Strange AA 757 With Markings Covered At BOS

Fri Feb 01, 2013 9:58 pm

Just saw a strange AA 757 land at BOS on 33L and taxi to a Terminal E gate. The plane was clearly in the AA livery (old one) but the American title at the front and the AA logo on the tail were poorly covered up.

According to FlightAware this was N648AA from ROW.

What's the deal with this plane?

I would guess that it is a delivery flight to a European or Asian customer with a stopover at BOS. Can anyone with information elaborate?

Next stop is KEF. Didn't FI just pick up some extra 757s? KEF could also be a fuel stop, of course.

AA has not used 648 since January 2012 when it was put in storage.

Your link shows its headed to Keflavik, so looks like US Bank has found it a new home.

It was a tech stop enroute to KEF. Icelandair was operating the ferry flight but under the N-number I suppose until paperwork goes through at Iceland.

I haven't seen many AA B757s at LAX as I used to lately- would this be part of a larger fleet drawdown, or have they just moved them to elsewhere in their network?

It's probably the result of several 757 retirements, coupled with the influx of 738s capable of doing 757 missions that the MD80 wasn't capable of, e.g. transcon. It could be your imagination as well, AA has gotten rid of a handful of 757s, but nothing large scale.

Just out of curiosity, why the need to taxi to a gate if no passengers are on board? Are there no other places to refuel and change crew?

Well yes, it is partially a coincidence of when I've been visiting LAX, but I was wondering if there had been any schedule changes in general that could also result in fewer 757 flights there.

None that I know of. There may be one or two seasonal Hawaii flights that could account for a difference, but probably not enough to notice.

This aircraft appears to be a 757 that American Airlines rejected the lease on last year along with about another dozen or so 757s that American rejected the leases on while in bankruptcy.

I presume it will get interior renovation, and of course a livery change. Does Icelandair have the facilities to do that? If not, where will they get it done?

The fuel hydrants are set up for fueling aircraft at the gate. Depending on the fuel agreement.

Hard stands at KBOS do not have access to fuel pits for hydrant fueling. Only gates. Hydrant fueling is faster than fueling from a truck.

Hello All!

I was doing operations for this flight. Fuel stop midpoint ROW-BOS-KEF as you have all already seen and pointed out. Was on the ground at gate E8A for about an hour or so while we got the crew some pizza

To be registered TF-ISK, and should be ready and configured by approximately April or May. Will be used only for Europe flights as it is a non-ETOPS aircraft.

Will be painted in 1 or 2 months in NWI.

Cheers!

Just curious. Is this non-ETOPS status due to non-ETOPS maintenance standards or a technical reason for this frame?
And if is due to maintenance standards how long does it take to become an ETOPS aircraft?

LAX has approx 85 mainline departures perday with approx 25 being the 757 variant. Thats a pretty big chunk of the operation. I've seen more 757s on DFW-LAX lately than in the past. It used to be S80s but there are only 5 S80 departures these days. The 738 is filling that role now with 35 or so departures.

No, those have been gone for many years.

This airplane was never set up for ETOPS flights. It doesn't not have a Hydraulic Motor Generator, or Dual Fuel Cross Feed Valves and various other systems and requirements for ETOPS operations.

If it's just a ferry flight, why do they need to rush the fueling?

The handler preferred a gate and one was available so the Port Authority accommodated them.

I had requested a gate for faster fueling as there was a forecast for some severe winds and weather closing in to Iceland in the early morning Saturday. Wanted to get the aircraft out of there as quickly as possible, and we were able to use a gate since it was available and not being used.

Could be right, could be wrong. My company systems say the new aircraft will be TF-ISF and TF-ISK, along with TF-ISL which we acquired last summer
