More New American Cabin Pics

Wed Jan 30, 2013 10:56 pm

Dallas Morning News has some additional cabin pics of AA's new 777-300ER including the business class and main cabin.
http://aviationblog.dallasnews.com/2...-american-airlines-777-300er.html/

Anyone find any photos of the 738 with AVOD that was supposedly delivered recently?

It looks great! Amazing improvement from previous cabins. AA's new business class looks pretty much like BA's and CX's business classes.

The first and business class products are very good. The business class is the same that CX uses. I’m not surprised that they avoided showing the 10 abreast economy section.

The first class is marginally improved. The business is the same seat as CX, but wildly different from BA.

I like more the Business Class fabric. The F class looks a bit outdated.

I mentioned it in another thread, but AA is not scheduled to take delivery of any AVOD-equipped 738's until Q4 of this year.

wow, how the tide's have turned. Qatar Airways, a Middle Eastern airline has given up its first class and American has added one, never thought I'd see the day.

The Business class looks identical to CX. And QRs is not too far off, but I think QRs looks a loot roomier and a lot better IMHO. I wonder if there's a case of oneworld negotiating together with companies for interiors, it might be a good cost saving strategy in addition to harmonizing the product across the board.

AA has always had an international first class, but they are cutting back on it significantly. All their 772ERs (which are currently 3 class) are being reconfigured to 2 classes (their 763s are already 2 class only).

When does this aircraft officially enter service? I keep thinking it's already happened, but they seem to be dragging their feet.

This arrangement makes me wonder: do people never travel together in business class? The cabin is 100% configured for single travellers... it would be rather awkward to use if you travel with a partner or as a group. Perhaps that's the target market, but it still surprises me.

Coach on a 773 can't be as bad as the tiny seats on the Embrears. But seriously, how is flying on an AA 737, 757, or MD-80 any different from a DL 737, 757, or MD-88?

By the same token, I remember when DC-10s and L-1011s were 2-4-2 in the days of regulation. By 1990, AA, UA, DL, NW, TW, etc had all gone to 2-5-2, and they were using DC-10-30s and L-1011-500s on trans-Atlantic routes. Not to mention that 747s had gone from 3-4-2 to 3-4-3 in coach.

ckfred,

The difference is you aren't sitting on an MD-80 for 16 hours nonstop. Emirates did their best to keep me out of coach while doing a story for them on their 777.... I was told every excuse as to why I couldn't go back into Economy and try it out and talk with customers, yet had free reign on First Class & Business. Same on the A380. The moment I started playing around in economy once we landed in JFK, the purser did her best to push me out of the plane. I think AA is doing the same thing with the media.

And yes, the seats ARE that bad. They're a bit thinner than the seats on the 757. Airlines have already done a good job of masking the 16.9" wide seats on the 787, but you'll never see me on it.

ETOPS - considering you work for US, aren't you being a bit presumptuous here.... while a merger is probably going to happen, its not there yet. Plus, weren't you with us when they reconfigured our awesome A330s back in 2006?? I swear you were all swearing up and down how they are making the A330s the most uncomfortable plane when they added rows to it. I seem to recall some threads on USAviation....

And when Delta switch to 10-abreast on its 772s (which it will), then what? 10 abreast is the new normal. People need to get used to it. I don't like it either, but it helps keeps air travel affordable.

From the perspective of never having flown business/first before I'd love to give it a try. Looks like a great product but the color schemes remind me of bank/financial office conference rooms, very sterile and no color or creativity. That seems to be a trend on most American and European carriers from what I've seen.

With the prices for F & J I'll stick to coach until I can figure out this whole frequent flier business

Mark, I strongly believe in the power of social media. If enough people make a stink about it, then hopefully others won't follow.

I only sat in the EK 777W Economy seat for a few minutes, and at first, it felt comfy. Then when you start moving around, and realizing the size of the seat, I realized how uncomfortable it will be for the person next to me. Even cabin pics of ANZ, EK, and AF show some fairly miserable people in Y.

Yet airlines are selling legroom when some of us would rather pay for width. First Class is NO longer just a wider seat, its now a freaking space bed with iShower and iBar.

The First class cabin looks fine until you compare it against that of alliance partners BA, CX, JL, QF and competitors AF, LH, NH, SQ, EK et al (in a long-haul environment). It really looks quite dated and the amount of space allotted to each passenger at the front of the bus doesn't look particularly generous.

I believe in it too, but it's not going to happen. People aren't going to be willing to pay a premium to fly 9-abreast in coach to make up for the lost revenue/competitive advantage that 10-abreast airlines will have.

Admitedly I've never been in 10-abreast Y, but isn't that seat about as wide as a standard 757 seat?

I cannot answer that question, but I've recently been on a AF 777 coach (10 abreast) on a 13+ hours flight from BKK to CDG, and I must admit that this configuration is just awful... I'd like to give a try on a 9 abreast 777 config to see if there's any difference... But my ass still reminds this horrible ride...!

Last note: I love the huge screen on the walkaround bar/galley! Nice idea!

I'm really not a fan of 10-abreast. I know it keeps costs down, but I'd pay a premium to fly 9-abreast. Depending on the difference in cost, 10-abreast may be AA's way of getting people to buy up into Y+ for the extra legroom and roomier configuration.

Y flying is already uncomfortable enough. Why make it more so?

To weigh in the 10 abreast 777 thing -- I've done it numerous times on EK (including 4 14 hour hops) and am quite broad (but average size otherwise). I'm also quite tall and find it far more comfortable to sit in a narrower seat with more pitch than a wider seat with less pitch.

That said, a narrower seat with the same pitch as a wider seat sounds bad. I think airlines should compensate for a 10 abreast layout by offering 32-33" pitch throughout -- most passengers will probably judge the seat to be far more spacious than usual, and the airline can still fit more seats in than usual (ie remove 1 row but add an extra seat on the remaining 20 rows).

Quoting usxguy (Reply 17):
Same on the A380

This proves to me that it has nothing to do with the 77W being 10-abreast and everything to do with the airline wishing to promote its premium cabins. They are hardly the only ones doing this -- airlines always promote their premium cabins because that is where the consumer are more likely to base a decision on the product rather thn just price/convenience.

I'd be willing to bet that virtually every airline on the planet will encourage a reporter to spend as much time as possible in F/J rather than Y, even if they offered 34" of pitch and a 2-4-2 config on a 777.

Quoting KaiTak747 (Reply 25):

The have been whispers that QF is looking a range of new seats for their A333 fleet, so we could potentially see them move away from the existing Skybed in the next couple of years too. A reverse herringbone seat would not surprise me.

That might raise awareness, but the airline is going to make its decisions based on actual revenues. If they see customers leaving their service because they don't like the seats, then they'll react. But basing it just off social media...well, if social media was so strong, shouldn't Joseph Kony be caught by now?

I've wondered the same - seems to be in fashion now to have business cabins like this. I guess the idea is to keep things quiet, and try to give business class travelers a respite while flying rather than giving them a place where they can continue to do business. But a lot of companies would consider it a waste of time to fly business class and not do any work - they're not paying for people to take a 14 hour vacation. Someone mentioned that the seats are angled towards the middle, but they're still too far apart to really talk without shouting. If you want to talk in any airplane without being audible to everyone around you, you really have to be right next to the other person's ear.

I understand it's kind of a damned if you do, damned if you don't thing for the airlines, because you'll never please everyone. Some people want quiet, some want to talk business. I think the next generation of business class is going to have to have some sort of reconfigurable seat - I'm picturing something where you could just slide the seats from side to side a limited amount, and have the table on either side, or even bridged between the two middle seats.

Just stepped out of the airplane with my friend Scott whom I thank for saving my spot on the line. Hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. It looks fantastic!!!! It almost feels like a different airline in there. Its gonna take a while to warm up to non blue seats, as they are sort of brown with specs of blue and red. The lavs in FC and BC are very nice. Square over the counter sinks, color in the walls. FC looks tiny compared with the -200. But its very, very nice. BC is really different. Cant wait for the -200 to be reconfigured. The business class center seats dont have a divider. But once you lay back your seat completely down you cannot see your flying partner nor their monitor. Monitors in BC are very big compared to what we have now. The stand up bar is very elegant and the ceiling treatment is very nice. Lighting is very cool. Big closet in FC and the stairs to go up to the pilots quarters are surprisingly wide. There is a small compartment they can access up in their room that can be served from downstairs so we dont have to go up or they have to come down to get their drinks... I dont think it fits much though. There are enough jacks in those FC and BC seats to hook up enough electronics. There are plugs there I have no idea what plugs into them. One thing I thought was great. The main cabin extra section on the airplane is isolated behing BC. There is actually a partition between MC extra and BC to the front snd MC bebind it. It really gives the plane a feeling of having 4 separate classes. It is gonna be great seating in that section. And to my total surprise, coach looks sooo much less crowded than on the -200. I thought it was gonna be horribly tight and it is not the case at all. Of course, Ill let you know after an 8+ hour in coach how tight it really is. Bathrooms in MC are the same as on the -200. Galleys look big, with BC being the exemption. Its a BIG cabin, lets see how that goes. Cork screw is in the BC galley instead of in FC as on the -200. All in all, I was pleasently surprised. And it really is the Flagship of out fleet. I hope passengers enjoy this new adition to the fleet.

10-abreast Y is one of the reasons why nearly everyone I know tends to choose alternatives to JJ's GRU-MIA route. Same with GIG-MIA I believe. The A332's offer wider seats and the same legroom. Of course, if you're flying J or F (which I sadly can't afford), the trip on the 77W must be wonderful. I like AA's new design, but I wouldn't want to be in a DFW-GRU flight in that Y class.
