Russian 4 Holer Parked At MSP?

Fri Feb 15, 2013 9:43 pm

Was driving on 494 and noticed a chunky 4 hole Russian Cargo plane on the ramp, engine covers on. Anyone have info on it? Couldn't get a reg.
So we beat on against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.

Russian 4 Holer Parked At MSP?

Fri Feb 15, 2013 10:02 pm

Saw it yesterday. An Antonov 124 I believe. Every once in awhile an Antonov visits MSP most likely for transport or a fuel stop.
It ain't no normal MD80 its a Super 80!

Glad I wasn't going crazy when I saw this. I nearly stopped on 494 to look. Was there Thursday night when I saw it near Hanger C.

EDIT:

Looking at this photo: http://www.airliners.net/photo/Polet...tonov-An-124-100-Ruslan/0631785/L/

What do each of the four flight engineers do?

In the photo, I do like the curtain behind the pilots seats, they can pull them closed so its like F/Y

I thought was so that the pilots can sleep without light filtering in from the flight engineer stations.

I saw it too on Friday upon landing on Runway 35. I later excitedly told my in-laws in the car on 494 what that plane was. They didn't share my excitement.

Any word on what she's doing in MSP for such an extended period? The weather is reminiscent of her home, but still....

Really? I didn't know Delta TechOps supported aircraft built in the former Eastern Bloc.

Didn't there used to be one of these based at IAH for awhile? Or was that a 224?

Do they really need 6 people on the flight deck or is it because you need 6 players for a round of Russian BlackJack ?

You will see them in RIC on occasion. I nearly drove off I-64 one day when I saw it turning onto final. A friend of mine that works for one of the big cigarette manufacturers says they fly it in, pack it to the ceiling with cartons of cigarettes and fly it home. It bulks out way before it hits max gross weight.

Wonder what the resale value on all those cigarettes would be? Might jumpstart my 401.

Volga-dnepr's main North American office is in Houston (and another office satelite in THe Woodlands suburb).
An-124s are regular visitors at IAH and the 6 holer is no stranger relatively speaking.

From their website:
VOLGA-DNEPR – UNIQUE AIR CARGO INC. (US BRANCH)

The US branch was established in 2000 to promote Volga-Dnepr services in the North and South American markets. It deals with Volga-Dnepr marketing and sales in the region. The branch is situated in Houston, Texas. At present Volga-Dnepr - Unique Air Cargo Inc. generates about 30% of Volga-Dnepr’s total global operations.

FWIW, there was a good show about this aircraft - Might Planes on the Smithsonian Channel.

A description and a short clip is at:

It may have been chartered to transport heavy equipment or something like that. I have seen the program Mighty Planes and they did a story on the AN-124 and it was very informative about the operations of the AN-124. I like the program.

What is that big six engine monster, the A-225? Is that still being built?

One An-225 was completed and is still operated by Antonov Airlines, another was partially built but not completed.

There are various claims that it will be completed some day, but it seems less and less likely with each passing day.

When this came in several days ago I was standing at the parking lot at Citibank in FSD talking with a coworker at 5:00 and I see this really crazy wing-over 4-engine aircraft. Way too big to be an Avro (and those are long gone from this part of the world). Wasn't in military colors. It was none other than POT4736 on its way to MSP (per FlightAware iPhone app)... and *everyone* uses FSD as a waypoint to somewhere. So I called all my MSP airplane people and told them that it would be about 45-55 mins out and I think someone even went and took some photos.
