Southern Air Leases Ex-Jade 744ERF

Thu Jan 17, 2013 5:24 pm

I wonder if they are going to take more of the parked Jade Cargo fleet now that they have retired all 742Fs. So far their 744 fleet is from a mishmash of sources (a single 744ERF plus 3 BDSFs from 3 different airlines with two different engine types).

They are playing their cards. The hope is that a competitor who is having issues will fold, and put
them in a better position......

The jade 744's were parked in Shenzhen and Shanghai and haven't flown for just under 13 months - hopefully the damp humid maritime conditions didn't damage the aircraft.

The three Jade aircraft in China are owned by the Govt. The other three in the US are owned by leasing companies and I guess one of those went to Southern.

I thought they were partly owned by Shenzhen air rather than the government!

Anyway, maybe we have our own private AA livery on a ERF thread just here.

51% of Jade Cargo was owned by Shenzhen Airlines, not necessarily the airplanes. If the government would own them they would have transferred them to Air China Cargo I would suppose. They could replace older BCFs there if the capacity would have been too much.

In China the govt pretty much owns and/or controls many business assets that are not owned by foreigners. I am told a State owned asset is unlikely to be leased out and registered to a foreign entity outside China. Why they haven't put the Jade aircraft to use in China is unclear at this time - they may be tied up in red tape or lack of business.

I don't know if flight crews are part of this latest furlough but this can't be conducive to fleet fleet growth.

One thing for certain is Southern is still in Chapter 11 and though I have no first hand knowledge, must be fighting for its survival. They cannot stay in Chapter 11 forever and their operation must be able to generate cash plus will require exit financing to get out. Part of a restructuring unfortunately is laying-off some employees and have reduced some cost by replacing the 742Fs with 744Fs. I am intrigued by the article stating they have a plan to relocate certain operations. Does anyone know if they plan to leave Norwalk?

Looks like I just answered my own question. I looked at their website and appears they are moving to Cincinnati as all their open jobs are for there.

35 years of American Trans Air/ATA Airlines, 1973-2008. A great little airline that will not be soon forgotten.
