Fri Jan 11, 2013 10:11 am

About an hour inflight now, the first 787 flight to SJC with ANA is underway. Track it here-

Once again, I congratulate SJC on this new service! Another very good example of the Dreamliner helping to change commercial aviation. I hope the route is a success for both ANA and San Jose.

Stay tuned for yet another long haul service from SJC that is currently being planned as we speak.

I was just guessing because the poster is showing a Korean flag and Asiana, a*A carrier, would it in with the new *A carrier, NH. But then again, I always thought a Taiwan Carrier, BR/CI, would be a canadate.

As for a European carrier, none, besides LO, have a 787 in their fleet and most are locked into SFO.

Looks like it's at the gate now.

Will the NH flight do the same interesting departure that the AA flight to NRT used to do? They'd level off at 5000 feet and overfly the SF Peninsula at that altitude until getting over the ocean at about Pacifica. It was VERY scenic. I did once see the AA 777 overhead going around the Loop departure.

Who says it has to be a 787s? A 763 could do it too. I'd bet on BA doing SJC-LHR.

Remember that AA did SJC-TPE for about six months in 2001. From what I heard, loads were good but 9/11 and AA's general giving up on SJC doomed it.

Yeah!!! Thanks for the great photo. Looks like they departed from 30R, which is pretty standard - and about a 6000 foot takeoff roll (you can see the runway remaining marker for the other direction).

Tom was going to try to get a photo of it at the gate, so hopefully we'll get to see that too.

I'm personally coming to SJC about monthly for family reasons, but unfortunately couldn't coincide my visit with this very special event. Otherwise, I'd have been right there with Seahawks757 taking photos.

Anybody know what departure pattern they flew?

That sort of answers it. If they had to go around the loop departure (which the AA NRT flight did on rare occasions), they would have turned right after takeoff. Sounds like they did the straight departure, which requires a level-off at 5000 feet until they get out over the ocean.

Would they be able to make the route work, though? I feel like they might not be able to fill a 77W and probably not an A359 either (especially since neither would have much connecting traffic), so, unless an A333 can fly that route, they might've already ruled it out themselves.

767 are old school and are on their way out at most airlines. The airport already talked to BA the last couple of years and they passes along with VS. I say it will be an Asian carrier.

The loads were good because of the price. You could fly round trip for $450. Just like NH, the SJC side is almost all O&D. The connections are all on the other side.

Yep, that was the one of the main missions of the 787, to enable new point-to-point non-stop service to operate profitable.

Four cities have (or will) already gain new non-stop NRT service because of the 787: SJC, SAN, BOS, DEN. I would think that DL could make SLC work too if they had 787s anytime soon.

Quoting legacyins (Reply 18):

Yeah, that's true for NH. AA had more connections on the SJC side when they did NRT: BOS, AUS, LAS, SNA, SAN, etc. In any event, I think the route will do great.

787 service to NRT now from SEA, SJC, LAX & SAN. They all line up over the Aleutians, catch up with BOS and land over an hour and a half.

Wow it is strange to watch a video of a plane that you are actually on landing.

The flight from NRT to SJC was wonderful and a trip report will be on its way after I process through the 300 plus pictures.
JA813A was in charge of the inaugural duty and it went without a hitch.

I also stayed for the SJC to NRT inaugural ceremony - a bit more excited in the SJC front for sure.

Trip report is coming!

Technically, smallest with Asia service I would say is probably San Diego.

Smallest with out service, Ontario and Long Beach come to mind.

Korean was very secretive for the longest time; in fact the airport even measured to see if the Korean B-748 cargo plane could park on the cargo ramp. After all the wooing, Korean wanted the airport to budge on the airport curfew so they could run a late night dual passenger and cargo operation with the cargo flight leaving around 2am. Airport said no, Korean said goodbye, and they are now solely focused on SFO again. -This is all I can disclose.

Quoting BoeingGuy (Reply 10):
I'd bet on BA doing SJC-LHR.

Airport officials and I believe SJC mayor met with BA I believe this past July and from what I understand they met with several carriers in closed meetings at the last IATA meeting that was in Prague and I think Dubai. My money is also on BA or VS especially now that SJC also invested the 1.5M and put into service a full on commonuse airport lounge.

I totally agree with seahawk' here. The question asked was about the smallest airport. San Diego's airport is 661 acres and I would bet that without a doubt it is the SMALLEST airport in the US with nonstop service to Asia.

Now if wedgetail' meant some other measure of airport size, such as number of pax, or flights, or even city or metro area size) then we would need to re-think the question.

No question about it however; we in San Diego do have a tiny little one-runway airport (total area-wise.)

And I disagree. What would the size, as in acres ECT, have anything to do whether an airport has service to Asia? I interpret it as passenger count. This is how airports around the World are judged. Dallas is bigger in size than Atlanta but Atlanta is busier in passengers. SJC is the third busiest airport in the Bay Area after OAK and SFO.

I was talking from a number daily flights and number of pax per day. I believe SJC runs fewer pax through its airport than SAN.

OAK does not have any nonstop flights to Asia...yet.

Took off and turned left if that helps, otherwise I have not a clue.

I watched JA817A take off yesterday. It headed out over the bay for a while, made a left turn briefly...and then, made a right turn up the peninsula. I would imagine that the 787 would "merge" into SFO's typical Asian route.

There was still quite a bit of fanfare at SJC yesterday for the 2nd day of service. I was actually surprised to see how many passengers were deplaning and enplaning. The flights looked full. Not bad for a start. I hope SJC continues to be successful.

(And PDX had ~ 13M pax in 2011.) Also, as far as total commercial flight op's in 2011, SJC comes in at ~89K ops, SAN at ~159K, and PDX with ~184K flight op's. So again, SJC would be the smallest.

Again, I say hurray for the 787!

JA817A hasn't flown from NRT-SJC-NRT yet. Since the flights began on Jan 11th, JA813A operated the 11th, 13th and 14th; JA814A operated on the 12th.
