPG on Feb 21st, then you now know why!
