Future For Bournemouth Airport

I was on Bournemouth Airports website and noticed for today just one departure to TFS and one arrival (flight back). This airport was once busy when Ryanair had a small base and a nice mix of flights was on offer. Now with a new terminal and only 1 flight a day it seems very little for any airport. Is anyone aware of any future developments in regards to routes/carriers - I know Aer Lingus Regional now offer a daily service to Dublin which I hope stays.

The Ryanair base is summer only, with one aircraft from normally mid March to late October.

It's mid-winter mid-week, so yes, not much happening down in BOH. Weekend sees a few more flights and in summer it's a bit busier anytime. The decision by Bath Travel to disbandon the Palmair airline and FR's winter pull-out has hurt BOH no doubt. I hope EZY will look at BOH in future, maybe try and take on BE out of nearby SOU on a couple of domestic routes like EDI and BFS.

I think in the years to come, there needs to be some consolidation in these small regional airports...

They almost put all their eggs in one basket and are totally reliant upon a single airline to feed them traffic, this is exactly what happened to Plymouth and Coventry...

Airports I reckon, which are potentially under threat are:

Blackpool
Bournmouth
Derry
Durham Tees-Valley
Exeter (If FlyBE were to pullout)
Humberside
Manston
Newquay
Norwich
Southend

Especially if their only major customer pulled out.

Many of these airports prove they cannot run profitably, by having to charge the passengers an additional fee to fly through them, on top of what the airlines are already paying them... Examples I can think of are - Norwich, Newquay, Durham and Blackpool.

BOH has many aviation-related industries on the airfield, like FR Aviation, the Cessna Citation overhaul centre and the Honeywell 737 overhaul base, flying schools to name but a few. Out of your list, I can only think Durham-Tees would be a possible closure candidate. PLH and CVT had virtually nothing to keep them going apart from the few flights they had.

Blue Islands did do (and might still do?) a Jersey service on most days of the week, with a Jetstream 41. But I can't find out if it's still operating, or stopped for the winter, or just stopped altogether.

Titan Airways have a Royal Mail contract to one of the Channel Islands (I think it might be JER) with a 737-300 freighter, which is based at the airport. Again I'm not too sure about this, but I think it only flies early mornings and sits on the deck the rest of the day.

West Air Cargo have an ATP and a Lockheed Electra based at BOH for cargo flights.

Easyjet do a winter only GVA service n Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The service is twice on Saturdays.

Cobham, have their main base at BOH and have MOD contract flights with the Royal Navy. Towing airborne targets for RN ships to shoot at.

There are a few flying schools at BOH including Bournemouth Commercial Flight Training and CTC Wings.

There is a General Aviation maintenance hanger that does good business there as well as a company called AirBourne colours which as it's name suggests has painting contracts for some airlines.

The big problem for BOH is extremely poor access, the roads to get there are bad and traffic management down in Bournemouth isn't exactly good with frequent tailbacks throughout all times of the day. No rail station nearby, no motorways and infrequent and bad bus services into Bournemouth town. This leaves the visitor the only real option of driving and getting ripped off by parking, or getting a taxi and paying some of the highest and ridiculous fares I've seen in this country (rip off is an understatment)
All this combines doesn't make BOH and attractive option for passengers.
With SOU only 30 minutes down the M27 and it has it's own rail station. Flybe have an extensive range of routes out of SOU making it much more successful than BOH.

Blue Islands stopped serving BOH on February 2 of this year.

The £2.50 drop off fee applies as soon as you turn off the main road, as, apparently, it is airport property which leads cars to stop and unload people and baggage in some very unsafe places to avoid the fee!

Thomsonfly used to op BOH FAO until FR came along, then later they binned the route for winter, so BOH ended up a loser on that one. No idea about other routes.

BOH seems to have taken a "Field of Dreams" appraoch to the new terminal - build it and they will come.

SOU is 10 mins from my final destination but BE's fares can be really high hence my use of BOH.

I see, thank you. Very odd time to stop a route, if it was performing badly why not axe it at the beginning of the winter schedule?

Agreed, more money grabbing and has put people off going. An airport as quiet as BOH really shoudn't be charging this, there is no justification for it.

You're making major generalisations here. Do some research into the specifics of each airport first. For HUY for example you might want to see who it's owners are, and have a look at arrival/departure board on the airport website and see the likes of Ensco 70 and Ravenspurn North ST2 amongst Aberdeen and Amsterdam

And talking off helicopters, that is a big part of NWI too

The way forward for regional airports is increasing diversification, and while public passenger flights are very important, so are other revenue streams such as helicopters, engineering, cargo, business and general aviation. The unsexy stuff that isn't very high profile but helps keep an airport busy and thriving

The thing with BOH is if it had better access, not up country lanes and a rail station nearby or better bus access (as BRS doesnt have a rail station but does well with its bus service) it has a long enough runway, it is the right airfield in the wrong location, SOU is the other way round, wrong airfield in the right location. If SOU had the runway and space BOH does it can easily be as busy as say BRS, same could be said for BOH if it had easy access.

Blackpool's always had a niche market for IOM and BFS/BHD flights. Whether or not those solely pay the bills is another matter, but for previous decades, they must have.

I don't disagree that the UK has too many regional airports (at the moment), but given a buoyant economy, they would pick up.

Southend has survived for years as an airport without any passenger service to note, apart from a Summer Saturday charter on BE to JER.

There are a large number of flying schools at SEN as well as maintenance (ATC Lasham?) and painting facilities.
