I think it's to unveil a new livery and branding. Don't think they're ready to announce a merger just yet.

Good Grief I hope we find out about the merger. Working for US I'm gettin a little tired of waiting lol. Let's get it done or go back to what were doing now which is quite fine in my opinion.

I'm sure the new livery is a definate.
The New American is arriving.

Livery. One of the AA hangars at DFW have supposedly been on lock down, and I think it's the one with the 77W.

How many other anticipated "big announcements" are there going to be before there is even one actually announcement?

Frankly, I hope they announce a merger or come out against the merger just to put an end to it all.
It is what it is...

Livery! Livery! Livery! But if US gets in the way, how long would AA rebranding last? It'll be like UA/CO; one will retain the other's logo.

It has to be the new livery which will be painted on the first 77W that has been flying around in a dull grey paint base coat for a month.

Here is the latest from the DMN:

We’ve heard that strange happenings are going on this week at American Airlines’ hangar on the east side of Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport:

– The facility is pretty locked down, with security keeping out unauthorized employees.

– There are large generators located outside the building, like they need power for some big event.

– They allegedly are building a big stage inside the hangar.

I doubt this. If a merger would go through, I doubt AA would keep any aspect of the US branding, especially with them having just invested much time and money into a new rebranding themselves.

It will be the 77W in the new livery. The plane was parked at the north side of the hanger (old DL hanger) last week, now the area is a ghost town. I fly to ORD tomorrow out of A and back Friday into A. I'm sure to fly out on the east side of DFW and will watch.

Seems strange they would do the livery on a Friday, which is a day on which news that you normally want buried over the weekend is announced.

Whew! Now we can move on from mere 'speculation' and use the next 4 threads discussing what an incredible travesty the new livery is and which A.net designs the company SHOULD have gone with ...

(I'm personally quite excited I have to admit...I have NO attachment to AA's current livery)

So where is it being painted? At the AA hangar? Is the hangar equipped to apply aircraft paint? Where is the 77W now? In the hangar? And most importantly, how will I survive over the next 24 hours waiting for this announcement??

If a formal merger announcement comes after the new livery is unveiled, nothing of US will be incorporated in the new livery because AA is not going to unveil a new livery and shortly afterwards repaint all of their airplanes in something different.

I saw on FB that they were going to unveil a 738 in the new livery at 540am tomorrow morning in Seattle. Don't know if it's true, but it comes from what seems to be a reliable source.

I heard something similar, that it would be flown from Renton tomorrow at 0430, in preparation for an official unveiling at DFW either tomorrow or Friday.

Some believe that the new colors will be unveiled on the 773 (which I wanted to believe, but wouldn't mean that the a/c would have to be shuttled back to PDX or BFI for paint? DFW doesn't have any painting facilities, correct?

Folks lets not forget that the 3rd 77W for AA N719AN aka 7LC has not yet been delivered to AA. As far as I know is at PAE now after the initial painting at PDX. So this may be the first 77W that we see painted for AA.

REALLY?! Another *BIG ANNOUNCMENT*. Believe it when you see it folks; the gossip mongers on this site (and industry wide) continue to set set them selves up for disappointment!

ASK: why do it on a FRI (bad news is usually for Fridays), if there is a decent chance that the USAIR merger will happen why bother with the hoopla and expense, and finally, why do it now, and not at the end of BK?

Not saying it wont happen.

Regards,
Doubting Leery Thomas

Also, to folks in Fort Worth, please enjoy the consternation that you are causing the folks who don't have a clue. Cheers!

Because the 773 goes into service in two weeks and needs to be at least identified if not fully liveried.

It was spotted arriving PAE from the paint shop in PDX in the same grey as the first two. Unless there is a paint shop at PAE, it's not being finished there.

The current "American" titles and logos are applied (decals, iron-on or whatever), so that probably can be done in a non-painting hanger somewhere. The existing aircraft stripes are paint, so I don't know if the full livery can be applied or if .....gulp .... the new markings will be the boring billboard name-only on a grey version of the boring Euro-white that is so popular these days. Seeing the wedgie white tail extending into the fuselage in the same shape as the Qantas tail and the new Iberia look (currently in another thread) makes me very nervous about copying the theme.

I've no great attachment either, but I do like the present livery: simple, bold. Saw an old film clip this morning of a Delta take-off: 727 in the "old" Delta colors (pre-wavy colors, etc.).Miss it!

Well, I feel like this is going to be a new livery. Tom Horton sent out an internal memo, with the link below. Tom said inside the letter "Our company will start to look very different - both inside and out. We will be sharing more information about the look and feel very soon"

But who knows, the look and feel could be a merger. Who knows, I suppose no one on this forum does. I will now be looking forward to this press announcement.

I wonder if there is going to be a live stream for this; from what others have said AA is prepping for this heavily.

I don't know... that was sort of a question on my part. I thought I'd read others imply that before. Afterall, they do seem to send a bunch of planes from PAE to PDX on a regular basis. Or VCV, or any number of other places.

How long have the 777-300ERs been sitting on the ramp without any revenue flights?

Seems a bit odd on an airline's part to make payments for a plane and not do anything with it for so long.

No time. It's a single bay and it's been pretty busy painting 787s. I think it hasn't been empty more than two days in a row in quite a while. The current occupant went in barely a day after the previous left, and they were both 787.

Personally, I'm hoping for an announcement with fix time lines for their emergence from chpt.11, something like all ducks in a row planning completed, plan to be submitted to creditors / judge in the next two weeks with hoped for approval within 60 days and emergence in 4 months time.

Seems a bit odd on an airline's part to make payments for a plane and not do anything with it for so long.

Since it's new aircraft type for American, they've been doing all their proving duties, of which includes land evacuations and ditching exercises all under the watchful eye of the FAA. Among the other chores are making sure all the emergency equipment and placards are where they're supposed to be, along with many, many other tasks. It's a tedious process that takes a couple of weeks. AA finally received certification for the type last week, which is likely why we're seeing an uptick in activity, leading up to its first revenue flight on January 31.

It will be a great shame if they abandon the polished aluminum look.

It is such a part of their identity historically and looks really superb when maintained properly.

If AA and US are to be combined, it will be the acquisition of US by AA, after emerging.

I get the impression that it's a foregone conclusion. We've seen multiple frames painted grey and we know that the 787 will need to be painted as well. If the 77W's are grey, I can't imagine them going polished aluminum looking paint on the 787.

We already know this to be true. N717AN, N718AN and N719AN are clearly painted gray/silver with a white tail/empenage. AA's new livery takes into account the greater use of composites on the A319s/A321s coming later this year, and the all composite 787 coming next year. While they technically can be painted to look like chrome or polished aluminum, it apparently isn't practical. But don't worry, the Silver Bird will still grace the skies, just with silver paint.

It will be a great shame if they abandon the polished aluminum look.

It is such a part of their identity historically and looks really superb when maintained properly.

I agree. However the new aircraft coming, especially the 787, won't allow for the bare aluminum look to continue. So they have to do something. The Scanairs DC-10 and Reno MD's in white, the BAe-146 and original A300 in grey just were not nice enough to go back to.
