Strange that KLM uses its KLM Asia brand to serve TPE. That would suggest there are still some prickly issues surrounding flights to the "two Chinas."
I would suggest that someone who is either Chinese (justinlee), or is living in China (myself) is better placed to comment.
Truly, there have been massive increases in direct "cross-straits" flights in recent years, unthinkable five years ago. IMO, it's a significant contributing factor to Cathay Pacific's downturn over the last few years.
China Eastern alone serve thirteen mainland cities, as per this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taiwan_Taoyuan_International_Airport
I live in Kunshan; 'Little Taiwan' and there are over 100,000 Taiwanese in my city.
On the odd occasion I read something about Taiwan/mainland relationships in the newspaper, it's invariably about more positive relationships.
On an unrelated subject, I first visited Israel in 2000. The experience was miles away from what BBC and CNN had spun to me prior to my travel.
