OAG Changes 1/18/2013: AA/DL/F9/NK/UA

Mon Jan 14, 2013 2:49 pm

INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares what is for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...It does NOT compare to last year or now (UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED).

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5 JAN 4>5 ; means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. No other months were changed. I only list one direction, although it is possible the listed change is only one way. It is too difficult to average the two directions. I assume the change is roundtrip and that is most often the case.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Non-daily operations create fractional weekly service. In most cases flights are rounded, but in the case of international service or markets with low frequency, fractions are shown. If a flight operated 5 days out of 7, it would show 0.8 flights.

WHY ARE THERE WEIRD FREQUENCIES IN FAR AWAY MONTHS FOR LCCs?
Most airlines publish schedules 11 months in advance. This report covers the next 9 months. That avoids seeing schedules as they are loaded. Several LCCs load their schedules less than 9 months into the future. Their schedules may also end mid-month. If B6 loads their schedule until Jan15, all flights in Janaury will show half frequency because of the way the report is created.

WHY IS A WHOLE AIRLINE'S SCHEDULE SHOWN AS CHANGING FOR A FUTURE MONTH?
Similarly to the previous question, some airlines load their schedule from nothing inside the 9 month window of this report. When their schedule is extended it will show as new service because there was no previous schedule to compare to. In some instances I will show a more valid comparison against another period.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE PINNACLE
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THE FREQUENCY DOESN'T SHOW A CHANGE, E.G. 4>4
This happens as a result of rounding. There is a change in service that is large enough to be listed, but through rounding it does not appear.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

Due to programming I need to do to update the database, next week's update will be very late. Probably late 1/26 or 1/27.

I hope this means Air Choice One will be operating under their own code, or a different "rented" code. I would hate to see them shut down - they are a great little airline.

This used to be 3x daily EMB's even the slow period, then went 2x daily CRJ, now it's only 2x EMB-120, IMHO, it looks like UAX/OO flying is going to end within the Northwest at some point in the near future, and these SFO flights will be all that will be left serving a handful of cities up here in the Northwest, those EMB-120 props are tired.

Next Flights: PDX-HNL-OGG-LIH-PDX On AS, WP & HA

That seems to be the trend, and depending on what happens with their new arrangement with VS they could be launching a fourth Trans-Atlantic route from EWR. Which would put their Trans-Atlantic network from EWR the size CO's was around 1992 when CO served LGW, ORY, FRA, MAD. The only difference is that CO was flying DC-10s and 747s, big difference in seats.

I smell an Italian economy in trouble, that cannot support EWR-FCO by any carrier, and the most economic and way to make any profit on the NYC-FCO connection is to serve via JFK. It will take an economic recovery to see EWR return IMHO. Market just isn't there at the moment.

Except DL out of EWR is restricted to just the hubs. I think they are interested in cherry picking the higher yield markets (CDG, AMS) and as said, likely eventually LHR.

UA can make it work fine, but with three alliances there is less and less head to head competition. The economy is just an excuse to do what is already coming.

With Easter being in March in 2013, would that have anything to do with cutting schedules to "sun" destinations in April this year?

With Easter being in March in 2013, would that have anything to do with cutting schedules to "sun" destinations in April this year?

That's a big part, but over the last few years we've seen these leisure markets completely collapse post-Easter in terms of schedule. It used to be that things were decent through third week of April and then people stayed home till school got out. It's also weird because a lot of kids are in school until mid June now and to not vacation from 3/31 to 6/15 is pretty crazy. Finally, it's odd because MAR and JUN/JUL have become such a super-peak that prices are crazy. It would make sense for people to go in April/May to save money.

I hope this means Air Choice One will be operating under their own code, or a different "rented" code. I would hate to see them shut down - they are a great little airline.

The airline was granted the EAS subsidy for BRL and DEC for another three years. Here is the article with more info about them getting the subsidy and new requirements for Air Choice.

um Italy is pretty bad and has much larger problems in its economy i think it is that much worse than France. Plus CDG is a much more important hub as other said so its a win win

Apart from the economic debate, the geography of CDG as a hub to service population centers is much better than FCO. FCO is essentially in the middle of the Mediterranean and the entire Southern rim has basically no traffic volume.

Thanks for the article. This means they will be flying under their own code from now on.

I flew Air Choice One in May, ORD-DEC-STL. Flying them was a lot of fun, and I'd encourage any ANetters in the Midwest who want to log a new airline and / or a new aircraft type to fly them, too.

With the big delays at FLL now due to the construction, some of the FLL reductions may be related.

NK has been in FLL for how long now? Its not like they showed up for a year or two and left. It's been their largest base of ops for quite some time. I don't follow your statement.

maybe but they are having a tough time in Latin America / Caribbean markets. It is much harder to be a web based airline, in markets that still thrive on cash over the counter.

It may take them longer, but eventually, FLL will become just another outside station in their network...same goes with DFW and LAS...they keep moving on to the next big thing.

Haven't we heard about how they are only shrinking in FLL because of construction enough? Why does it only affect them? I just give that zero credence any more. This is about the 10th time somebody has said that after they cutback. I was just pulling the data. NK's service is down 31% from a high in 2008, the other airlines are down 3%.

It deals with NK directly because that entire terminal, that they operate nearly all of their flights out of is being worked on for the next several years being completely overhauled... Closing gates, then adding four more, it will be a totally new terminal once complete.

IMHO, it looks like UAX/OO flying is going to end within the Northwest at some point in the near future, and these SFO flights will be all that will be left serving a handful of cities up here in the Northwest, those EMB-120 props are tired.

A big chunk of the OO intra-Northwest flying is at-risk and the economics probably won't work without the turboprops. Unfortunately, there's really not anything suitable to replace the EMB-120's and they simply won't last forever. And it's not so lucrative that it makes sense for a company the size of SKYW to move heaven & earth to keep that flying going.

However I agree they wont be moving the HQ soon... I do however think they may be increasingly vulnerable in FLL, where if an airline like B6 stepped up the competition NK may scale back on some routes.

Does anybody know if IB has gone 3x daily on this route before? I wonder if the AA flight will still operate...if so that would be 4x daily. That's a lot of capacity, especially considering the AA flight is the only one with a decent amount of connecting options ex JFK, the IB flights arrive pretty late.

I enjoy the thread every week Enilria, thanks for the hard work.

It's the same one everyone else uses for international arrivals, and they keep adding (B6 just added MDE for example).

Seems that the West Texas cities are doing okay for UA here, at least with these summertime additions into DEN.....

And just taking a quick count of UA U.S. hub flight changes this week , we have DEN with about +7, CLE +3, SFO +2, IAD and EWR even, ORD -1, LAX -2 and IAH with a -4. Is UA still punishing IAH?

And thank you for keeping this thread going into the new year.......

True it is not punishing IAH, just cutting more flights as things shift to other hubs. I believe you call the cuts "right sizing"..kind of like circumsicion...j/k

As for West Texas, definetly DEN works well for western and norhtwest connections. In the CO days everyone had to fly back to IAH, now they can head in the right direction, though IAH is normally a bigger local market than DEN, the connections work well. It would be nice to San Angelo SJT and ABI Abilene back on the map one day but doubtful; seems the UA crowd has to make the drive to MAF.

All those oil/shale destinations added to DEN really love the Wolfgang Puck Express at DIA; the last thing they want is a nonstop to the energy capital of the world. And many other things that make zero sense...maybe UA just like sharing revenue with DL over MSP!

These, plus the SFO increase, plus the half a dozen or so from last week, are still just add-backs of post-Christmas January schedule reductions, not y-o-y increases. It's all good news for CLE, though.

It will be interesting to see if UA "punishes" Chicago for asserting tax fraud in the manner they "punished" Houston for aiding WN. That action could further benefit DEN and CLE.
