Qatar Or Etihad To Scotland

Tue Feb 05, 2013 6:38 pm

First of all, my apologies if this has been discussed previously but my search yielded no results. Anyway, with Emirates now double daily to Glasgow do any of you see potential for Qatar or Etihad in Scotland? I'm not sure if there is a market but I am no expert. Personally, I would love to see Qatar at my local Edinburgh but I doubt it.

Your thoughts?

Thank you

I think it's only a matter of time; these airlines (like EK) have big order books and are expanding quickly; most of the major European cities have now been served directly from the major M/E hubs and I think it can only be a matter of time before they consider other cities and EDI will certainly be considered; I believe the Scottish govt has provided a significant amount of funding to attract major carriers there. It will be a major boost to EDI to get such a route. There is a dwindling number of unserved major cities and I think it will be a case of "why be third into AMS/CDG/ZRH (or wherever), when you can be first into EDI/BER/TLS etc etc. At some stage, all of the major European cities will be served from a major M/E hub. Edinburgh's moment will come, just as Dublin's did.

ETIHAD has already announced connections to Scotland, all be it as a codeshare on KLM.

From ETIHAD Press Release: EY launches AMS service from 15 May 2013.

The codeshare expansion will see Etihad Airways placing its EY code on KLM flights to Stockholm, Aberdeen, Barcelona, Bergen, Birmingham, Copenhagen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Gothenburg, Helsinki, Leeds/Bradford, Madrid, Nice and Toronto. This adds to the current codeshare flights to Billund, Cardiff, Newcastle, Oslo, and Stavanger.

These new codeshares are in addition to existing EY/KL codeshare on AMS- Stavanger, Billund, Oslo, Cardiff, Newcastle.

So this means that from May 2013 ETIHAD will codeshare to/from Scotland on:

- ABZ-AMS-AUH v.v. = 2x daily - KL and EY
- EDI-AMS-AUH v.v. = 2x daily - KL and EY
- GLA-AMS-AUH v.v. = 2x daily - KL and EY

In addition to the many competing services, this may meet market demand for ETIHAD services for the time being.

Again, I am no expert before anyone jumps on me but I don't see the point in a codeshare with KLM and Etihad - why for example, fly EDI to AMS to AUH to BKK on a combination of EY/KL when you could just fly EDI to AMS to BKK on KL? Anyway, hopefully we will see QR or EY at Edinburgh sometime soon

Didn't QR some time ago mention the possibility of more UK destinations, once more 787s were delivered; BHX was certainly mentioned, as was the possibility of returning to LGW. Can't recall if EDI was mentioned.

Of course, that is contingent on the 787 returning to service; I would just love to be a fly on the wall for a conversation between Ali Al Baker and Boeing; I can imagine him wiping the floor with them! He must be a tad cross at this stage!

As welcome as the KL/EY link is, I don't count that as a route to EDI! There will be nonstops someday!

I'm sure it was mentioned sometime last year that QR have EDI and a return to LGW pencilled in once the 787's start arriving in numbers, and the new airport is fully opened in DOH.
