Super Bowl 2014 And NYC Airspace Thoughts

Thu Feb 07, 2013 4:14 pm

With Super Bowl 2014 being held at Met Life Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ, it got me thinking of all the aircraft that will be using the airspace in and around NYC/Northern NJ area. The Super Bowl is notorious for having 4-5 days of increased air traffic and then the huge departure rush starting early in the last quarter of the game.

When the game was held in Houston in 2004, the airspace was flooded with traffic some of which would arrive drop off their passengers and then depart only to return in a few hours with more passengers. The fractional companies were all over the place and if you didn't have a reservation from the ATCSCC you found it even more difficult. Reservations were required to park on the ramps at probably 6-8 different airports in the Houston area, without that reservation you had to drop the passengers off and go somewhere else. It was a great time for sure.

My random thoughts started with what airports within 40 NM of the stadium would be used for these aircraft? Sure places like TEB and HPN, but they are already packed most days. How will this influx of traffic impact EWR/JFK/LGA as they make their way inbound to and outbound from the area? How many more flights a day can EWR/JFK/LGA handle as the airlines will certainly add flights/increase seat capacity?

Please provide your thoughts and comments on this topic even though it is still months away, the planning will surely begin very soon to get all these things and more on the table.

I know FRG will be flooded probably with overflow. Good for us right in the approach.  ISP should also probably take a few.

LGA I definitely see taking a decent amount of Bizjets, as they have a decent ramp for them. I wonder if we'll see 767s at LGA again for the Superbowl?

Maybe they are lucky enough and Giants and Jets play the superbowl....

Otherwise it will be a crazy days in the airspace around New York, JFK, LGA and EWR can´t handle many more extra flights, but so other aiports can do an extra effort and accept some extra traffic for a few days... and for parking they can do like in Houston, drop off and go....

Most private aircraft will fly into Teterboro and Morristown airports. EWR will see some, JFK will probably not see much of any increased activity. One thing to keep in mind that many people who fly to the Super Bowl each year are already in the area, for instance the NFL is based in Manhattan and NFL films in South Jersey. Plus the Networks are all in Manhattan, ESPN in Connecticut etc...

And if one or both of the home teams, Jets and GIants, make the Super Bowl they will be commuting from home.

I just remembered this one C650 that had a slot time to land at HOU but didn't make a parking reservation. The Ops folks at HOU wouldn't even let him park on the airport and with the weather being like overcast at 200, RVR's in the 2400' range all over town they had to fly to BPT some 70 miles away to park the jet.

The ATC slot system they will probably implement will be very interesting as far as delays are concerned.

There are plenty of corporations not based in the NYC area which appear for the parties and such, many of which don't attend the game.

The game in Houston was New England and Carolina, yet there were aircraft inbound from all over the west coast as well as middle America.

They will not need to a significant increase in airline capacity during the 2014 Super Bowl because of the enormous amount of capacity already in-place into NYC.

When the Super Bowl was held in Detroit in 2006, there was not much additional capacity added. Yes, they added additional flights and upgauged into the markets from the teams, plus added charters.

2006 was Pittsburgh vs. Seattle, with people from PIT just drove to Detroit. SEA saw increases.

NYC & LAX always sees extra flights or capacity increases to the Super Bowl site.

Next year will be different since all the NYC people will be local, there is already a ton of capacity from LAX to NYC, and WAS is a train ride away. Plus, it is very possible that a team from the Northeast could be in the Super Bowl, and their fan base would drive and/or take the train (Patriots, Ravens, Eagles, Redskins, Steelers, Bills)

The issue is going to be GA aircraft, but they will have plans in place.
