Pakistan International's ORD Route

Sun Jan 27, 2013 9:05 am

I know not too many folks on here have first hand knowledge of PIA in terms of working there.

I noticed on their website they fly to JFK from Lahore via MAN. But nonstop back to Lahore from JFK. How can one stop make the flight more secure back to JFK, even though it originates in Pakistan? I have heard the nonstop eastbound and one stop westbound is due to security concerns from Pakistan's side. It seems a bit odd to have the one stop in one direction. Do they actually take on pax at MAN? Why would anyone take the flight if there is no return flight? Or is it just a tech stop?

I noticed on PIA's website that they will return to ORD, this time via BCN. Will it be one stop one direction and nonstop back? Again, how many will take advantage of a one way flight on PIA from BCN to ORD?

I saw PIA in ORD a couple years ago, I heard they left ORD. It looks like they're coming back.

Their USA routes seem like an odd setup. I had a friend that took PIA from the USA to Europe, about 15 or so years ago, but it wasn''t to MAN. Maybe they went to Pakistan back in those days via ZUR or GVA, as I think that's where she was going.

The US forbids direct flights from Pakistan due to security concerns, that is why the airline touches down in the UK and all passengers are checked again

This is discussed here already at PIA Routes Rumor / Update

This makes no sense at all. So the USA assumes the security in Pakistan is sub standard so they want the passengers to be checked in England again. But what if the passengers bring forbidden items through the "sub standard" security in Pakistan and take them on the plane, then get checked again in Manchester but leave the questionable items on the plane? Even if they have to take all their hand luggage with them, there have to be so many places on an airliner to hide something during a layover, like below the seats where the life vests are. I can't imagine the authorities can search the whole cabin every time.

So I conclude that the requirement to stop in Manchester has no practical purpose.

Presumably the plane itself is also given a quick lookoever and anything suspicious is immediately flagged?

Usually in case of a transit-security check, the ohd bins, toilets and seat pockets are checked. I have no idea if in this case the bagage/cargo will be re-screened as well.

In my eyes it has no sense either, but that is what the US wants...

Yes, all bagage/cargo are re-screened either

Read my post above. There are many more hiding places on an airliner that can't possibly be checked at a transit stop, like under the seats where the life vests are.

I had the pleasure of taking PK to BCN the last time they operated to ORD. Yes, they do have traffic rights and overall it was a nice experience. If I'm not mistaken it was MAN they operated through the first time they tried ORD.

Although it's not listed yet on their website and from what I have on file. Their plan is to operate like before on Wednesday and Saturdays via BCN arriving into ORD at 1355 and departing at 1945.

PK will transfer the 3-weekly KHI-LHE-JFK/LHE-JFK transit stop from MAN to SNN for Summer 2013. This will give passengers the added convenience of preclearing immigration and customs at SNN, arriving at JFK as domestic passengers. The return JFK-LHE-KHI/JFK-LHE flights will be nonstop as per the current setup.

So, basically, is it safe to assume that the flights to MAN carried relatively few passengers for MAN and more for JFK? Seems to me that there would definitely be some opportunity between SNN and JFK for tourists, as that is already fairly popular in the Summer, but to my knowledge, PK is not available in the GDS, which would definitely limit sales (who would go to the PK website to buy a ticket to Ireland unless you're an a.netter)?

Does anybody know if PK would hire a ground handler in ORD to handle their flights or hire staff directly?

I don't think PK sell local MAN-JFK flights, do they? If they do I can't imagine it being too popular as there are no return flights (JFK-LHE operates nonstop).

Here is the PK tender request for SNN ground ops:

They'll probably contract out for both pax and ground services. They do have a sales office in Oakbrook, IL and probably will operate as management like before.

Does anyone know what the routing of the ORD flights will be? I.e. will they serve ISB, KHI, LHE or all in one?

Actually if you look at the clip fca767 posted, you will notice a bag being loaded at MAN. So, yes, the can sell MAN-JFK, and the price is often reasonable.

That could also have been going to back to Pakistan... At any rate, I think all bags are offloaded and screened during the JFK transit anyway.

They sell MAN-LHE and currently operate in both directions.
