Old Documentary On BA Taking Delivery Of A 747-400

Sat Feb 09, 2013 1:33 pm

I found this while roaming around YouTube, a very old BBC2 documentary on BA. You want to know how old this? This is when BA and AA were at each others necks, Air Europe was BA's biggest competitor, Concorde still flew and Boeing was weighed down by safety issues on a new jet.

Well, at least some things don't change   Sorry about that, am a huge 747 but...

Good video. Fun to go back and hear 1980's rhetoric about the airline industry.

I laughed when the narrator referred to young Richard Branson and Virgin as a "...cheeky British small-fry".

The media nearly always get it wrong. Near the end of Part 4 of these videos the commentator says

"Although British Airways say they welcome the freedom 1992 [European deregulation] will bring they know it will favour Harry Goodman's airline [Air Europe] that has been astutely tailored for the new Europe."

Here they were simply repeating what Harry Goodman had told them although this is not evident from the video.

The four videos revolve around the acceptance flight and delivery of BA's 744, G-BNLC . That delivery was made on 21 July 1989. By then Harry Goodman's International Leisure Group (ILG) that owned Air Europe was already in financial trouble. Air Europe filed for bankruptcy and ceased all operations on 8 March 1991:

Was this narrated by the same person who narrated the Hitchiker's Guide?

What a difference a couple of decades make. Makes me wonder what the airline industry is going to be like in ten to twenty years from now, and how many things will have changed.

Depends if you mean the original radio show, tv programme or film........ It certainly was NOT the original "Voice of the Book", veteran, and much missed, comedy actor, Peter Jones.

Wow, I remember watching this as an excited teenager! I even hummed along to he theme tune, so I must've watched it over and over! If my memory serves me correctly this was a series of three or four shows, although this may just be down to me watching the same one hundreds of times   I should still have them on VHS somewhere, I'll have to dig them out. Although they're probably not in as good condition as this one. Thanks for sharing!

It was a series of four shows - someone must have uploaded to youtube recently as I spent an enjoyable weekend a few weeks ago watching them. Very interesting - going from profiling the chairman to the flight deck and a fair spread of everything in between.

Mild bit of continuity error geekery in episode one, where they show one B742 taking off for Bangkok, and a different one landing there.

Would love to show this back to the CEO's who were in it and see what they would say now. I know Colin is no longer with us.

It takes so much longer to watch now that I have the ability to Wikipedia every person interviewed and google every airliner's registration number!   Very interesting though, hours of time wasting... I mean 'researching'.

Haven't seen this for years - was working for BA then and I think I converted the videos to digital! Great stuff
