Perhaps, although AA is turning over so much of its fleet, so relatively quickly, that AA should be able to catch up rather fast. Consider that within just a few years from today AA will probably have replaced most if not all of its MD80, 757 and 767-200ER fleets with new jets, all flying around with MCE, nose-to-tail AVOD IFE and wifi, and that AA will also have put into service several dozen new widebodies that also have nose-to-tail AVOD IFE and wifi. Not bad. By the time AA is done taking delivery of all of these hundreds of new 737s and A319s/A321s, the only jets left in the mainline fleet that won't have nose-to-tail AVOD will be the 767-300ERs and however many are left of the "original" 737s, and by then those two fleets together are probably going to comprise only around one quarter or less of the overall fleet.

Yes, but, IIRC, hasn't DL stopped installing domestic AVOD? And UA only has it on ex-CO aircraft. AA is going AVOD on it's entire mainline domestic fleet, as the only planes not being converted - MD80s, 762s and older 738s - phase out.

Still sad it took so long, but AA is more serious about making this fleet-wide than UA or DL.

The one thing I would really be currious is the transition of the current 737 fleet. The vast majority are only a few years old, and what the time line is to update those interiors. Time will tell. Exciting times at camp AA!

Well, we know the non-BSI 737s won't be getting the Sky Interior, as it cannot be entirely retrofitted, although apparently all 737s are getting the new flat panel displays and obviously they're all getting somewhat modified with MCE.

As for AVOD, I suspect AA will go the cheap route and simply keep the 737s that don't have it without it. It will definitely cause a product disconnect between the "old" and new 737s, but I wonder if AA is willing to pay the money to fix that disconnect. It would be nice for AA to bring all the old 737s up to the new standard - at least with regards to the AVOD and power ports. I guess we shall see.

Either way, I think AA's primary focus with the 737s now - as it should be - is getting the entire fleet, both old and new, standardized on the same configuration, as having four different configurations now causes operational and economic complexity that AA doesn't want to deal with.

The other factor that is no doubt weighing on the decision is of course that by the time AA gets done taking delivery of all these new 737s and A319s/A321s over the next nearly-decade, the oldest 737s will be approaching retirement age. Amazing, as I remember the day they went into service back in March 1999 - so crazy to think that was almost 14 years ago!

Has it been that long!? Wow, I remember being an googly eyed kid staring at the new 737s and 777s while transiting ORD back then.

Have there been any announcements regarding what will be done on the current 737s which do not have AVOD? Do we know for sure yet whether AA plans on adding AVOD to ALL 737s or only to new ones?

Well this is progress, and it means AA will no longer be doing what I think is the *Most Annoying Thing Airlines Do*, which is advertise products they do not have.

And it means they'll start doing the *Second Most Annoying Thing Airlines Do*, which is advertise products that almost none of their fleet has.

Why is this sad? They got a great deal on the a/c and are saving a ton compared to buying new a/c. They are used on relatively short domestic routes where the need for the extra bling isn't as strong.

Of course, you can always vote with your wallet and only fly on an airline which has nose to tail AVOD on the route you wish to fly. Scheduling might be tricky and you might pay a bit more but airlines such as Virgin America and Jet Blue I'm sure won't turn you down if you buy a ticket.

AA has said they have no plans of outfitting existing a/c with AVOD. Hopefully this will change. Now having said that, CEO Tom Horton said in the video introducing the new livery that there will be fleet wide AVOD, but in a later slide on aa.com/newamerican it says AVOD on all 'new' aircraft. There is a discrepancy here, and Tom's statement is the only contradiction I've heard to the original information that AVOD would exist on new delivery a/c only.

December was the last I heard, so if it is entering service within a month, that's news (great news!). Plus we have not received any updates to our manual for it. I guess we'll see!

What happens if/when AA and LCC merge. It's a well-known fact that Parker&Company aren't big fans of onboard amenities like AVOD...?

USAir isn't a true LCC. That being said, a merger would mean additional issues to sort out such as AVOD. I don't think an airline is competitive without some AVOD on long haul aircraft.

Maybe not so much. If those birds are deployed on flights from DFW to like MCI, IND, PIT, DEN, PHX, etc it won't be too bad. If they added say an Airshow map to those planes and keep up w/ the audio selections they have now (few may notice but AA compared to a lot has some good radio stations)...and maybe rotate a popular 30 minute show or documentary on those flights then IMO I think that would be a solid product for a flight of that length. But who knows! No one at these US airlines seems detailed oriented for little but cool deets (that don't cost extra) in the pax experience these days.

They could always do what QF is doing with IPAD's. That would allow for fleet wide AVOD without having to do all that much to the existing interiors.

Also, IIRC, the AA AVOD doesn't have a live television componenet. All pre-recorded.

Parker and company don't have their claws in AA just yet. Some of us hope that they never will. Anything that improves upon the AA product is welcome news, regardless of the bankruptcy outcome. Glad to see that AA is building a modern fleet with amenities that will help them compete effectively.

If you're on an American S80, 737, or 767-200 that has Gogo wifi, it also has the streaming video option. All of the movies/music content can be accessed via the Gogo homepage (for a fee). I use it often and it's very quick - they have an iOS app to use for it, too.

DL's new 739ERs will come with AVOD from the factory. Also, DL will soon be retrofitting the 753s with AVOD.

Also, while the ex-CO aircraft have PTVs, they are not AVOD, but the LiveTV system by JetBlue.

.....hmmm pretty big statement for someone who has no idea what Delta will spend capital on once the International fleet is done. (and this is also adding to the fact that they have been spending billions adding AVOD, nose to tail, to every single international wide body they have.....Don't think AA is doing that.....)

Remember that AA has been spiraling downward and went into bankruptcy in November of 2011. UA exited bankruptcy in 2006, and DL has also been out of bankruptcy for a few years. UA and DL had cost structures that permitted them to start putting AVOD into aircraft in the domestic fleet.

What this shows is that AA should have been less noble about restructuring and filed for bankruptcy in 2003, rather than try to cut costs without the benefit fo the bankruptcy code.

Pretty sure AA is doing that. While details - including whether or not there will be AVOD in coach - have not been announced, the entire widebody fleet sans the older (i.e. going to be parked) 763s are getting new interiors starting in January 2014.

Fact remains, like I said, neither DL or UA have plans to go domestic fleet-wide with PTVs.

The question is whether or not existing a/c will get AVOD, and so far AA says no. The 772, when reconfigured, will get the new seats with larger, 9" screens, like the 77W in coach.

And Delta will be done with its widebody fleet, adding 100 new domestic aircraft with AVOD and have all the capex room from the international moods to do something with the domestic fleet. (if they wanted) (along with 16 757s getting mods.)
