DL Receives Final DOT Approval For SEA-HND

Surprised there isn't a thread on this already.

"ATLANTA, Feb. 5, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL) has received final approval from the U.S. Department of Transportation to operate new nonstop service between Seattle and Tokyo International Airport, also known as Haneda Airport. The new flights will begin on June 1, 2013."

What's next for DL at SEA? To Asia we've got NRT, PEK and KIX, HND beginning June 1st, with PVG beginning June 17, 2013. Will it be ICN? HKG?

Ah thanks. If the mods feel this news should update that thread instead, which questioned when final approval would come, I've no problem reposting there.

RW thank you! I thought this 10hr time difference was getting me lol I swear I read it yesterday as well!
But best if luck to DL on this. I think they will fare much better from SEA. Nice TPAC hub is forming!

As of June, NRT--ICN is getting axed, which means this is another one of the 757 flights out of NRT cancelled (like PUS, KIX and NGO). I guess it makes sense to use the KE partnership to get people from NRT to ICN. So that will leave only DTW-ICN on DL metal as of June. Seems kind of odd not to provide a DL metal option to ICN from the west coast. Especially given the new Medallion Qualifying Dollar thing.

With regards to HND, by autumn, the Japanese Transport Ministry is hoping to assign the new daytime slots that will be available from March 2014, a number of these slots will be made available for Haneda-USA flights. ( http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/dy/national/T130104003723.htm )

It is good to see DL building up SEA as a true gateway to the far east. I would like to see HKG for sure, but MNL might be an interesting shot as well. Lot's of connecting pax from the DL network already, and add that codeshare with AS and you might be able to turn a decent yield.

Can the 332 do SEA-HKG?

Anyone remember when Ron Allen planned to make TPE a Pacific hub? I think it fell thru about the same time that Leadership "7.5" was instituted.

NGO could be a possibility. ICN already has KE and Asiana on the route. So DL would be going head to head with already established carriers on the route.
When I worked at NW in 2006, you couldn't imagine how many pax and LD3's we had full and going to MNL. I am sure it is still the same these days.
From an airline's standpoint, the yields usually will be a lot stronger if you are the only one on the route. So NGO and MNL would be great additions. But I agree HKG is the biggest fish in the pot at the moment.

No way they add ICN. A third carrier is not needed on this route, especially when OZ and KE are operating less than daily schedules. Why couldn't DL simply codeshare on KE given their plans to increase the JV between US-ICN?

I think HKG is probably a matter of time, especially if PVG is a strong performer. NW operated this route in the 1990s with a 747-200, and it was always full (yields were another story, of course). I think it could work with a 763/332, or even a 777 given the changes since then (growth of SEA market, AS connecting service, and cheaper airplane to operate). NGO is also a good possibility. The European carriers are starting new routes to secondary Chinese markets (Xiamen, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, etc.)... it would be nice to see a US carrier try one of these at least a few days a week. That said, DL would probably try these first from NRT rather than from the mainland.

I think LHR has a good possibility in the next 5 years as well. BA has cut back on the SEA route and the DL/AS partnership is starting to gain critical mass where they may become a carrier of choice, even if the service isn't as nice as BA.

Exciting! Will those be new slots, new frequencies? And/or will the current carriers be able to move their current HND-USA flights to those slots for better timings?
