What Happened To The AA 757 Nc?

Sat Jan 19, 2013 3:16 pm

In two of the promotional videos for the new AA, we see a painted 757. What happened to it? Why hasn't it been rolled out?

Is it possible they painted it just to see it in the flesh as a test a few months ago, en painted it back to the old
D colors?

What gives?

Don't know.

The reg of N0427ZZ is not real and can't find the fleet number of 5SW either.

My guess would be that AA used CGI to "paint" a 757 just for this commercial, just like they did with the 77W.

The CGI in the rest of the video is very realistic, so I would expect that part of it was faked as well.

No, but the video shows N670AA with a greyed out "AA" before the start of the paint test. Was N670AA in storage at some point?

Wow, duped by CGI? Let me go look at again lol.

Rzjets says 670AA is retired, sent to storage at ROW October 2011.

I was going to say that airplane must have been in storage, because AA paints the red stripe blue when they retire an aircraft. That airplane had the red strip painted blue, and there would have been no reason to paint it blue prior to painting the entire aircraft. Same goes for the tail, the AA logo was painted gray (with the exception of the rudder), again, something not necessary to do it they're painting the whole thing anyway. So yes, that airplane had to have been in storage. At any rate, N670AA is not among the active fleet, even now.

I bet N670AA was in storage, they had it repainted, and now the interior/exterior is getting fitted out.

Remember in the initial video, Tom Horton said the whole fleet was getting in-seat IFE? I wonder if they would refit the international 75Ls? They're slated for replacement eventually, but they'll be a part of the new American during the most critical phase of the roll-out.

The 757s are beautiful, amazing airplanes - though they're among the most outdated on the interiors.

I bet the thing rolls out after the 737 tour next week into revenue service ex-MIA or NYC.

This is the same aircraft that they teased last month with the black tarp over the tail:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?list=UU...4&feature=player_detailpage#t=140s
(compare with http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...r_detailpage&v=J-KD0PdI1Ek#t=140s)

So they either have some of the best CGI I have ever seen or they repainted an aircraft they were retiring for testing/marketing (making these videos) reason than painted over it (or kept it very well hidden/quiet).

Well the registration of N0427ZZ isn't even a legitimately fake US reg number (too many numbers). They may have pulled an aircraft from storage just to do a test paint before pulling an active-service aircraft off the line only to repaint it a solid gray. The trick would be if it's possible to locate 670AA and see if it's still parked somewhere.
I'd take the awe of understanding over the awe of ignorance any day.

Ah, the 757 mystery continues. For what it's worth, On Dec. 30th I saw a 757 parked over at the AA hangars on the West side of DFW with its red stripe painted blue. Its tail appeared exactly like it did in the above video (gray with only the rudder showing part of the red 'A').

Also first character after the N must be a number other than zero.

Guess they must have flown it out.

And when you put it in FA, it shows not able to be tracked

Found this and it talks about the 773 getting painted at Dean Baldwin Painting in ROW, so maybe thats where the 757 was painted and the video was shot.

I wonder if they used a retired plane out in the desert to test different paint swatches, specifically the mica silver they ended up with. A year broiling in the desert is a good test for how the paint will hold up.

Comparing the colors of the 757 in the video to N908NN, you can see they're not the same.
There's an additional red stripe on the lower part of the fuselage on the 757. This part is grey on N908NN.
So that's probably the paint N908NN is getting now.

What is with the MD-80 with the three large circle on the forward fuselage that appears in the Youtube clip? And if they did painted a 757 to test the livery, how on earth did they keep that from getting out? I mean is it so easy to hide a Boeing 757?

No, it is not. It's very poorly made, actually.

It could have been acceptable in late 1990s or early 2000s, but not now. Whoever did that, forgot that wings flex upwards in flight.

Looking at the video, it seems they used the MD-80 referred to below to do that.

Looks like colour testing to me: http://youtu.be/J-KD0PdI1Ek?t=2m3s Seems to be at least 2 different shades of base mica silver, and 2 different shades of grey for the titles in each of the areas marked off by white vertical lines.

That thing is still over there??? Yeah, no, that's a bird that got hail-damaged pretty badly last year. I thought it had been there a while in July, just before I moved out west. Had no idea it was still parked over there. I don't think that wreck is our mystery bird here...

Keep it locked in the paint hangar I guess.

Yes looks like it.

I think Skywest had their CRJs painted in AE livery there, wonder if they will going back or left as is.

If it flew anywhere, it probably wouldn't have flown under its tail number but rather under an AAL ferry flight number.

Right but AA submits tail numbers to FA so they both should show up on a flight, like this one:

http://flightaware.com/live/flight/N795AN

N670AA looks out of the system.

Some still get missed like the 738 that got painted,

http://flightaware.com/live/flight/N908NN

still shows in VCV when we know it's in Dallas.
