Best Domestic First Class?

Sun Oct 22, 2000 9:43 pm

What is the best domestic First Class that you have flown? I have only flown on United's and thought it was okay. How about anyone else?

It will depend upon the route. For example, if you are referring to an ordinary domestic route such as ORD-PHX or DFW-BOS, etc. then, from my experience, I will say that AA's First Class service is better than any I have flown in the past couple of years (includes AA, DL, UA, US).

Now if you examine specific longer haul routes, for example ORD-SFO or ORD-LAX, both AA and UA fly three-class "international" aircraft on certain flights. UA sells a Business Class product in these markets while AA does not. While AA's seats on such aircraft will be of the international "sleeper" style (as UA's should be), my guess is that UA's service on these select routes may be better than AA's since they are actually selling two "premium" classes on such flights. AA's First Class on these flights probably mirrors UA's Business Class, where offered, on the same routes.

Transcon flights are an altogether different situation, and I have not flown them in 20 years, so I will leave that subject for others' comments. I suspect, however, that if CO operates any transcon flights their "BusinessFirst" product will blow most any other carrier's service away.

Forgot to include in my previous post:

In the Hawaii market, while considered "domestic" (although I have been told that AA's HNL flights are operated under the auspices of its International division), I believe you will find CO's BusinessFirst service to be the winner. CO is the only carrier to my knowledge who is offering such a product (sleeper-style seats, generous seat pitch, superb catering, PTVs) to/from HNL. From what I have read and been told by those having experienced CO's BusinessFirst product to Hawaii, no other airline's "First Class" even comes close in that market.

Greetings,

I have only flown domestic first class with AA on the following routes: ORD-HNL and HNL-DFW both were on DC-10's, PVD-ORD and DFW-BOS, both on MD-80's. The service was wonderful and the food relatively good. As for the seats, nothing what I would have expected for a first class cabin, especially on the the DC-10's. But then again, I have nothing to compare these flights to, other than postings in forums like these. I will be flying again in April, PVD-HNL, with AA. By then their conversion to the 767-300ER should be complete. I really don't know which seat that they will be using, other than that it will not be the new "sleeper seats" that they offer on the international routes. If you folks want, I can keep you posted.

First, there is a big difference in first class service depending on length of flight. On the shorter routes, the service is not that much above coach. The main advantages are the bigger seats, additional storage space for carry-ons and being first on / first off the flight. The longer the flight, the better the service gets. For short routes, the best service probably is on Midwest Express (all first class on their jets).

On transcontinental, I have flown American Airlines, Continental, Delta, United and US Airways and have found that on balance, they are equal. [This does not include premium service on three class aircraft.] They all have their strengths, but in the end, they balance out. In all cases, the service on the transcons is very good and only a notch below international service. Of course, the tickets are expensive ($2,259 round-trip on United PHL - SFO last week).

United, of course!

Where else can you get flat beds on many, many, MANY of an airline's flights?!

OK I seemed to have confused some people.

Domestic first class in terms of the Domestic seat is what I forgot to include. I am sorry.

Best Regards,

Umm....undeniably AN. Great food, plenty of room, great attentive service. Suppose this is why they are time and time again awarded the Best Domestic Airline in the World.
