Why No CX F Class To Australia?

Fri Feb 15, 2013 9:35 pm

Just wondering if anyone has any ideas why there is no First Class offered on any of Cathay's flights to Australia. Obviously, I can see why there is no need to, for example ADL and CNS, but I'm surprised there's no market for one daily flight to MEL and SYD on a 77W with First Class. I realise they're going for frequency in the market, but still a bit surprised that they don't want to offer First Class fares between Australia and Europe.

No demand for First Class on Cathay from HKG to Sydney ? Hey QF flies their A380 to HKG so there has to be some First demand.

There is very little true F demand out there in general, but there are plenty of F seats by comparison chasing that tiny demand, so if CX doesn't send any F seats to Australia, it's probably because there is no demand. In spite of SQ's 380s to SYD, they still send plenty of 333s to Australia, and SYD was the first destination for Scoot. I suspect AustraliaAsia is so hyper-competitive and leisure heavy at this point that there is no reason for F.

8-9 hours to Hong Kong - Business will give you a bed of some concoction - First class I can understand paying the extra on a AU-EU flight or AU-US flight, but Asia, J makes do.

I thought some of CX's A333s had first-class. That's one of the reasons we hardly saw those sub-types in Japan.
Or did they get rid of that sub-fleet?

All converted to 3 class several years ago now.

Re the 77Ws, CX has routes that need the range of the 77W.

Is it the ones with 260 seats or so??? We saw one of the birds at Centrair the other day but would it have even less seats than that if it were configured with F?

There are some rumblings about maybe some type changes on a couple of the Australian routes within CX. Nothing announced as yet but they are going to be reviewing their strategies.

It was mentioned a while back about the possibility of 77Ws to Australia on some flights maybe 1 each to SYD and MEL. Maybe even 744s in the short term since HKG-SYD/MEL is shorter than LAX/SFO burning less fuel. They could use the 77Ws elsewhere, not to say that 77Ws would be what they are even planning.

AKL had First seasonally for a few years when they ran the 744s here in the NZ summer, they only ran the 744s for additional Y seating not so they could sell F though.

Thanks. So much for keeping up to date.
I assume 3-class is biz, premium economy, and economy.

Some, yes, but I'd imagine that if there was sufficient demand, CX will be sending F equipped aircraft there. The only CX aircraft with F are the 777-300ERs with 6 F seats, or the 747-400 with 9. If they can't fill 6 F seats regularly on flights to HKG they'd probably be better off flying the route without F.

I suppose even if there were some type changes it wouldn't affect PER. It would be nice to see them send something other than A333s here

Although all I ever see of first class is the ten second glance as I keep walking to the back of the plane, a significant chunk of the Aus-HK traffic on CX is part of an Aus-EU(or even US) itinerary for quite a lot of passengers....

I tend to think there may be some truth to these rumblings seeing CX's strategy into LHR using a the mix of 4 class and 3 class equipment now. If true, it would be a welcome change to have F back on CX into AUS ... although it will likely be a too little late for my AONE6 this July (not that I'm complaining about QF's A380 on the route for a few days/week).
