DL Upgrading LAX-SEA To Mainline, Resuming MEM-SEA

Sun Feb 17, 2013 10:11 pm

Can't find a news article, but I read it on some forums and checked it on the Delta flight schedules.

For the summer season, the new upcoming 3x daily LAX-SEA service on Skywest CRJ-900s is being upgraded to 1x 737-800, 1x 757-200, and 1x CRJ-900. They're also resuming MEM-SEA as a summer seasonal service with 1x A320.

MEM-SEA was dropped last year.

What about CVG service to SEA? Last I heard it went seasonal too...what's the status on that one?

If SEA continues to expand as DL's asian gateway, i don't see why DL wouldn't expand more service between MEM and CVG

Still operating. Keep in mind though that it doesn't operate only in the months of January and February, so it's not seasonal in the sense that it's summer only.

Operates 10 months out of the year.

Sounds like there might actually be some teeth to the AS/DL dispute rumor. That's a lot of additional capacity into SEA, particularly from LAX...

Shame there's still some holes in the LAX-SEA schedule in July. No 9am departure like year's past. Hopefully AS (hint hint) fills out some of the holes.

I suspect I'll venture onto the DL 757 a few times this year. I miss flying those routinely.

Not really, DL has something like 9 widebodies a day from SEA .... it needs the feed to fill those planes. DL doesn't care if the feed comes from AS or DL.

Sorry, catch me up to speed, what dispute? The only AS/DL rumor I regularly hear about is them merging.

This sounds like one of the old NW 757 routes from SEA-MEM-MCO. I flew it back in 2004 from SEA embarking at SEA "S" terminal.

Sounds like the bookings for SEA-LAX and return are better than anticipated for the summer. The AS SEA-LAX flights (and vice-versa) are always FULL. Some of the DL pax are probably having a hard time getting decent fares between the city-pairs.

It absolutely does--it can control the feed on DL, but not on AS. AS may be turning away DL flow preferring to take locals or online connections instead. I bet a local LAXSEA is almost always worth more to AS than the prorate they get for LAXSEAKIX/PEK/PVG/NRT.

I'll 2nd that...I think AS can't provide enough capacity on their LAX-SEA or SEA-LAX flights to accommodate DL passengers. So, DL has to come in and help with the overflow. Although, I'm sure many do connect through SEA to other international destinations...not just DL.

It has been mentioned in this thread that AS carries a good amount of connection passengers to Emirates' SEA-Dubai flights.

My GOD....i seldom comment on these boards rather lurking and reading the interesting comments posed by the members on here, but you seem to have this unhealthy fascination with all things DL. I say unhealthy because you are constantly going out of your way to essentially trash Delta at every turn. Might i ask your disdain towards the Big D? You can have your own opinions but you can't have your own facts. Fact is, Delta is presently one of the best-managed, labor-friendly, profitable airlines in the skies with solid operational numbers to back it up and all i ever seem to see you do is degrade the airline, no matter how much of a reach it might be on your part.

Oh here we go . How do you get 'trashing DL' from a mundane observation that DL doesn't control AS, yet AS is an important component of its international flying out of SEA?

I was wondering the same. I had to re-read your post 5 times to see if there was a hidden meaning in the observation that AS would rather handle O&D traffic than pro-rate connections

What the heck are you talking about? Nothing he said was even remotely trashing them, and in fact mirrored virtually everyone's consensus that DL needed to add the metal to support their growing presence in SEA.

Seriously.....

Makes you wonder why WN has yet to initiate n/s flights from the LA area to SEA?

I've always wondered that, but one thing I'll say is that their plethora of one-stop, same-plane options in numerous city-pairs makes a huge difference. For someone like me who enjoys the same-plane, stop-and-go as an interesting diversion, I have no problem choosing WN. We've passed through RNO, SMF, OAK, SJC, and LAS as connections en route to the Los Angeles area over the years. Worked for me.

Good point...Alaska by all accounts has a tremendous amount of spill on LAX-SEA and I see Delta's upguage as nothing more than trying to capture that spill. Ever try booking LAX-SEA on AS a day out on a Thursday or Friday? Good luck....almost always zeroed out.

Lest we forget that the AA code share also contributes to those full LAX-SEA flights. DL is smart to add their own metal. It's doubtful there will be much cannibalizing from AS.

I think WN could make a go of it if they really wanted to. LAX-SEA and PDX could likely be supported. There is definitely no lack of one-stops though and DL is another competitor now. IIRC WN will be getting a few gates with some gate shuffling but I wouldn't be surprised if the flights are allocated to other markets rather than WN battling it out on LAX-SEA/PDX. I also think it's very likely WN will fly DAL-LAX as soon as the Wright Amendment allows.

IIRC there is usually a more capacity on DL out of MSP and DTW and I'm guessing ATL as well. WN also runs a few seasonal only cities to SEA non-stop.

Very nice schedule. DL is showing they are somewhat serious about serving the large O&D markets from LAX. LAX-LAS seems to be getting more capacity every so often.
