(2) BAC 1-11's Scrapped, Video & Pics At MCO

Fri Feb 22, 2013 4:51 am

The 2 (VIP) BAC 1-11's that were flew to Orlando a few years ago were scrapped on the ramp in October. A video and pics are posted at

http://www.l10.homestead.com/BAC-1-11-demo.html

Sad to see them go but understand with the huge operating cost.

Sad news, which I had the chance to go back out to that ramp and see them again before they got torn down. I shot the tail of one of them a few years ago.

Ok, dumb question of the day time.

In the linked page, it says that the RR Spey engines are 'the same' as those used on the Gulf II and III. When it says same, does that mean the same design but bigger and more powerful? Or, are they actually identical?? The 1-11 is much bigger, hence my foolish question.

There were quite a few different versions of the Spey for a number of different Aircraft. 1-11, HS 121, G1159, F28, Nimrod to name a few.

Unless you were sitting in the very back of the cabin it was very quiet inside, after all it is a rear engined jet.
The most noise was from the reverse thrust but this only lasts for a few seconds. I have fond memories of the 1-11.

Good old N1541. I flew on that BAC many time when it was with Braniff. Later they painted it in that Ochre color. I thought that color looked best on the 111's in Braniff's fleet. But they only had one of them in that color.

I liked the BAC-111, nice aircraft to fly on and had super cold a/c in it. You could have one sitting on the ramp at SHV on a 100F day with the front door open and by the time you get 3 feet in the aircraft the air was about 65F. But noisy on takeoff.
You could hear those engines crackle!

When did N1541 get scrapped and where at? I believe it also flew with USAir for awhile too.

Saw N999BW at LAX two years ago and just wondered if there were anymore still flying about? Also saw one at Bournemouth two years ago all stripped of paint not sure if it was for scrap or going to be re-sprayed?

Braniff's BAC 111s were unusual in that they were not equipped with the rear (ventral) airstairs.
Looking at the cabin layout, I see that did not change, right to the end.

I have flown on many BAC 111s of many airlines and one thing that struck me was not the cabin noise, as it was similar to a DC-9, but the very strange sound of the Speys when starting up. It was the same in the Trident.
Just because I stopped arguing, doesn't mean I think you are right. It just means I gave up!

These aircraft were part of Jack Safro's fleet at KUES for a number of years. I live on the approach path to this airport and saw them on my drives around Waukesha frequently. Sad to see them scrapped, they were beautiful.

I had the pleasure of seeing and photographing this BAC-111 in Fairbanks Alaska in Sept of 2012. It was flying out of FAI on *test*? flights for Northrup Grumman, for what I dont know but their flightaware info was for 3-5 hour flights north into the Arctic and returning to FAI. Airliners rejected my photos because they were taken with my phone and therefor not of high enough quality but I dont see any more recent ones in the database. I'll share one here for everyone!

I haven't looked lately, but is the BAC-1-11 in USAir colors still on the southwest ramp at MCO?

There was a USAir BAC 1-11 being used for fire training in July 2009. I assume it was these other two birds that were not too far away.

Is there any link between N1541 and N800DM? They have almost the same colours.

Up until a few years ago a BAC 111 would come into Hobby and park at Enterprise Aviation. It would stay two or three days and then leave. I never figured out who owned it.

I know from BAC sales brochures that the 111 was equipped for landing on grass strips. Did anyone ever do this?

The US Air BAC 1-11 pictured above is still used as fire trainer at MCO. The landing gear and support structure was recently reinforced since the elements took a toll on the structure however it is still active as a fire trainer. The demoed BAC 1-11's at the beginning of this thread are two different frames which are now history.

I read somewhere that N541 was the first production BAC 111 off the line. This means that N1541 "survived" the longest, 50 years of service. What an amazing feat.

I also read that Leona Helmsley, the Queen of Mean had a 111 as a private jet. Does anyone know what happened to that one?

According to TAHS jet airliner production list, N1541 was the 13th 1-11 built, after two prototypes. It was the first delivered to Braniff on 06/30/64.

According to this site, it was C/N 0015. However, there was no C/N 0001 TO 0003. C/N0004 and 0006 were prototypes.

Hope this helps.

As noted in other threads, there are a couple other complete BAC's remaining in the US other than the NG ships (both former AAstro Jet's). The one in the most danger is the ship in Kansas (former VASP), as the owner wants to either "Sell or Scrap"...

I nabbed a photo of 200EE the day before it was scrapped and a few shots of the blue and white one during the process. Really a shame what wreckless people with money can do. If you google Pete Benevides I believe he may have been the owner or had some part in it, he ran skyview aviation which was based at the white hangar they were parked in front of.
