DL SEA-HND. The Final Go-ahead?

Sun Jan 20, 2013 11:28 am

Things have been very quiet here in SEA in regards to our pending service to HND later this year. We have yet to receive the final go from Washington. I understand that opponents of the award by the Federal Govt were in session voicing their cases shortly after award was given to us. Is that still going on? Is UA, HA, AA making some ground in getting the DOT to overturn its award? Any ideas?

I don't think the DOT will overturn their decision and award HND service to another airline. Although the other airlines may still be working behind the scene to get them to change their mind I'm sure Delta will get final approval very soon for this route.

HAL is not challenging the decision. They made a good effort, weren't selected and will move on deploying that 332 in other areas they can make money.

How long did it take from having provisional approval to final approval last time DL got the LAX and DTW slots? If I recall correctly it was a month or two at the very least as well.

Let's not forget that demand for HND has been less than expected for most airlines. There's not much reason why DL can't load the SEA-HND flight into its schedules as airlines regularly put up flights that are still pending approval up for sale.

Next year HND should open up coveted daytime slots for US Traffic which means DL could operate to HND at prime time slots. In all likelihood, DL is quite happy to have the DOT drag its feet before getting final approval so that they can operate at the current sub-optimal times the least amount of time possible.

What is unclear to me is wether carriers with currently nighttime slots (AA, HA and DL) will get first dibs on the new daytime slots or if there will be a new contest to determine who gets these daytime slots.

What is counter-intuitive is that DL may have hard time getting at SEA for daytime departure to HND. Between 9am and 2pm, there's quite a bank of international flights that pretty much maximizes S-gate capacity.

Seems like this would be something that DL planners would have already visited in preparation for their proposal. If it was necessary to depart between 0900 and 1400, and all other requirements were in order, I would wager they could find a place to park a 767 for boarding.

Just my two cents.

They could always move one of their 757s to another gate during that time....

I think they still use A for some overflow.

We've been using the B concourse for overflow for the past several months during the midday push.

Ok sorry, B gates. I don't think they are Delta branded gates though.

not sure if they are CUTE or just gates no one is using. I thought it was the old Delta gates(pre--merger) but fairly sure they were on A

DL was at B for a long time, then moved to A somewhere around 2002-2003 when the rebuild of Concourse A was completed. Then they moved to S after the NW merger. As far as overflow, B is probably better due to the train connection from S (which is more convenient to the gates than the train stop near A).

DL has also had some midday overflow in the A gates, not as common as the B gates, but there have been some departures from A.
