Will BA Resume BKK-SYD?

Sat Feb 09, 2013 6:38 am

With QF and BA's joint-revenue programme coming to an end, will BA resume BKK-SYD?

What about the third daily HKG-LHR flight or flights to AKL/MEL etc?

Why would they?

I think they have enough capacity to SYD via their current daily flight.

It is a B 777-200ER right? I suppose that flight will stay. With QF leaving the SIN-LHR market wonder if BA will add flights.

Will they resume service to MEL and AKL one day? Perhaps KUL and MNL?

Currently on the 744, but will change to the 777-300ER soon.

With all these changes wonder if it will stay as a B 747-400?

I don't understand why all talk about the QF/BA JSA... Yes, it's coming to an end but we are in a new era and the agreement was past its use by date... The way I see it BA will continue to serve down under with an upgauge in the pipeline to a B77W & BA will continue code sharing on QF domestic services...

I guess BAs codeshares to New Zealand with CX serve their needs for that market - I doubt it will be much impacted by the end of the BA/QF JSA.

Also with the recent arrival of MH into Oneworld and their two A380s a day from LHR-KUL I would rather expect to see BA codeshare on those services than send their own metal that way. I would also expect to see some KUL-AUS [MEL/BNE/PER] codeshares between BA and MH.

Having taken MH to MEL via KUL from LHR a couple of years ago in Y I'd be quite happy for BA to let them continue to fly those markets.

Also with QR coming into the fold I wonder whether if it is more likely that if there were to be a second BA flight to AUS it might not go via Doha rather than BKK and collect a bunch of people from QRs European and N African routes en route. As I understand it QR don't have rights to Sydney so this might be good for them too. BAs passengers could also connect at Doha for QRs existing AUS destinations.

The BA 744s in current use are "Mid J" aircraft configured for up to 337 (F14 / J52 / W36 / Y235) passengers.

From 31 March more fuel economical, more premium-seat rich 77Ws configured for up to 299 passengers (F14 / J56 / W44 / Y185) and able to carry a greater volume of cargo will be used.

But how much of QF's SIN-LHR traffic is O&D, as opposed to just Australians breaking the long trip home? Presumably those mid-trip stopovers will be taken in DXB now.

Where can we get statistics on how much O&D traffic QF carry on this route?
I only turn left when boarding aircraft. Well, mostly. All right, sometimes. OH OKAY - rarely.

What is interesting is the passenger cap that the Australian authorities has placed on Malaysia Airlines as a result of AirAsiaX being allowed to operate on the KL-Australian routes. This has rendered the A380 useless for Malaysia Airlines flights into Australia as i gather there is an allocated number of seats each day that MH is allowed between KL and Melbourne and KL and Sydney. Hence MH has opted to operate twice daily A330s to offer better connections for transfer passengers rather than send a single daily A380 instead.

Whilst anecdotal, previous trips i've taken with MH have been chocker block full between KL and Melbourne with pretty healthy demand from local traffic as well as transit passengers ex-Europe and Ex-India/Sri Lanka. I gather that Malaysia Airlines is continuing to request an additonal daily service at least into Melbourne but perhaps this is where British Airways may be quite useful.

Should BA consider an LHR-KUL-MEL service there shouldnt be much trouble filling it on each sector should an MH codehare occur. I guess its a question of aircraft availability on BAs part and if MH would share the costs of running a 777 or 747 all the way down to Melbourne from London...

Hope someone at BA and MH are reading this. :0)
