Ryanair: 4 New Bases To Be Announced This Week?

Mon Jan 14, 2013 1:30 pm

According to an article from an industry publication that I'm not permitted to mention on A.net - but it sounds like a girl's name - FR will start bases at Marrakesh and Fez. This is less than 6 months after a spat with the state airports company when that company stated: “Ryanair cannot accept cost increases as it seeks to deliver more growth to Morocco; ONDA has now lost sight of the key to the success of our partnership.” Aircraft are anticipated to be based there from April.

It is also anticipated that FR will announce Lisbon (which it presently does not serve) and Santander later this week. If these materialise FR will have 59 bases, with 57 across Europe and 2 in North Africa.

But, we shall see...

Do you have any idea about the routes which will be announced from LIS?

Concerning Portugal, this is a very important development. If confirmed, FR would become the first "Portuguese" airline in 2014 I guess, as it happens already in Spain, where it is the first "Spanish" airline. Concerning routes from LIS I should say STN, MAD, CRL, HHN (large Portuguese population in nearby Luxembourg), BCN. I don't know about OPO, but it is easy to understand that TAP Portugal could become the major victim of the move. Concerning Santander (Spain), I don't see it, I always thought that Santiago de Compostela (SCQ), where FR is already the first airline and which is very popular in Germany, France and Italy due to the religious tradition of St. Jame's Way, could be the next base, not the least because there are two terminals, one of them closed since a couple of years ago and degrading and with AENA (Spanish airport authority) willing to do something with it. BTW, AENA has a debt of around 14 billion (yes, 14 000 000 000) EUR.

Michael O'Leary is also giving a press conference next wednesday at Maastricht Aachen Airport. Possibly about expansion of their base at MST.

Quoting spantax (Reply 3):

Ryanair in Santander is obviously targeting (at least for international flights) Bilbao (1 hour away by car) which is one the wealthiest cities in Spain and, more importantly, one of the places that is suffering less the economic downturn in the country (they have the lowest unemployment rate by far, for instance). I also assume they get a good amount of traffic from Asturias and obviously Cantabria itself. Also Bilbao has been growing as a city-break destination.

SDR is the typical Ryanair paradise, the only two other companies operating are Iberia (MAD) and Vueling (BCN), so they can do whatever they want. SCQ has more companies, notably Easyjet.

My question is how? I flew out of MST this summer with Germanwings, and there were only two Ryanair flights (being summer I assume they would full). The pocket-sized terminal was completely packed.

I know this is only a rumor, by a Portuguese website is talking about the negotiations between Ryanair and Vinci, the new owners of ANA(Portuguese Airports).
FR could base up to 8 aircraft at LIS and open up to 42 routes.

Route map and source only in portuguese sorry:

And yet ... a new cheeky monkey foray attempt - it seems - onto Wizzair's undisputed territory: Transylvania Tirgu Mures - TGM (Central Romania). Could be a rowdy encounter on that little strip of concrete    Anyhow rumor has it that Ryanair will connect Pisa and Dublin to Tirgu Mures. A formal announcement /press conference is scheduled for Jan 16 2013 at Tirgu Mures.

Apparently, St Michael is to hold a press conference at Beauvais tomorrow, only the second he has held there.

BVA is FR's largest non base, with 39 routes.

So very soon we will see O'Leary disguised as Vlad Tepes (if he hasn't done it yet, wouldn't be surprised) saying something like "Ryanair will make Wizzair stop sucking your bloody money".

Ah, yes, I saw that rumour too - discussed on Pprune, mentioned on Anna, etc. But don't forget that if it does materialise there will be no route competition between FR and W6 given W6 doesn't serve DUB (from anywhere) and PSA from TGM, with W6 not serving PSA from nearby CLJ either. (W6 presently has only one route to PSA, from OTP.) So clearly FR would cleverly be operating brand-new routes with no direct competition, which obviously makes much sense.

Must agree, with a new route in Romania. Even though TGM isn´t the quite biggest airport, but it will do the trick. Crossing finger for O ´Leary..

He went to BVA to announce 3 new destinations: Rabat (as announced earlier today), Zadar and Carcassonne (which is already operating since mid-December)
Still no base for BVA!

It has also announced Tirgu Mures-Brussels/Charleroi and -Pisa, with Tirgu its second Romanian airport. Unsurprisingly given the thinness of the routes, neither are operated by W6, although it does fly Cluj Napoca-Brussels/Charleroi, with Cluj fairly nearby.

Oh don't worry about O'Leary, he'll do it as long as TGM hands out the "promo fee" regularly. Few years back ARW refused to comply with Ryan's golden rule and since than ... Wizzair 2/7 to Bergamo !

it's shocking from FR to open bases in Morocco, "outside EU" after a year pulling out of so many routes blaming Moroccan government for hiking up ground services fees, and now they came back, not only strong but with 2 bases, wow, wonder what happened behind closed doors, but we still want to see London better served from Morocco other than Marrakech, I bet a next candidate for FR will be Tetouan, a seasonal airport for Jetairfly but with a huge potential of high yield from Europe for Moroccans abroad.

Edited: still nothing available in their website for this new routes on when they start, all dates come back unavailable
