Wed Feb 06, 2013 7:11 pm

Turkish Airlines orders five additional A330 passenger aircraft:

http://www.airbus.com/newsevents/new...dditional-a330-passenger-aircraft/

TK is really growing!

I have corrected the title to be more clear...

Total WB orders stand at 20 77W and 20 333. That is more than a doubling from 7 343, 17 330, and 12 77W currently.

TK order five additional A330-300s

Wed Feb 06, 2013 7:19 pm

Absolutely; this is in addition to 15 recently ordered A333s and 20 777Ws - 40 widebodies in all, to add to those currently in operation.

I think this is actually two firm orders, plus 3 options, but it's more than likely that these will be exercised.

The total number of A330s in the fleet or on order is:

10 A330-300s
8 A330-200s

17 A333s are currently on firm order, with three on options.

TK order five additional A330-300s

Wed Feb 06, 2013 8:17 pm

I am still not too clear;

TK ordered 15 + 5 options 333s few months back,
is this an addition to that, or just exercising the options

-15 firm + 2 firm + 3 options ?

or

-(15 firm + 5 options) + (2 firm + 3 options)?

Thanks.

The rest of the A330-300s have Trent engines; the -200s have CF6 engine, however. I assume they'll stick with the Trents for the new orders.

We won't have to wait long for the next TK order; they should be placing their order for up to 100 widebodies later this month or next.

Alas, the last order (15?) of A333s were ordered with GE, so I assume these will go the same way.
Yes I know the (in service) -300s are RR whereas the -200s are GE.

You mean narrowbodies, correct?

Anyway, it's great to see how TK is growing. My very first flight was on a THY DC 10 in 1979 and nowadays I am using TK for my trips to China. I was in IST last week and when you look out of the window and you see all these red TK-tails... impressive!

The 7 A343s are to be replaced by A333s and 77Ws from these orders, so it is less than a doubling.

In fact the current fleet plans show at least a number of them staying beyond 2016. Only 2 332s will be returned. The whole info is public at http://www.turkishairlines.com/downl...entations/sunum_aralik_tr_2012.pdf

Can TK handle this much growth without the new airport? I struggle to see how.

Hey, we have been saying the same thing for the last decade, but somehow it keeps going.
It is going to be interesting to see this next 5 years, where first phase of the new Istanbul airport is completed.
TK alone is planning to grow 6-7% next 5 years.
TK planning to base some planes at SAW, more space created by moving the TAF from IST and maybe moving some junk airplanes will create more space, but that is it.
I was looking at TK schedules last night. Only a few years back there were no flights between midnight and 5am at IST. Looking at the schedule last night oh my....many many flights after midnight.
It will be an interesting 5 years ahead.

What curfews??

IIRC, our flight from ATL-LGA was delayed so long that we couldn't land at LGA because of curfew (that was the first time I realized that there were curfews at LGA), ended up landing at JFK. The airline shuttled everyone who wanted to, to LGA.

The "I-Hate-Frankfurt-Airport" brigade ensured that FRA have a curfew 2300 to 0500 local times.

From ch-aviation;
Turkish Airlines (TK, Istanbul Atatürk/Yesilköy International (IST)) has finalized its order for additional A330-300s originally announced at the end of last month. It has placed firm orders with Airbus Industrie (AIB, Toulouse Blagnac (TLS)) for two additional aircraft and has secured options for three later delivery positions. THY currently already operates ten A330-300s and has fifteen more on order.

So it sounds like 15+2+3 options.

Amazing news! So where will these birds fly once they are delivered? What routes are the most likely candidates?

Does this mean that Turkish Airlines will have even more widebodies on their intra-European flights?

So we have now 20 B777-300ER and 17 fix A330-300 and 3 options on WB order?

What about not yet delivered orders of NB: how many of them are open?

Thank you... BTW, on page 12 of http://www.turkishairlines.com/downl...entations/sunum_aralik_tr_2012.pdf
one can see the fleet plan of TK (minus the 2 additional 333 ordered and any new NB order).

It seems that they are planning to phase out B734, B737 and cut A319 and A320 fleets from 41 to 25. A321 on the other hand goes up from 32 to 41 and B738/B739ER up from 68 to 85. There is an upgauging of the NB fleet in general. What are they planning to fly to routes with less demand? Or what will they use to open new routes?

Saturation happens and TK eventually will go down to single digits in terms of growth.
-By returning 319, 737, 320 TK might have to come up with something else for AnadoluJet.
-By not ordering more 332s, TK seems to be not interested in a 250 pax aircraft.
Like I said in another thread, there will be a gap between 321 and 787-9/350-9, 185 pax-280+pax. which will make TK less flexible I think.

I have a feeling "if it is not broke, dont fix it" will work again for TK;
319NEO with 2-class 124 seats
321NEO with 2-class 185 seats (with these two types, TK will cover 90% of its destinations)
350-900 with 3-class 314 seats
350-1000 with 3-class 350 seats; could be the future for TK;

Complemented by
-737MAX for the 150+ seat market
-787 for the 250+ seat market

and always a possibility of 77X and 380 additions.

There could be the idea of building a domestic plane and use it for thin routes; 100+seater turbo or RJ with the help of another nation. That might be in the longer term.

So will the B737-800 slowly become the backbone of their European operations while the A321 will be dispatched to routes where there is more capacity; whereas the B737-900 will fly around Africa and on longer, thinner routes?

I'm curious - why announce this order now if there is a big order expected later in February/March?

This might just be a 'routine' top up order, while the upcoming announcement will cover something more substantial, like a new type, or a substantial order.
Or there won't be a big announcement after all.
I'll do my own airline. With Blackjack. And hookers. In fact, forget the airline.
