OLT Express To Cease Operations At 27JAN13 2400hrs

Sun Jan 27, 2013 9:07 pm

OLT Express has just put out a press release in Germany that they will cease ops at midnight tonight after the owner, Dutch company Panta Holdings, has withdrawn support and not agreed with a rescue plan submitted by the OLT's executives. Nothing on the airline's website yet, but flights are beginning to get cancelled across the network for tomorrow morning.

Remaining routes that will be affected:

Hamburg - Dresden
Hamburg - Karlsruhe/Baden
Munich - Saarbrücken
Munich - Münster/Osnabrück
Zurich - Bremen
Zurich - Dresen
Bremen - Copenhagen
Bremen - Toulouse

So, all parties involved loose ... ( staff/share holders/affected airports/passengers)

I hope at least some of the now vacant routes may be taken over by other carriers.
Thinking about FKB-HAM where Intersky had tickets on sale already but cancelled the plan to enter the route when OLT decided to go head-on with them. (wise decision by Intersky´s management not to waste money in a battle).
So, I hope Intersky may return now as the route is profitable with the right equipment/frequencies.

All those (except MUC-FMO) were monopoly routes. Do you think they will be taken over by Lufthansa Cityline or Eurowings?

Sad to see that they couldn't keed the company going. I hope the employees are able to find a job fast. How is employees protected in Germany if the company goes bankrupt?

Do you happen to know the loads for FKB-HAM?

Those were not only monopoly routes, but routes that other, more established and financially stable airlines have left for good reason in the past - or other more shaky airlines have gone bancrupt over serving the routes. So why should Lufthansa be interested in serving these routes?

SCN-MUC: served by Luxair and airberlin
FMO-MUC: served by dba and later airberlin
DRS-ZRH: served by Crossair and Cirrus
DRS-HAM: served by Lufthansa, Hamburg Airlines and Cirrus
BRE-ZRH: served by Crossair
BRE-CPH: served by Muk Air, SAS/Cimber

The only route that realistically has a chance of survival is FKB-HAM. Some hope maybe for ZRH-DRS/BRE if Swiss is remotely interested in the feed from there - although they vacated the routes for good reason a couple of years ago.

Decked like the rest of the operation.

Swiss will have to make alternative arrangements and fly with own , Swiss European or Helvetic one presumes.

Helvetic will fly some additional flights for Swiss. DRS-ZRH/HAM were certainly not the reason why Cirrus went out of business and BRE-ZRH/TLS were not the reason why OLT went out of business. These are routes that have potential. I would also assume FKB-HAM to be taken over by another carrier. Probably not much hope for BRE-CPH, MUC-FMO (with another 2nd carrier after LH as historically the case) and MUC-SCN.

Some of the routes were interesting p2p routes... the F100 a good aircraft, no competition, attractive schedules, I wonder what their cost base looked like.

However, it was a too fast expansion with absolutely zero route marketing - most people in the destinations had no awareness of the new routes or the brand. You cannot book an airline or route you don't know exists. The initial split of routes between 2 ticket distribution systems did not help either. I think there would have been potential for the airline with a) a slower more gradual expansion b) better route marketing, or actually just any route marketing.

According to ch-aviation, Intersky will take over the FKB-HAM service starting early march. The route will be served up to four time daily with an ATR leased from Avanti Air.

You´re right.
Initially I was expecting an ATR-42 but it´s going to be an ATR-72. Operated by Avanti Air ! since Intersky has no availlable aircraft to open up a new route at the moment.
The originally planned Intersky aircraft (Dash 8-Q300) for FKB-HAM is now used for new routes ex GRZ.
So, Intersky had to look for an interim solution if they want to make a second attempt.

OLT has officially filed for bankrupcty (in German):

http://www.airliners.de/wirtschaft/k...press-stellt-insolvenzantrag/28914

SCN is needless to say worried about the loss of connections and jobs, as well as a further hit to the viability of the airport.

DRS also wants to keep flights to HAM & ZRH.

Don't forget also BRE-TLS which OLT was flying to transport Airbus employees (and surely making lots of money out of) which is up for grabbing now.

Does anybody know what's going to replace the STR-ZRH flights for Swiss? I'm booked on one of those in may. At this point, the Swiss web site still says "OLT Fokker 100" but I guess this is going to change to something else?

At the moment Swiss replaces the Fokker´s with A 319 or ARJ.

It seems they'll return to Mass lease(also part of the Panta holding like Denim, Rekkof, etc).

For many years in succession the F100´s are finding a new home rather quickly anyway.

Wait a minute... so basically we are saying that Panta bought OLT with the only intention of shutting it down and getting a hold of its F100's to lease them? That would explain everything actually, and in particular why Panta is rejecting the restructuring plan proposed by the airline management and insisting on a shutdown as the only solution...

no, of course Panta prefered to see their F100s fly and make a profit at OLT. OLTs expansion was a disaster, as written above, loss making as there was unsufficient promotion and brand recognition needed to fill up stand alone O-D services. The restructuring plan didn't proove that OLTs operation would be financing the lease and operation costs in the future. What would you do if you were Panta and have a choice to keep on throwing money away or make some money elsewhere?
By the way I like OLT a lot, flew lovely flights on their Metro, Saab 2000 in 2003 and Emden-Borkum last summer. The OFD Islands services seem safe and continue, I hope they won't be affected in the longer term.

Completely independent company from OLT Express. When OLT Express was sold, the old OLT was splitt up into OFD (remaining with AG Ems as shareholder) and into OLT Express, sold to short-lived Amber Holdings and further on to Panta.

It seems that BMI regional will happily be taking over the OLT BRE-TLS flight which was mainly there to transport Airbus employees (and I assume very profitably), despite previous rumors that Germania (who flies XFW-TLS for Airbus) would take over.
