Ethiopian And The 787

Wed Jan 16, 2013 1:07 am

Amid all the negative news coming out about the 787, ET comes out with a positive oress release about the plane.
"Ethiopian Airlines is pleased to announce that it has successfully integrated its four 787 Dreamliner aircraft in to its fleet with record length of non-stop flights and record high daily aircraft utilization in the industry. Since its first delivery in mid-August of last year, Ethiopian has logged 5,560 flight hours with average daily aircraft utilization of 14 hours.

"We are pleased with the performance of our Dreamliners. The Dreamliner is a highly capable and safe aircraft, which has enabled Ethiopian to enhance its service. The feedback from our passengers has been overwhelmingly positive and in some instances contributed to higher than expected passenger load factors on routes it has been deployed," said Tewolde Gebremariam, CEO of Ethiopian. "However, like any new technology aircraft entering into service, it is normal to encounter some minor bugs here and there, which are causing some technical delays in departures as extra time is needed to correct them", he added.

Not sure why the ET 787 has not been to IAD that much lately. The last few times I have seen ET they were back to their B777. Maybe they need more seats on the route. I thought they were waiting for more off the line before it went daily to IAD.

Well, someone is very happy with the 787. Let's hope this stays the same going forward.

The answer:

they need more seats on the route.

Capacity is the reason: 321 vs. 270 seats on the 787

The conversation I am hearing is that there is a positive correlation between the age of the 787 and the battery meltdown issues. Perhaps, ET's 788's are too new?

A.

Not true--the JAL that had the issue was #84--the highest line number delivered so far.

Touch wood, but it seems to me that ET is the one and only airline not to have had in-service issues with the 788.
Perhaps it likes the hot & high operating enviornment

I can confirm that the 787s are doing well at ET!
We were in Addis filming them for 4 weeks and they ran like clockwork... Filmed them to 7 countries and if anything they were early because of higher speeds than the airplanes they were replacing...
