My favorites are Pan Am's Clipper and TWA's Ambassador. They bring to mind images of Pan American Airways when she was the most prestigous airline the world over, and when TWA was a dominant international airline, before Icahn.

Some ATC use "T-Way" for TWA. I know they do up in the tower at ORD.

"Waterki" is indeed the callsign of TSA which operates as Delta Connection and TWConnection at JFK, US Airways Express at PIT and TWExpress at STL.

I checked the INTAG book. TWA does not called "Ambassador".
The book shows TWA is call sign: TWA. Someone posted mentioned calling "T-Way". I think Ambassador is calling for first class frequent flyers. It might be confuse name it.

Thanks,

When United Express first started flying in the Pacific Northwest, they used Sundancer. I always enjoy hearing ATC telling Speedbird when to turn.

Big777jet, I'm sorry I didn't comprehend what you wrote. I understand that the present TW callsign is indeed "TWA", but what did you say about "Ambassador" and "T-Way" ?

Incidentally, please try and write legibly:

"I think Ambassador is calling for first class frequent flyers. It might be confuse name it"

what does this mean??

I think the reason why British Airways uses the callsign "Speedbird" is simple: that was the old callsign of British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC).

BOAC got "Speedbird" because its famous logo reminded people of a speeding bird.

I think the reasons why America West uses the "Cactus" callsign was to avoid confusion with American Airlines (and also refer to the fact HP is based in Phoenix); the "new" National Airlines uses "Red Rock" to avoid confusion with the "old" National Airlines and also because it referred to Red Rock Canyon State Park west of Las Vegas (after all, National is based at LAS).

OK- I am hard of hearing not foreign. I have a difficult make perfect grammar. I thought you were understand clearly. I asked my friend and explained about this.

Here is what I am saying is.

When the airlines TWA is contacting the tower and pilots. They use TWA not Ambassador as their call sign. Ambassador means first class passengers only.

I found the book and it says call sign: TWA. None of Ambassador is showing. Get it?
Hope you get it clearly.

Please be patient with me. I love aviation but I'm deaf anyway! God bless you all.

I have to agree with Big777jet. I would figure someone who apparantly likes TWA would know that their frequent flyer/first class lounges are called The Ambassador's Club. I don't know if they call the TWA First Class cabin Ambassador, but I understood perfectly what he Big777jet meant the first time. Please get off your high horse just because everyone can't speak English as well as you, whether it is native, or not!

Hello,
This might be silly, but, what is the call sign?

I know these names, but who use them, and why are they used?

Thanx...

Thank you LH423 for your accept. I am not fans of TWA. I haven't flown TWA over 20 years. I flown only RT DAY-LGA on B727-100 back in 1974. I just wanted to make sure the call sign is correct. I know it is impossible calling Ambassador. I saw the TV news and newspaper when TWA hijacked Beruit or almost crashed over Detriot. The pilot was talking to ATC "TWA flt #" etc.... Also, TWA Flt #800 over Long Island was talked to ATC. ATC said to TWA. "TWA 800 climbed to 13,000 feet clearance" the last statement before blew it up. They did not say Ambassador flight 800. I never heard of it. I don't know why everyone is calling Ambassador.

To a previous poster, when did Air Jamaica change it's callsign to "lovebird" ? I thought "Khaki Blue" (Air South) and "Stinger Bee" (Eastwind) were pretty original. "Apple" (New York Air) and "Dolphin" (AvAtlantic) were also fairly clever.
My definition of cool ? Not trying so hard to be cool.

Being a bit out of the loop, I wonder if Canadian used Empress as well after all those mergers? And what is Air Canada's sign?. (180 Days?)

Ok, I had no idea Mr. Big777jet was hard of hearing or handicapped in any way because..........well because I'm not psychic. I assumed he wasn't foreign because it very clearly says in his profile "United States"

Airsicknessbag, (you think you deserve any respect with a handle like that, you child), I meant no mistreatment to Mr. Big777jet. In my first post I politely apologized and asked him to restate. As far as foreign language, not only do I speak several well, but de mi punto de vista, sos un imbecil.

LH, I know that TWA's lounges are called Ambassador Lounges and that many years ago, indeed TW's first class was TWA Royal Ambassador, now Trans World One. So you, too, can "get off your high horse" and stop being so arrogant.

Mr, Big777jet, I meant no disrespect as I did not have any knowledge of your hearing difficulties. Please accept my apologies.

Regards,
Russell

This story I heard from a friend who worked at now defunct Arizona Airways...A pilot who swore by pleasing a woman sexually by ministering oral sex to her a**hole and likened it to sucking on a penny. His callsign was Copperbottom.
