Will UAs CDG-SFO Flight Suffer Weight Restrictions

Sat Feb 02, 2013 10:12 pm

Because of a schedule change on my CDG-IAD-DFW flight, I had it changed to CDG-SFO-DFW. UA will be flying the 767-300ER and do to the length and winds, will it suffer weight restrictions on the westbound CDG-SFO leg? Will they block some Economy seats from being booked?

Thanks for your insights on this flight.

In the early 90s UA had a mini-hub at CDG from where they flew to SFO, among other places. The flights were on a 767-300ER. I took that flight a number of times, and I don't remember any weight issues or blocked seats.

UA flew 763's from CDG to SFO for many years without needing weight restrictions. I doubt they will need them now, especially with winglets.

I believe CDG-SFO is supposed to be operated by the refurbished Ghetto Birds, so it is possible that the increased density over the 3-class 763s that UA formerly used might cause a weight restriction. There is probably not much cargo on that route so that will help a little.

Hasn't UA operated LAX-CDG on the same aircraft but without winglets in the past?

I doubt there will be issues with weight restrictions - especially in the summer if that is when you are traveling.

United has the flight blocked at 11:55 - which shouldn't put the aircraft too close to the margin. Consider that Delta's LOS-ATL 767-300 flight is blocked at 13:40 in the winter (though I am assuming that flight is usually significantly weight restricted).

United did operate UA961 - the old CDG-SFO flight in the 1990s - with the 3-class 767-322ERs before the 777-200ERs came online and took over. Granted, the two-class aircraft are PW4056 powered, and thus have a slightly lower thrust rating than the 3-class airplanes. But the winglets should help a bit with that.

If we at AZ could operate a nonstop 767-300ER from SFO-MXP without any weight restrictions year round, then UA should be able to pull it off. Of course, our aircraft was two class 30J/174Y, so 204 seats, but in the 26 months we ran the aircraft to/from SFO, we never once had to stop for technical reasons (e.g. fuel).

If UA has a lower density 763 with winglets and CDG-SFO is about 300nm shorter than MXP-SFO, it should be pretty easy to pull off, especially in summer.
